Hammer Bros. (also known as Hammer Brothers[1][2] and sometimes formatted with a full stop in older material) are Koopas that stand upright and throw hammers at the player, first appearing in Super Mario Bros. They have bigger shells than Koopa Troopas and wear helmets, usually of the shell's color. Hammer Bros have several times been described as elite members of Bowser's Koopa Troop. They were originally designed by Kazuaki Morita.[3]
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario Bros.
Hammer Brothers were one of the many recurring Super Mario enemies introduced in Super Mario Bros. More often than not, they are encountered in pairs, hindering the player's progress by tossing claw hammers and jumping up and down one or two rows of Brick Blocks and the ground. While the player can avoid them by running past them while they are jumping, defeating them by any means of attack (jumps, hitting the block they are standing on from below, kicked shells, fireballs, or touching them while rendered invincible by a Starman) would grant the player 1000 points. If a Hammer Brother is onscreen for a certain amount of time without being defeated, it starts to chase after the player.
A total of 20 Hammer Brothers appear in the game: a pair in World 3-1, two pairs in World 5-2, two pairs in World 7-1, one in World 7-4 that is disguised as Bowser, eight in World 8-3, and one in World 8-4 before the true Bowser.
In the All-Stars version of the game, their hammers make a whistling sound whenever they are thrown, are slightly slower, and fly on a larger curve compared to the original, making them easier for the plumbers to pass through. In all versions of Super Mario Bros., regardless of what direction the Hammer Brothers face and attack, their hammers would always have the claw side face left, and the hammers would always rotate counterclockwise.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Hammer Brothers return in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Here, they are more common than they are in Super Mario Bros. While they remain unchanged for the first six worlds of the game, starting at World 7 (in Super Mario All-Stars; Worlds 7 and 8 only in the original), the Hammer Brothers always pursue Mario and Luigi, instead of staying at one location. A few even appear in certain underwater levels. They first pursue the Mario Bros. in World 7-1, and their first underwater appearance is in World 9-1. Much like all green enemies that appear in underwater levels, including the "green" Cheep-cheeps, Hammer Brothers underwater are colored gray, but are colored green in the Super Mario All-Stars version.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Hammer Brothers, redesigned with more prominently-yellow skin, black helmets, and black Buzzy Beetle-like shells, act the same in Super Mario Bros. 3, though they hurl mallets as opposed to the claw hammers they wielded in previous appearances (a mere aesthetic difference), they no longer chase after the player after some time, and only defeating them with a stomp would yield 1000 points, as defeating them with any other attack (hitting the block below them, thrown shells, fireballs, tail swipes from Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, hammers from Hammer Mario, and contact with players made invincible by a Starman) gives out only 100 points by default, unless the enemy was not one of the first to be defeated by the thrown shell.
In this game, three new species of Hammer Brothers appear: Boomerang Brothers, semi-common green-skinned (light blue in artillery levels in the original version) variants the throw boomerangs that can return to them; Fire Brothers, rare, red-skinned variants which spit bouncing fireballs like those of Fire Mario; and Sledge Brothers, huge, green-skinned versions of standard Hammer Brothers that can immobilize the player by causing earthquakes whenever they land after a jump. Unlike Hammer Brothers, however, none of these new variants are capable of jumping between rows of bricks and the ground, a skill that remained unique to the main species in most (but not all) of their future appearances.
A total of 19 Hammer Brothers appear in the game, though they are never seen in any actual level except for the first Hand Trap (which features all Hammer Brother species). Instead, they and their variants patrol the map screen of every world except Pipe Land and Dark Land (which instead have Piranha Plant and Hand-Trap levels, respectively, that serve a similar purpose); touching one there results in a battle with them. Upon defeat, they leave behind a treasure chest that yields an item. Hammer Brothers are encountered in the following worlds and can reward one of the following items:
- Grass Land: Starman
- Water Land: Hammer, Starman
- Sky Land: Starman, P-Wing, Music Box
- Ice Land: Hammer, Lakitu's Cloud, Starman
Whenever a certain set of conditions are met, one of the patrolling Hammer Brothers on the map is replaced by a Treasure Ship, a coin-filled airship with no enemies except for a pair of Boomerang Brothers faced at the end of the level.
In the original Super Mario Bros. 3, regardless of what type of Hammer Brother it represents, the enemy's icon on the map would always be that of a Hammer Brother. This was changed in Super Mario All-Stars, where the map icons in Desert Land were changed to reflect a Boomerang Brother and a Fire Brother, and the icons in Giant Land were replaced by green Hammer Brothers, since Sledge Brothers are green in all versions of Super Mario Bros. 3. A further change was made in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, where the map icons in Giant Land were made to properly resemble Sledge Brothers.
Besides the enemy Hammer Brothers, it was originally intended that there be a Hammer Brother that hosted a Dice game. This was implemented as late as testing, but was eventually cut.
The game also introduces a power-up, the Hammer Suit. This power-up gives Mario or Luigi the ability to throw hammers like a Hammer Brother, taking out stronger enemies like Boos, Dry Bones, and even Thwomps. They are also invulnerable to fireballs while crouching.
In the Game Boy Advance version, three more Hammer Brothers appear in World-e. In Bowser's Last Stand, the player can enter one of three doors, each leading to a tweaked version of the Hand Traps, with the first door leading to a room with all the Hammer Brother variants, including a pair of Hammer Brothers encountered after the section's first Boomerang Brother, stationed by two rows of eight bricks and an Advance Coin. A single Hammer Brother can also be found at the beginning of the second section of Koopaling Confusion, stationed by two wooden platforms under the level's third Advance Coin.
Super Mario World
Normal Hammer Brothers are absent from Super Mario World; instead, a variation of them known as the Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother makes an appearance. It is a stout Hammer Brother riding a winged platform. However, Hammer Brothers and Sledge Brothers were considered in development.[4]
New Super Mario Bros.
