Message Block, Yoshi's New Island

Goonies are enemies introduced in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They are white birds that are likely based on the snowy albatross, also named a "goonie" or "gooney bird", but Goonies have been described as being "seagulls".[1]

History[edit]

Yoshi series[edit]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

Goonies are enemies in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake. They are found in most mountain levels, usually in groups. Some of them carry Shy Guys or bombs, in the manner of Albatosses carrying Bob-ombs in Super Mario Bros. 2. Goonies were introduced with several varieties with mostly self-explanatory names, including Flightless Goonies, Skeleton Goonies, the rolling Bowling Goonies, and the flying Hefty Goonies.

Yoshi's Story[edit]

Goonies (also known as Bomber Birds[2][3]) are enemies in Yoshi's Story. They are found only in Stage 3-3: Poochy & Nippy, sometimes with bombs, though gray Goonies do appear in Stage 5-4: Shy Guy's Ship. Goonies cannot hurt the Yoshis directly and make a constantly "Aa-ho!" noise, based on their Japanese name.

Yoshi Touch & Go[edit]

Goonies appear with Skeleton Goonies as enemies in Yoshi Touch & Go, during the ground portion, where hitting them with eggs earns Yoshi points.

Yoshi's Island DS[edit]

Goonies return in Yoshi's Island DS, along with Flightless Goonies and Skeleton Goonies. They are mostly the same as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, though their graphics are modified from their appearance in Yoshi Touch & Go. Goonies appear especially in Goonie Heights and The Goonie Coast Isn't Clear! A Hefty Goonie boss named Moltz the Very Goonie is the fort boss of World 5.

Yoshi's New Island[edit]

Goonies are enemies in Yoshi's New Island, as well as their varieties Skeleton Goonies, Flightless Goonies, Flightless Skeleton Goonies, and Hefty Goonies. Many Goonies appear in Fine Feathered Friends or Foes?.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]

Goonies have an amigurumi appearance in Yoshi's Woolly World and its port, matching the game's aesthetic. They are first found in Fanciful Fluff and Feathers. Goonies can become yarn balls if eaten, and Yoshi can stand on a Goonie to rise up. Hitting a Goonie with a yarn ball causes it to lose its wings and become Flightless Goonies.

Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]

Goonies return in Yoshi's Crafted World, working the same as in previous games of the Yoshi series, with emphasis on their purpose of being used for transportation. Goonies are first found in Windward Way. Crafts of Goonies and Flightless Goonie are in Pirate Pier, Windward Way, Bombs Away on Pirate Island, Slip-Slide Isle and Open, Shut!, and a constellation of a Goonie appears in Ride the Stars.

Tetris Attack[edit]

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Goonies appear in the background of Super Happy Tree, introduced in Super Smash Bros., and Yoshi's Island, introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There is also a Sticker of them in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Game & Watch Gallery 3[edit]

Goonies are interactable in Game & Watch Gallery 3, where they are platforms for delivering packages between Toad and Mario in the Modern Turtle Bridge. Certain Goonies dive at passing balloons.

Paper Mario[edit]

Mario Kart series[edit]

Goonies appear rarely in the Mario Kart series. The only time they are interacted with is in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, where their name is Little Birdies, [4] flying away if players get close. Goonies are also background elements of the Yoshi's Island track in Wave 4 of the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Tour.

Nintendo Puzzle Collection[edit]

Flocks of Goonies appear to the right upon clearing a stage of Round 5 in the Action Mode of Yoshi no Cookie in Nintendo Puzzle Collection.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its port shows Goonies flying out of trees whenever Bowser attacks during the Bowser's Castle and Tower of Yikk battle.

Unused appearances[edit]

Unused sprites of a Goonie found in Super Princess Peach

Goonies have unused enemy graphics in Super Princess Peach, ripped from Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 with a darker palette.[5] However, Skeleton Goonies and Flightless Skeleton Goonies make a background cameo in Wavy Beach.
