- “Today there's a party! This is the top of a big birthday cake! It looks delicious, but it just doesn't have enough decorations. Everybody, add more decorations to the cake, and help finish it! Use Strawberries to decorate it, and something good may happen.”
- —Koopa Troopa, Mario Party
Peach's Birthday Cake is board in Mario Party and Mario Party Superstars.
Overview[edit]
Peach's Birthday Cake is Princess Peach's board, taking place on a two-layered giant cake appearing to be of strawberry and chocolate flavors. The cake was made by Peach,[2] and it has a "Happy Birthday" message on top in Mario Party only. Players move around clockwise in Mario Party but the opposite way in Mario Party Superstars. There are several Happening Spaces on the floor. The Star Space is fixed atop the cake. There are large decorative objects of the five cast members of Mario Party, except Peach, shown in a bowl of almonds in the original game. A choco stick is used to cross over to a yellow pudding, a detour from the Star Space leading to Bowser, later changed in Mario Party Superstars to a quicker albeit riskier route to the Star Space as well as having Bowser on a green and vanilla cookie sandwich. Players can go on the upper level of the cake using a "bridge," specifically made as pink and vanilla cookie sandwiches in Mario Party Superstars as well as having two separate entrances and exits. Both Mario Party and Mario Party Superstars do not have any Boo Space, unlike other boards in both games, with the Mario Party Superstars version also being the only without any Item Spaces.
Players explore the area differently between the games. The Start Space in the Mario Party version features players starting from a patch on the first layer and going clockwise. Mario Party Superstars changes the Star Space to a stack of plates, and players go counterclockwise, having to cross over to the main cake from a strawberry sugar wafer cookie.
In the ending of Mario Party, the winner's Stars combine to form a large Star that lights up the cake. The first three players are atop the cake, but the last-place player is attacked by a Piranha Plant, which Mario Party Superstars changes to show Piranha Plants sprouting to chew on the losers before spitting them out.
Events[edit]
- Players who reach Goomba are forced to participate in the Flower Lottery by paying ten Coins, or all of them if they have a lower number. The player chooses one of four seeds, which are colored red, blue, yellow, and green in Mario Party respectively though the Mario Party Superstars version gives them different sizes. The actual difference is that one has Bowser's face imprinted inside, but the other three each have Toad's face (changed to pink flowers in Mario Party Superstars). Choosing a seed with Bowser's face means that the player "wins" and may continue to Bowser, also resetting the Flower Lottery, but choosing any other seed means the player "loses" and proceeds to the Star, or to return to the beginning in Mario Party Superstars, as the Flower Lottery comes after the Star Space.
- Upon meeting Bowser, the player loses 20 coins and gets hit by a bogus Bowser Cake. In Mario Party Superstars, Bowser sometimes gives a Cursed Dice Block for 11-20 coins, but the last-place player always gets 5 coins from Bowser.
- From a Happening Space, a player can pay 30 Coins to plant a Strawberry Seed (replaced by a Piranha Pod in Mario Party Superstars) that forms into a Piranha Plant. It takes away a Star from any opponent who lands on the space and gives it to the other player, though the Piranha Plant disappears after doing so and does nothing if the opponent has no Stars. Mario Party Superstars allows players to plant a smaller Piranha Plant for 5 Coins, stealing Coins instead. If a player lands on a space with their Piranha Plant or cannot afford to add one to an empty space, nothing occurs. In Mario Party Superstars, the player does get coins from their Piranha Plant, and they can upgrade it to one that steals a Star, if they can afford it.
- Mario Party Superstars has a Happening Space near the shop where a player can slide down a wafer bridge and bypass the Flower Lottery.