In New Super Mario Bros., Hammer Bros. (along with their cousins the Sledge Bros., Fire Bros., and Boomerang Bros.) appear once again. Their hammers, now in the form of claw hammers once again as opposed to mallets, are one of the few hazards that can damage Shell Mario even when crouched.
As with Super Mario Bros. 3, only one pair appears in one regular stage, jumping up and down two rows of blocks under and over the third Star Coin of World 2-4. Starting in World 5, however, Hammer Bros. begin appearing on the map in a method similar to Super Mario Bros. 3. However, unlike in Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario is not forced to enter an Enemy Course when he touches them on a map, but they will appear within the level they are over on the map if Mario selects said level, akin to the red Flying ? Blocks. Defeating them will cause a Fire Flower, Mini Mushroom, Mega Mushroom, 1-Up Mushroom or Blue Shell to appear.
Boomerang Bros. are the most common of the Hammer Bro variants in the game, with one found in World 2-5, two in World 7-3, and two more separate individuals in World 8-7, a level that also features the only two Sledge Bros. (mistaken as Sumo Bros., which are a different type of Koopa) and the only pair of Fire Bros. in the game.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Hammer Bros. appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, along with Boomerang Bros., Fire Bros., Sledge Bros., and a new variation called Ice Bros. that throw Ice Balls to first damage, then freeze, the player. Only four Hammer Bros. are seen (thus making them the second rarest type of Hammer Bro in the game, behind Boomerang Bros.), with two separate individuals and one pair encountered in World 1-3. Yoshi cannot eat Hammer Bros. (or any of their other variants), though he can catch their hammers with his tongue and spit them back at them, defeating them and causing them to release coins.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
After an absence from Super Mario Galaxy, Hammer Bros. and Boomerang Bros. reappear in the Wii game Super Mario Galaxy 2, marking the first time that they are seen in a three-dimensional Super Mario game that is not a spin-off title. In this game, they are much larger than in previous games. They attack by throwing two hammers aimed at Mario, before leaping elsewhere and repeating. As in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Yoshi can eat the Hammer Bros.' hammers and spit them out as weapons. Mario can defeat a Hammer Bro by spinning or jumping on him. The Hammer Bro is knocked on its shell as a result, which leaves him vulnerable to the next attack; Mario can walk into him or jump on him to defeat him. They usually only appear in Bowser Jr. or Bowser galaxies. These include Bowser's Lava Lair, Bowser Jr.'s Fearsome Fleet, Bowser's Galaxy Generator, and in the Grandmaster Galaxy. Though tough to do, a ground pound also defeats them instantly.
Super Mario 3D Land
Hammer Bros. appear along with Boomerang Bros. in Super Mario 3D Land. They act the same as in Super Mario Galaxy 2, except they take one hit to defeat, and they reuse the Boomerang Bros.' voice from Super Mario Galaxy 2. They mostly appear in castle levels. In Special 8-Bowser, Hammer Bros. hold blue + Clocks, and must be beaten to extend the level's short time limit.
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Hammer Bros. return in New Super Mario Bros. 2, having the same role as they did in previous games. Like every other enemy that is affected by the Gold Ring, Hammer Bros. become gold and throw three Coins each time instead of hammers while under the effect. Like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they appear in only one level during the adventure story, World 2-2, which features just three of them.
A total of 24 Hammer Bros. also appear in DLC courses. Four are featured in the third course of Challenge Pack A, one in the beginning of the second course of Coin Challenge Pack B, 15 in the first course of the Mystery Adventures Pack, and four in the final section of the first course of the Impossible Pack.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Hammer Bros. return along with their variants from New Super Mario Bros. Wii in New Super Mario Bros. U. Much like the Fire Brothers of Super Mario Bros. 3, only three of them appear in the entire game, with all three individuals appearing in a single level early in the game (as is the case in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. 2), Rise of the Piranha Plants, separated rather than being paired up. However, Hammer Brothers do make further appearances in two Coin Courses in World Coin-1 and World Coin-2, and also appear in several challenges. The same number of Hammer Bros. also appear in New Super Luigi U, with two separate individuals in Piranha Gardens (the game's equivalent of Rise of the Piranha Plants) and another stationed near the end of All Aboard!, an airship level which features every type of Hammer Bro, like the first Hand Trap of Super Mario Bros. 3.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Hammer Bros along with Boomerang Bros and Fire Bros reappear in Super Mario 3D World and its Nintendo Switch port Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury acting the same way as in Super Mario 3D Land. However, their hammers are thrown higher and closer to them, like in the 2D games, rather than lower and farther. Cat variants appear in Lake Lapcat.
Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2
Hammer Bros. reappear in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2 as enemies that can be placed into levels. The Hammer Bro, along with the Sledge Bro, have new sprites for Super Mario World. Unlike their past appearances, Yoshi is now capable of eating Hammer Bros. and spitting their hammers out. Giving them wings make them hop and jump higher. Fire Bros. only appear in the Super Mario 3D World game style in Super Mario Maker 2, as well as a new Sledge Bro-like version of them, Heavy Fire Bros. They are given brand new sprites in the Super Mario World art style, since they do not appear in that source game.
An unused death animation for them in the New Super Mario Bros. U style can be found in the files of Super Mario Maker.
Super Mario Odyssey
Hammer Bros. along with Fire Bros appear in Super Mario Odyssey as enemies found in the Dark Side, Metro Kingdom (where they don their traditional helmets), Luncheon Kingdom (where they don chef hats and throw frying pans instead of hammers), and Moon Kingdom (where they don white top hats). Mario can capture a Hammer Bro by first removing their headwear with Cappy, and then throwing Cappy at them a second time. As a Hammer Bro, Mario can use their weapons as an attack (as in his Hammer form) which can also hit ? Blocks, and in the Luncheon Kingdom, the frying pans can destroy blocks of cheese to reveal items hidden underneath. The game reveals that Hammer Bros. have blue spiky hair with yellow tips underneath their helmets, similar to that of a Chargin' Chuck. Hammer Bros. also appear in certain 8-bit segments in the Cloud Kingdom and Luncheon Kingdom, where they act the same as they did in Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Hammer Bros. reappear in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Like in the Super Mario Maker games, they can be eaten by Yoshi.
Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!
Although no Hammer Brothers appear amongst Bowser's invasion force at the beginning of the Super Mario anime film Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!, an individual one does appear later. This Hammer Brother (which, depending on the selected scene, is inconsistently depicted as both rather large and completely to-scale) is assigned to guard a cave where a recurring pair of Goombas trap Mario, Luigi, and Kibidango. However, Luigi (who was searching for coins at the time) digs an escape tunnel, and they escape from the Hammer Bro without being caught. In a last-ditch attempt to retrieve the prisoners, the Hammer Bro throws hammers at a cliff that Mario, Luigi, and Kibidango are trekking across, and causes the top of the cliff that Kibidango and Mario are on to fall, smashing the area that the Hammer Bro is on and burying him beneath several rocks.
Robed, book-carrying Hammer Brothers are later seen acting as singers during Bowser and Peach's wedding towards the end of the film, and another Hammer Brother is seen applying makeup to Princess Peach for the said event.
Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Momotarō
Hammer Bros. also appear in the Super Mario anime series. In Super Mario Momotarō, two elderly Hammer Brothers play the role as the adoptive parents of Mario and the parents of Princess Peach. They are called Ojīsan and Obāsan, the Japanese words for grandfather and grandmother.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
- “We got a score to settle, sink wimps!”
“Yeah! It's plumber pummelin' time!” - —Hammer Brothers, "The Trojan Koopa"
In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, two twin Hammer Brothers[5] first appear in the episode "Do You Princess Toadstool Take this Koopa...?" where they appear to attack Mario and Luigi when the two escape King Koopa's dungeon, only to accidentally hit each other on the head with their hammers instead. The second and last appearance of the Hammer Brothers is in the episode "The Trojan Koopa", where they appear as main antagonists and act as guards of King Koopa's island fortress.
In the show, they look similar to the Koopa Troopas in the series, with the only differences being the helmets, hammers, pinker faces, and yellow spots on their limbs.
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3
In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Hammer Brothers make minor appearances in a few episodes and their appearance changes once more, this time to better resemble their in-game appearances. Although Hammer Brothers do not make many appearances, their larger counterparts, the Sledge Brothers, are quite prevalent.
Two Hammer Brothers appear in "Oh, Brother!" After Kooky pulls Mario back through the pipe with the Plumber Pole through the Pipe World and into the dungeon, the pair of Hammer Brothers appear and apprehend Mario.
Hammer Brothers also appear in the episode "Toddler Terrors of Time Travel", where a team of them are loading crates onboard the Doom Ship. One Hammer Brother picks up the crate that Mario, Luigi, and Toad are hiding in and complains about how heavy it is as he carries it to the Doom Ship's helm, while another Hammer Brother effortlessly carries four crates at once.
Nintendo Comics System
In the Nintendo Comics System, several Hammer Brothers appear in the crowd of monsters chasing Mario in the story "The Fish That Should've Gotten Away". Several Hammer Brothers (although they do not wield any hammers) also appear to pester Toad, who had become a reporter, in the comic "The Kingdom Enquirer"; aside from these two appearances, Hammer Brothers also appear in several of the false advertisements that are featured in the comics.
Nintendo Adventure Books
In Koopa Capers, two Hammer Brothers bring Luigi to Bowser after a flying carpet deposits him outside Bowser's Castle. If Luigi decides to look around the castle for clues about Wendy O. Koopa's disappearance, Bowser tries to call in a Hammer Brother to act as an escort for him, but Luigi declines the offer.
While traveling through the Koopahari Desert in Pipe Down!, the Mario Brothers bring up a previous close call with some Hammer Brothers during a past visit to the region.
In Dinosaur Dilemma, two Hammer Brothers can be found sleeping in Bowser's Castle by Mario and Yoshi, and are woken up by their cuckoo clock as the two try to sneak out of the room. Depending on how the reader solves the accompanying puzzle, the Hammer Brothers either knock the heroes out and make a meal out of them, or their hammer blows keep missing, and weaken the floor to the point that they go falling through it while Mario and Yoshi escape.
In Flown the Koopa, if the reader chooses to have Luigi be the head of a Brachiosaurus costume the Mario Brothers don, they run into a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Depending on how the accompanying puzzle is solved, the T-Rex can turn out to be two disguised Hammer Brothers, who see through the Mario Bros.' costume, use some rubber cement to seal them in it, and capture them with the intent of making a meal out of the two.
Mario the Juggler
A Hammer Bro appears in Mario the Juggler, as an enemy exclusive to Game B that throws Mario a heart to juggle. Periodically, it catches the heart and then tosses it back at him.
Yoshi's Safari
In Yoshi's Safari, Hammer Brothers, as well as Boomerang Brothers and Sledge Brothers, occasionally appear as mini-bosses; in this game, Hammer Brothers attack Mario and Yoshi by quickly throwing hammers at them, which need to be dodged or knocked away by a blast of Mario's Super Scope. After being blasted repeatedly by Mario's Super Scope, a Hammer Brother is defeated.
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
Though Hammer Brothers themselves do not make a direct appearance in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, the Spiked Koopa boss has the Japanese name 「トゲブロス」 Toge Burosu ("Thorn Bros.") and wears a helmet vaguely like a Hammer Brother.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- “HEY! Are YOU lookin' at me? My hammer and I don't like you! Now ya got my hammer angry! Ya shouldn't have done that!”
- —Hammer Bro, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake, Hammer Bros are slightly different, with hammers made entirely of wood and bodies that are significantly larger than typical depictions. While they are updated to strongly resemble their modern design in the remake, they retain design elements from the original such as the black coloring of their shells and helmets, as well as the wooden hammers they wield.
