Tolstar is a large Spike who appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions.

History[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

Tolstar
Tolstar is fought in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

Tolstar is the first major boss of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. When Bowser gets trapped in Tolstar's cannon at Stardust Fields, both Mario and Luigi are charged by Tolstar to pay all of their Coins to free him, Tolstar also offering to not tell anyone. Mario offers Coins from the Mushroom Kingdom that are worth much less in the Beanbean Kingdom, always equaling 10 Beanbean coins, so Tolstar demands 100 Beanbean coins. Even after the brothers manage to collect the required number of Beanbean coins around Stardust Fields, Tolstar refuses to free Bowser and attacks the brothers, starting the boss fight.

In battle, Tolstar attacks by throwing spiked balls, which appear in his hands, unlike regular Spikes. Tolstar targets Mario or Luigi by throwing using his left or right hand, respectively. If Tolstar laughs before throwing a spiked ball, it will bounce over the brother, in which case jumping will damage the brother. In the remake, Tolstar drops the Cosmic Pants after being defeated.

After defeating Tolstar, the Bros. are about to free Bowser, though Sergeant Starshade, annoyed by Bowser's complaints, does it before they can, causing Bowser to crash through the unconscious Tolstar and end up in an unknown location.

A beaten up Tolstar is last seen flying over Hoohoo Village using the miniature wings on his shoulders. Mario and Luigi are accused by the Beanbean troops for kidnapping Prince Peasley, but Tolstar informs the guards whom the brothers are, recognizes them as tough, and says that they did not kidnap Prince Peasley.

General information[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Tolstar is a large, light-green Spike with a yellow belly, orange lips, pink hair, and small bat-like wings that are capable of helping him fly, unlike regular Spikes. He also has a big pink star on his belly and a small yellow one on his forehead. Also, when he becomes angry in the original Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Tolstar develops a hot pink blush on his cheeks.

Personality[edit]

Tolstar is a bully, which is shown when he is taunting Bowser for being stuck in his cannon, causing the latter to cry in embarrassment. He is also shown to be very greedy when he tells Mario and Luigi that he will only help Bowser out for 100 coins and when he declined their Mushroom Kingdom coins, and also a swindler when he still refuses to help Bowser after taking the Mario Bros.' coins. He seems to dislike anyone who lives outside the Beanbean Kingdom when he tells the Bros. "outsiders begone" and starts to attack them. However, after Mario and Luigi defeats Tolstar, he seems to respect them when he tells the Beanbean troops that they are innocent (and really tough).

Tolstar also has his own laugh, much like Cackletta, Fawful, Prince Peasley and Queen Bean.

Notes[edit]

  • In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Tolstar's talking voice changes to a more gruff voice during the battle, while in the overworld, he has a high-pitched talking voice.
  • In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the battle refunds all the coins given to Tolstar before the fight. However, in the remake, the fight only rewards the required 100, so any other coins are lost.
