Sentinel
Sentinels[1] are small, flying creatures that appear in Paper Mario. They appear exclusively in Chapter 3 and guard Tubba Blubba's Castle.
Design[edit]
Sentinels somewhat resemble UFOs or claw catchers, having a gold, star-shaped antenna atop their heads, a beige, cloth-like body, beady black eyes, and three grey, rounded claws used to grab intruders. When pursuing Mario, they will gain an angry appearance and flash scarlet while emitting a siren wail.
History[edit]
Sentinels are found in Tubba Blubba's Castle during Chapter 3 and act as guards of the castle. If one spots Mario, it will begin to descend upon him. If they manage to grab Mario, he and his active party member will be thrown out of the castle. In order to avoid this, Lady Bow must use her Outta Sight move to turn her and Mario transparent, which will confuse the Sentinel and make it end its pursuit. Mario cannot engage in battle with them, nor can they hurt him.
When Tubba Blubba chases Mario and crashes the bridges above the main room, the Sentinels are crushed by the debris and are not seen for the rest of the game.
Quotes[edit]
If Mario is caught by a Sentinel, his active party member will remark on how to avoid getting caught after they are thrown out:
- Goombario: "Mario...If they catch you, they'll carry you out of the castle. Don't you think you can hide from them by using one of our party member's abilities?"
- Kooper: "Can't we do something so these things don't chuck us out of the castle? Doesn't anyone in our party have an ability that'll help us avoid them?"
- Bombette: "Mario, they'll throw us out of the castle if they catch us. Can we use a party member's ability so we don't get caught?"
- Parakarry: "This is not good. We'll be thrown out of the castle when they catch us. Can't we get around these creatures by using the ability of one of our party members?"
- Lady Bow: "These things will try to catch us and throw us out. Use my ability to turn invisible and we'll fool them."
Trivia[edit]
- The Gnips and Gnaw in Super Paper Mario serve a similar function as the Sentinels, which is to guard their assigned locations and throw out trespassers.