A Hammer Bro appears at the end of Mushroom Way, and Mario must battle him to proceed to Mushroom Kingdom. If Toad has been previously rescued from Goombas and Paratroopas, the Hammer Bro also captures him in his rush to get to the castle, and needs to be saved by Mario. Although only one appears on the field, a second Hammers Bro appears in battle. During the battle, the Hammer Bros pound Mario with their hammers, and occasionally use the special move Hammer Time, throwing multiple hammers at him. When Mario defeats one of the brothers, the remaining brother uses the move Valor Up to increase his defense. When defeated, they yield a Flower Jar, and leave a Hammer behind.
Later in the game, a green-colored Hammer Bro named Dr. Topper appears in Bowser's Keep, which has been taken over by the Smithy Gang; Dr. Topper is not an enemy. Instead, he blocks Mario's progress through Bowser's Keep unless Mario solves his various puzzles and riddles.
Mario Party series
Mario Party
A Hammer Bro appears in the Mario Party minigame Hammer Drop, where it is seen riding a cloud, dropping coins, coin bags, and hammers. This is the first game where Hammer Bros. are shown to wear shoes.
Mario Party 2
A Hammer Bro appears in Mario Party 2 in the minigame Deep Sea Salvage on the ship throwing coins, coin bags and mines.
Mario Party 3
Hammer Bros. appear in the minigames Awful Tower, Puddle Paddle, and Parasol Plummet, throwing Coins and hammers.
Mario Party 5

Mario Party Advance
- “Hammers are my life! I'm a hammer champ!”
- —Hammer Bro, Mario Party Advance
In Mario Party Advance, a Hammer Bro appears in the Mushroom Field as a hammer thrower. According to his description, he is a world-renowned hammer thrower and is fond of challenges. When approached, he asks the player what they're doing at the "Hammer Camp". If questioned, he explains that the people there work constantly to improve their hammer throwing abilities, leading him to claim that he is very skilled at using hammers. After the player asks if they can participate, he demonstrates how to throw a hammer before starting their competition. Once the player throws their hammer farther than Hammer Bro, he says that he's impressed with the player's skill and gives them a trophy Gaddget, the Mini B-Ball.
Several Hammer Bros. also appear in the background of Hammergeddon.
Mario Party 7
Hammer Bros. later get an appearance as an orb once again in Mario Party 7. As with last time, they cause the player landing on them to lose ten coins, but the player that set the orb gains these coins. Four Hammer Bros. are featured in the eight-player minigame Hammer Spammer, where they stand on separate platforms and throw hammers at the players.
Mario Party 8
Hammer Bro appears as a playable character in Mario Party 8. He can be unlocked by beating the Star Battle Arena with Hammer Bro as the opponent in Bowser's Warped Orbit. In this board, Bowser randomly calls either him or Blooper to defeat the character that the player's playing as in a Star Battle Arena-Styled duel.
Mario Party DS
Hammer Bro continues his role as a non-playable character in Mario Party DS, this time in a more significant role, as a boss found in Toadette's Music Room. If a player lands on either of the big bongo drums on the board, Hammer Bro hits the drum, sending the player flying. The player with the most stars battles him in a minigame called Hammer Chime. In the minigame, the player has to memorize and copy Hammer Bro's drums beaten in limited time. He beats 3 drums the first time, 4 the second and 5 the third.
Mario Party 9
In Mario Party 9, Hammer Bro is a non-playable character once more. Hammer Bro, along with Fire Bro, are the co-hosts of the Battle minigames; one of them appears whenever a player lands on a Battle Space, though Hammer Bro shows up more frequently than Fire Bro. Hammer Bro takes three Mini Stars from each player, then makes them play a minigame, either the choice of the Captain or the player in last place. After the minigame, Hammer Bro distributes the Mini Stars back to each player based upon the results.
The Hammer Bro also has a constellation that can be bought in the Museum, named "Nail Shell."
Mario Party: Island Tour
In Mario Party: Island Tour for the Nintendo 3DS, Hammer Bros. appear in Match Faker and Tap Dash.
Mario Party 10
Hammer Bro reappears in Mario Party 10, where his role is the same as in Mario Party 9. This time, however, he takes five Mini Stars instead of three. A Sledge Bro also appears in the game as a boss.
Mario Party: Star Rush
In Mario Party: Star Rush, a Hammer Bro appears in the Coin Chaos minigame Pinball Brawl.
Mario Party: The Top 100
In Mario Party: The Top 100, a Hammer Bro appears when a board event happens in Minigame Match, where players steal coins from another player.
Super Mario Party
- “Yo! Take me with you! We can get Stars together!”
- —Hammer Bro, Super Mario Party
Hammer Bro returns as a playable character in Super Mario Party for the first time since Mario Party 8. His special Dice Block, the Hammer Bro Dice Block, can roll 1, 1, 5, 5, 5 or grant 3 coins.
Super Smash Bros. series
- SmashWiki article: Hammer Bro
In the first two games of the Super Smash Bros. series, Hammer Bros. only make a background appearance. In Super Smash Bros., Hammer Bros. appear in the background of the Mushroom Kingdom stage. Similarly, in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Hammer Bros. in the background of the game's version of Mushroom Kingdom.
Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a Hammer Bro has appeared as an Assist Trophy character throughout the Super Smash Bros. series Once released from the Assist Trophy, the Hammer Bro throws hammers at the opponents, damaging them. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Hammer Bro is invincible, like with most other Assist Trophy characters. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Hammer Bro can be attacked, and if it takes enough damage, Hammer Bro flips upside-down and falls off-screen, similarly to how they act when defeated in Super Mario Bros.
Hammer Bros. appear in a few of the single-player campaigns throughout the series. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Hammer Bros. are enemies in The Subspace Emissary. One appears to have helped steal Donkey Kong's banana hoard and is tracked down by Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. The Hammer Bros. can be damaged and defeated, unlike their Assist Trophy counterpart. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Hammer Bros. are enemies in Smash Run mode, where they behave almost identically to their Assist Trophy counterparts, except defeating them in this mode causes them to bounce around rather than fall off-screen immediately.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Hammer Bro appears as an Advanced-class Grab-type primary spirit, which also grants the user slightly increased jump height. In the corresponding spirit battle, the player has to fight Yoshi on the Golden Plains stage, with the Hammer Bro Assist Trophy appearing when the opponent is highly damaged. The core extracted from a Hammer Bro spirit can be used with a Reporter & Wrestler core to summon Masked Dedede's spirit.
Paper Mario series
Paper Mario
- “Nyuck yuck yuck... What took you so long, Mario? Ready to taste my hammer? Here it comes!!!”
- —Hammer Bro, Paper Mario
In Paper Mario, Hammer Bros., along with Koopatrols and Magikoopas, are the elite of Bowser's forces. In this game, Hammer Bros. attack Mario by either throwing one hammer at him or several, weak hammers at him. Hammer Bros.' attacks can occasionally shrink Mario on hit, reducing his Attack power for the duration.
A Hammer Bro can be first encountered in Paper Mario in the Shy Guy's Toy Box, if Princess Peach tells Bowser and Kammy Koopa that one of the things that Mario fears most is a Hammer Bro, Kammy Koopa later warps a Hammer Bro into the Shy Guy's Toy Box to guard a treasure chest. Hammer Bros. are also encountered throughout Bowser's Castle, where they act as guards, attacking Mario if he approaches. Additionally, a Hammer Bro by the name of Mr. Hammer runs a quiz called the 64th Trivia Quiz-Off, in which Princess Peach participates.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
- “My grandpappy's hammer is gonna strike you down, man! Here it comes!”
- —Hamma Jamma, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Hammer Bros. also appear in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In this game, they have the same attack pattern as in Paper Mario, although they are no longer capable of shrinking Mario. They are mainly found in Rogueport Underground after beating Chapter 5. A bunch of Hammer Bros. also appear when Bowser and Kammy summon their army to fight Lord Crump and the X-Nauts in Twilight Town.
There is also a Hammer Bro named Hamma Jamma in the Glitz Pit. His team is with his two brothers, Bamma, a Boomerang Bro and Flare, a Fire Bro. Hamma Jamma also speaks of his father and even his grandfather on occasion, the former of which he mentions is a Business Bro, apparently some sort of businessman version of a Hammer Brother. Also, in Bowser's first scenario, two Hammer Bros. converse, with one of them referring to something he witnessed where Bowser was apparently swooning over a portrait of Princess Peach, only for the other Hammer Bro to attempt to hint that he should stop talking as Bowser is right behind him. Although Bowser claims that the story was funny and beckons the surprised Hammer Bro to continue, both deny that he was funny.
Hammer Bros. can also appear as members of the Audience. If Mario fails the action command of a hammer attack, they can prepare to throw their hammer at him.
Super Paper Mario
- “We'll miss you, Your Surliness! Parrrrrty!”
- —Hammer Bro, Super Paper Mario
Hammer Bros. regain their role as hammer-flinging Koopas in Super Paper Mario, where they appear as a main species. Here, most Hammer Bros. are hypnotized by Nastasia into serving Count Bleck, though a few in The Bitlands still serve Bowser. They are found in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials as well. Like with many other enemies in this game, there is a shadowy version of them called the Dark Hammer Bro found in the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials.
One specific Hammer Bro and a Koopa private encounter Princess Peach after she wakes up at Castle Bleck. The captain goes on to free the others while ordering the Koopa Troopa to escort Peach to safety. However, during this time, he meets two hypnotized Koopa Troopas, one named Johnson. During the discussion between the two, Nastasia appears and hypnotizes the captain.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Hammer Bros. appear in many worlds of the game. These enemies, like many other returning enemies in the game, are updated to use their design from the main series. Hammer Bros. can attack by either tossing their hammers in the air to hit Mario from above or by throwing them straight at him. The hammer throw attack can come at Mario very fast so the player must be prepared for this attack. This attack as well can throw off timing by either blocking too early and the Hammer Bro waits for at least two seconds or Hammer Bros. can also throw the hammer before the player even has a chance to block for one second. Hammer Bros. also toss hammers outside of battle, which also damages Mario if he is hit. A glitch in the game has one Hammer Bro in Shy Guy Jungle standing in mid-air. Along with Hammer Bros., Snifits, Spinies and Scaredy Rats are the enemies that can throw off timing.
Paper Mario: Color Splash
- “Need a general contractor?”
- —Hammer Bro, Paper Mario: Color Splash
Hammer Bros. return in Paper Mario: Color Splash with their same attack and design from Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
They appear at different points of the game, along with their fire, ice, and boomerang counterparts. Sledge Bros. also serve as enemies in this game, as well as Shady Sledge Bros.
The first Hammer Bro found in the game appears in The Golden Coliseum, next to a ? Block, and in the same level, another one rides one of the three chariots during the Iggy Koopa battle, called Chariot Bro. Two Small Hammer Bros. attack Mario when he's about to get the second Mini Paint Star in Sacred Forest. Circus variations of Hammer Bros., called Juggler Bro, and Boomerang Bros., called Circus Bro, appear in Mossrock Theater and the Emerald Circus. The last one fights Mario in the black paint mixing room of Black Bowser's Castle next to a Boomerang Bro, two Fire Bro, and two Ice Bros. There is also another one in the background of that room monitoring to see that everything works correctly, but Mario does not fight him. A Hammer Bro is the third-round opponent in Roshambo Temple #4, although after Wendy O. Koopa is defeated, it is replaced by the Rock Paper Wizard until beaten.
Paper Mario: The Origami King
- “I can hammer all day, bro.”
- —Hammer Bro, Paper Mario: The Origami King
Hammer Bros. reappear in Paper Mario: The Origami King, where they act as allies to Mario, while origami Hammer Bros. appear as enemies. In battle, a Hammer Bro can attack using Hammer Throw, where the typical behavior is observed once more, or using Super Bro Throw. The latter involves the Hammer Bro grabbing another enemy, most often another type of Bro (e.g. a Fire Bro), and using it as a projectile to throw at Mario. The thrown enemy is defeated upon the user's execution of the move. Super Bro Throw is also known by Boomerang Bros., Fire Bros., and Ice Bros. to compliment their respective traditional projectile attacks. One friendly Hammer Bro in Shangri-Spa mentions that Hammer Bros' hammers "aren't just for throwing", as it is using the hammer to fix part of a small bridge.
Mario Kart series
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, a single Hammer Bro can be seen at the awards ceremony at the end of a Grand Prix alongside other characters. Similar to the Goomba, the Hammer Bro takes its design from Paper Mario.
Mario Kart Wii
Hammer Bro was originally planned to be playable in Mario Kart Wii along with Koopa Paratroopa, Petey Piranha and a Mii Outfit C (which in turn would have marked his debut as a playable character in the Mario Kart series), but was taken out of the final game. Hammer Bros. can be found in crowds on various courses, usually with Shy Guys, such as Mario Circuit.
Mario Kart 7
Hammer Bros appear in Mario Kart 7 as spectators on Toad Circuit.
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Hammer Bros appear in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as spectators in Bowser's Castle and 3DS Neo Bowser City.
Mario Kart Tour
A Hammer Bro appears in Mario Kart Tour as the opponent in the Vs. Mega challenge of the Rosalina Cup in the Baby Rosalina Tour. He uses his Hammers as his special item for the entirety of the race (although he did use a Mushroom at the very start).
He was also teased through the reflection of Baby Rosalina (Detective)'s magnifying glass in the splash art and at the start of the trailer for the Baby Rosalina Tour.[6] Hammer Bro made his official playable debut in the Mario Kart series on March 25, 2020, alongside a Boomerang Bro, an Ice Bro, and a Fire Bro, starting with the Hammer Bro Tour. He is classified as a Super character with his Hammers reprising their role as his special item. His emblem consists of a cartoon drawing of his head facing left, albeit lacking the eyes, similar to Dry Bones'.
Hammer Bro is the selected driver for some bonus challenges, including a Ring Race on RMX Rainbow Road 1 and a Time Trial on 3DS Shy Guy Bazaar R.
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
Hammer Bros. make minor appearances in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, which (for the most part) takes place in the Beanbean Kingdom. On their way to the Beanbean Kingdom, Mario and Luigi encounter the Border Bros. (Hammer Bros. that act as border patrol between the kingdoms).
When Mario and Luigi reach Bowser's Castle, they encounter enemy Hammer Bros. that (like the rest of the Koopa Troop) had been duped by Bowletta into defending the castle. Hammer Bros. themselves only appear in battle alongside Gunner Guys and Boos. The original version of the game gives them a somewhat nonstandard appearance; they have white pupil-less eyes, their shoes are missing, and they appear more hunched over and slightly portly, though not to the level of a Sledge Bro. They attack by throwing their hammers at the Mario Bros. in a way nearly identical to Rookie's hammer throw, albeit a bit faster; as with that attack, if the Hammer Bro jumps before throwing, it aims at Luigi, but if it does not, it targets Mario. The Mario Bros. must deflect the hammers with their own. Once a Hammer Bro loses half of its HP, it starts throwing two hammers per attack. They are healed by fire, but weak to thunder.
In Gwarhar Lagoon, a type of Boomerang Bro appears (renamed Beanerang Bro in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions). This game also introduces the Yo Bro, the Limbo Bro and their Elite counterparts, and the Chomp Bro.
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Hammer Bros. reappear as enemies in the main story, having their standard design, unlike Dry Bones and Spinies, which use designs invoking the off-model designs from the original. They also appear as enemies and allies in the Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser mode. They first appear in the level "For the Love of Hammers", where they are found teaming up with the Hammerhead Bros. They fight Captain Goomba's squad to decide if they are going to join the squad or stay with the Hammerhead Bros. They tell the Hammerheads that they believe that they can push their hammer crafting to the limits by creating the Ultra Hammer, which the Hammerhead Bros. give to Mario and Luigi before Joke's End. Hammer Bros. are Ranged troopers and attack by throwing their hammers. Their Special Skill, Rain of Pain, involves them throwing multiple hammers at surrounding foes.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Only one pair of Hammer Bros. appears in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. The Shroobs brainwash them with mind-control helmets and order them to guard the Vim Factory. While mind-controlled, the Hammer Bros. introduce themselves as the L33T HAMM3R BROZ., and speak in the Internet "language" known as "1337-speak" (pronounced "leet speak"), as well as with capital letters. In the Japanese version, they speak completely in katakana, as opposed to hiragana,[7][better source needed] and in the Korean version, their speech is full of spelling and spacing errors. In French versions, they drop the 1337 aspect of their speech (with the exception of their names, which still render the "L33T" part) in favor of SMS-like speech containing various spelling errors. In German versions, they do not speak in 1337, but in broken sentences. The Spanish translation of the game removes the 1337 aspect of the characters entirely, and the only different speech pattern is robotic all-caps. It is possible that this happened due to difficulties with localization, as 1337-speak is extremely uncommon among online Spanish communities. One of them introduces themselves as the "L33T HAMM3R BROZ." due to the way they speak in the English version.
When Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi arrive in the Vim Factory, they are instantly confronted by the "L33T HAMM3R BROZ." After Mario and Luigi are captured by the factory's automated defenses, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi are forced to battle the Hammer Bros. In battle, the Hammer Bros. have 100 HP (90 in non-American versions) and attack by using the Knockback Bros. technique, a move from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Using his hammer, one Hammer Bro smashes the other into a ball, then hits him into either Baby Mario or Baby Luigi. To avoid the attack, the babies have to jump over the ball Hammer Bro as he approaches. Sometimes, the Hammer Bro's hammer breaks, sending the ball bouncing towards a baby. In this case, the baby brother should not jump, as the balled brother simply bounces over the baby's head.
After one Hammer Bro is defeated (or if one of the Hammer Bros is unable to attack), the other one is forced to fight by himself. To attack, the sole Hammer Bro tosses spinning hammers that roll on the ground. To defend against this attack, the Baby Mario Bros. have to jump over the hammers as they approach. To determine which baby he is aiming for, the player needs to watch what he does before throwing. If he hops, he throws it at Baby Mario, and if he rolls his eyes around, he throws it at Baby Luigi. Ultimately, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi have to work together and defeat the second Hammer Bro. Unlike most bosses in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, they use the same defeat animation of a normal enemy; the same thing happens with Junior Shrooboid, the Shroobs, and Kamek. Also, in the Player's Guide, the word "boss" is missing from the stat box.
After defeating the Hammer Bros., the Baby Mario Bros. destroy their mind-control helmets, thus returning the Hammer Bros. to their normal state. Free from Shroob influence, the Hammer Bros. begin to speak normally again (and even comment on the strange manner of speaking they were just using). Grateful for being released, the Hammer Bros. give the babies hammers, and teach them how to use the hammer and Baby Drill.
When the babies go into the vents and encounter a Spiny Shroopa, the Hammer Bros. teach them how to use the hammers in battle. Later, when the babies rescue Mario and Luigi, the Hammer Bros. return and show how to use the hammer while piggybacking in battle.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
While normal Hammer Bros do not appear in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Boomerang Bros. and Fire Bros appear in Somnom Woods and Neo Bowser Castle as enemies.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
Hammer Bros return as enemies along with their paper counterparts in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, but this time, they retain their appearance in other Super Mario games. During the events of the game, some Hammer Bros steal all of the Trio's Battle Command Blocks, and the Trio has to earn them back. Before they get the Flee command back, they can't attack the Hammer Bro at all, only being able to counterattack. Once they get the flee command, the player has no choice but to press for "Idle" to skip their turn.
Outside of this, Hammer Bros appear commonly in the Twinsy Tropics Dungeon, and stronger variations appear on the clouds above Sunbeam Plains. One Hammer Bro is also fought alongside a Paper Hammer Bro, a Spike and a Paper Spike as one of the Bowser Duo's last lines of defense in Neo Bowser Castle, with its stats from Twinsy Tropics Dungeon.
In battle, Hammer Bros walk up to the targeted bro and throw hammers at them. If the Hammer Bro throws a hammer while grounded, the bro must jump over the hammer, and if the Hammer Bro jumps before throwing a hammer, the bro must not jump. The Hammer Bro then charges at the targeted bro and must be jumped on to end the attack. Their only other attack involves them throwing a hammer in the air with another Hammer Bro or a paper counterpart; the foes may even swap hammers occasionally before throwing. These must be countered with the Mario Bros.' hammers. If a Paper Hammer Bro participates, their hammer falls after the regular hammers; if both the Hammer Bros involved are regular, both their hammers fall at the same time.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey
Hammer Bros. appear in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey as enemies and recruitable allies in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey mode. They are weak against Parabones.
Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix
During Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix two Hammer Brothers block the entrance of Mushroom Park to stop Mario (or Luigi) and Toad from getting the next Music Key from Wario. However, they only let them pass if Mario dances against them and wins. If the Hammer Brothers lose, Mario (or Luigi) can get into Mushroom Park.
Mario Baseball series
A Hammer Bro appears as a playable character in both games of the Mario Baseball series: Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers. Both games also feature a Fire Bro and a Boomerang Bro as playable character, though both of them are treated as palette swaps of Hammer Bro, and all three of them are teammates of Bowser in each game's Challenge mode. Hammer Bro uses a large hammer as his baseball bat. While Hammer Bro and Boomerang Bro use a hammer and boomerang respectively for batting, Fire Bro uses a standard bat with painted flames on it.
In Mario Superstar Baseball, Hammer Bro can be unlocked by completing Challenge Mode as Bowser. Fire Bro and Boomerang Bro function as separate characters, but statistically are nearly identical to Hammer Bros. (barring Fire Bro's run speed, which is slightly lower than the other two). Boomerang Bro puts a noticeable curve on all his hits, much like Boo and King Boo.
In Mario Super Sluggers, Hammer Bro, along with Boomerang Bro and Fire Bro, are now playable from the start, each exhibiting more varied stats than before. They have new fielding moves, during which they throw their weapon out a short distance and catch the ball. All of them use their standard voice introduced in Super Mario Strikers.
Super Princess Peach
Hammer Bros have a large role in Super Princess Peach, where they seem to be Bowser's most trusted minions. It is in this game that they storm Peach's Castle and kidnap Mario, Luigi, and the Toads. They are major characters, and they are led by the Army Hammer Bro. They also appear as generic enemies towards the middle of the game, and even A. F. H. Bros., who were absent from games for some time, reappear. Their militant role is changed, though, by the wild Vibe Scepter, resulting in sub-species such as the Calm Hammer Bro and C. A. F. H. Bro.
Mario Strikers series
Super Mario Strikers
In Super Mario Strikers, Hammer Bros appear as teammates and sidekicks to the game's captains. They are offensive teammates. Despite this, they are no different than the other teammates provided in this game. This is the first game that Hammer Bro is given a standard voice as opposed to his computer voice in Mario Party and in Mario Superstar Baseball. They typically exhibit a very cheery and positive attitude.
Mario Strikers Charged
Hammer Bros also appear as offensive teammates in Mario Strikers Charged. Here, they are very good at shooting and passing the ball, but are unable to tackle very well. Hammer Bro is also very slow in this game, possibly because he carries several hammers strapped to his back. Every time he shoots or tackles, he uses the hammers from the sling on his back.
Hammer Bro also pulls out these hammers when hitting, faking, and using his skillshot. His Deke allows him to pull a giant hammer out of nowhere, and smash it on the ground to blast anyone he hits away. Despite not having a large range, it is nonetheless a decent defense as it temporarily paralyzes players that come in contact with it.
His Skillshot is the Hammer Throw, which, once fully charged, causes Hammer Bro to leap into the air and toss hammers at the Kritter, the goalkeeper, nailing him to the ground and thus immobilizing him. This leaves the goal open for a few seconds. Once the Kritter is stuck to the ground, the Hammer Bro smacks the ball in for an easy shot. However, the Hammer Throw has a limited range, meaning that it must be used not too far from the goal to be effective.
Mario Golf series
Hammer Bros. appear only twice in the Mario Golf series, both times as non-playable characters. In Mario Golf: World Tour, Hammer Bros. are featured in the Castle Club mode. In Mario Golf: Super Rush, there are Hammer Bros. scattered around Bonny Greens's practice area.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Hammer Bros return in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS ports, appearing in Drift-Along Canyon and Battle Tower Blitz (one of them standing in this level on two Goomba Towers, jumping from one to the other). In the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game, Hammer Bros are also found in the bonus level, Uptown, Downtown.
If the Hammer Bros are interacted with using a pointer/touch screen, they jump to a new position immediately once they are no longer stunned. They cannot be stunned while jumping.
Mario Sports Superstars
Hammer Bro appears as a selectable sidekick for the soccer and baseball sports of Mario Sports Superstars. Similar to the Mario Baseball series, Hammer Bro is classified as a Power type. Boomerang Bros. appear as alternate colors in soccer and baseball while Fire Bros. are exclusive to baseball.
Minecraft
In the Super Mario Mash-up for Minecraft, Zombies are replaced by Hammer Bros.; additionally, Zombie Villagers are replaced by Hammer Bros. wearing the Villager's clothing. Hammer Bro also appears as a playable skin.
Mario Tennis Aces
Hammer Bros. appear in Mario Tennis Aces in the final world of the game, Inferno Island. They appear in two missions: Sure Shot Challenge (Advanced) where two Fire Bros. and one Hammer Bro pitch the ball at the player, and the mission at Castle Gates, Defeat Bowser's Minions!, where the player must defeat ten Hammer Bros. by reflecting their hammers that they throw at the player and, once the ten are defeated ten Fire Bros. appear and the player must do the same, except with the Bros.' fire. Hammer Bros. are also found as audience members in various stages, where some can be seen wear caps and shirts for the participating characters. They wear their caps over their helmet.
Dr. Mario World
Hammer Bros. appear in Dr. Mario World as assistants. Their stage mode skill increases the float time of floating objects such as capsules, bubbles, and keys by a multiplier. Their versus mode skill grants a chance that a column is cleared in the player's stage when their opponent uses a skill.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Hammer Bros. appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie as a part of Bowser's army.
General information
Physical description and traits
Hammer Bros are yellow Koopas with green shells, cream-colored belly plates, and, since Mario Party, green shoes (although they sometimes are barefoot), as well as green and white helmets (though the colors change depending on the variant). They look like Koopa Troopas, but have a taller stature, smaller blue eyes and a lighter-colored muzzle. Hammer Bros are notably always armed with black or gray hammers tied to wooden handles with rope. In Super Mario Bros. 3, Hammer Bros wear black shells and helmets, while their hammers are slightly less detailed. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Hammer Bros are given a more realistic appearance than their Super Mario depiction, having a monotone appearance, as well as highly detailed hammers and helmets. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, however, Hammer Bros have a vibrant, cartoonish appearance with less detailed hammers and helmets; in the latter, their helmets and shoes have a lighter green color. In the DIC Entertainment Super Mario cartoons, Hammer Bros have drastically altered appearances, due to appearing with much darker skin tones, smaller body proportions, gray goggles, and shinier hammers.
In the first three Paper Mario games, Hammer Bros are given an altered design, which has them wear blue helmets instead of their standard green ones and have more rotund body proportions resembling those of Koopa Troopas. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Hammer Bros are given red shoes and spiked armbands, which reappear in Super Paper Mario. From Paper Mario: Sticker Star onward, however, Hammer Bros use their current-era design instead, while appearing with a paper outline.
Powers and abilities
Hammer Bros possess superior agility, due to jumping as high as Mario (if not as high as Luigi) and quickly traversing small areas from hopping. Hammer Bros hop very frequently, to the point where they hop while idling. In the way of weaponry, Hammer Bros use black or gray construction hammers, though Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars and the Paper Mario games depict them with wooden mallets instead. In most games, Hammer Bros throw their hammers at lower angles and farther distances, or higher angles at closer distances. The former games have Hammer Bros smack their adversaries with their mallets as a melee attack; exclusively to the Paper Mario series, Hammer Bros. throw a barrage of smaller, weaker hammers, or a hammer with magical abilities like shrinking. Hammer Bros' Skill Shot in Mario Strikers Charged has them attack the opposing team with a giant hammer, to daze them.
Speech
In most older Super Mario games, Hammer Bros are completely silent due to technical limitations. Most of the Super Mario RPGs and spin-offs give Hammer Bros in-game text so others can understand what they are saying; in Super Mario RPG, Hammer Bros appear to speak with Brooklyn accents, often saying "ya" instead of "you." In the DIC Super Mario cartoons, Hammer Bros were given intelligible voice acting with Brooklyn accents. Hammer Bros also speak intelligibly in various Super Mario comics, as well as Super Mario-kun. In contemporary Super Mario games, Hammer Bros (and their variants) are portrayed by Motoki Takagi, who provided them with grunts, yells, and even a few lines such as "Let's go." While they generally have a high-pitched voice, they have a deeper voice in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
