Birdo's Eggs[1] are projectiles spat or sometimes thrown from Birdos. They can be plain white, but have also been shown to have pink or magenta spots in different shapes in some appearances.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

A Birdo firing its egg at Mario

Birdos and their eggs make their first appearance in the American release of Super Mario Bros. 2 (and in the Japanese-only game, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic that it is based on). Here, Birdo's Eggs are plain white and are spat by Birdo and sometimes by the red variant. In many levels, the only way to damage Birdo is to jump on top of the egg and pick them up and throw them back at her, although sometimes alternatives to these eggs exist, such as Mushroom Blocks. If a Birdo's Egg hits a wall, it will very lightly rebound and fall off from the screen, though the player can still ride on the egg while it falls until the player lands on something solid.

In World 4-3, a Birdo's Egg is mandatory to ride on top of to the otherwise impassable ocean to reach the main dungeon where Fryguy's lair is located.

In the SNES remake, Super Mario All-Stars, Birdo's Egg behaves the same way as its predecessor, with the addition of a Birdo holding an egg in the Game Over screen.

BS Super Mario USA[edit]

In BS Super Mario USA, Birdo's Egg behave the same way as in the predecessor, though Birdos can also throw multiple eggs in the air and sometimes can throw bigger ones.

Super Mario Advance[edit]

In the Game Boy Advance remake, Super Mario Advance, in addition to Birdo's Eggs behaving the same way as in the original game, the giant variety returns from BS Super Mario USA, shot by Robirdo. Apart from their size, they behave as normal Birdo's Eggs, though they take more time to pick up depending on the character. They can hurt the protagonists, or be grabbed and thrown back to damage the boss. Birdo holds an egg in the game's logo, when the player chooses a game, and also on the Super Mario Bros. 2 Game Over screen.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show![edit]

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Birdos try to spit their eggs at the protagonists in some episodes.

"Jungle Fever"[edit]

In "Jungle Fever", one Birdo is able to use its egg to bring down an Albatoss carrying Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad.

"Toad Warriors"[edit]

In "Toad Warriors", King Koopa assigns three Birdos to act as the guns of his three State Troopa cars by firing eggs at the Rebel Fort while perched atop the vehicles. After the Mario Bros. arrive, King Koopa decides to use the Thunderbirdo to attack the fort. Thunderbirdo is driven in on another vehicle, controlled by Mouser, where it proceeds to attack the fort with a gigantic, explosive egg. Afterwards, King Koopa uses normal Birdo fire until a rebel force, which includes Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad, leave the fort using a tanker full of spaghetti sauce as bait.

"Crocodile Mario"[edit]

In "Crocodile Mario" when Mario and Luigi pass by some Birdoroos' territory on a raft, several of them launch an onslaught of eggs in their direction, which they barely manage to dodge.

Nintendo Comics System[edit]

Nintendo Comics System "Bedtime for Drain-Head": Mario attacks a Birdo using its own eggs.
Mario defeating the Birdo guard with a Birdo's Egg in a Nintendo Comics System comic.

As seen in the Nintendo Comics System comics "Bedtime for Drain-Head" and "Betrayal Most Proper", after losing control of the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser employs Birdos as castle guards. Mario battles these guards on two occasions. Under the delusion that he is Dirk Drain-Head in "Bedtime for Drain-Head," Mario enters Bowser's Castle to save Toad. After laying waste to a large number of enemies outside of the castle, a Birdo blocks Mario's path and shoots eggs at him as he tries to enter the castle. However, Mario quickly picks them up and throws them back, defeating this Birdo similarly to the Birdo in Super Mario Bros. 2.

The second encounter with Birdos occurs in "Betrayal Most Proper" as Mario and Toad attempt to rescue Wooster, who are then attacked by Birdos in Bowser's Castle. When their movement becomes impaired by a conveyor belt moving in the opposite direction, the Birdos begin firing eggs. Rather than defeat the Birdos, they simply run off.

Main articles: Shelly, Eggbert

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, a Birdo hatches from a giant egg known as Shelly. Birdo can speak to Mario through the eggshell and requests a battle with him and his partners, and their attacks eventually split the egg open. Now hatched, the Birdo can attack Mario and the others with explosive Eggberts, rather than normal Birdo's Eggs, although Birdo holds a Birdo's Egg during battle.

This is the first game to feature a type of Birdo's Egg having spots.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

Birdo's Eggs appear as two-dimensional Super Mario All-Stars sprites in the stage Mushroom Kingdom II, which is a representation of Super Mario Bros. 2. Sometimes, Birdo comes out from the side of the stage and shoot eggs, hurting any player who comes in contact with them. Like in Super Mario Bros. 2, these eggs could be jumped upon and picked up by the playable characters. Birdo can also be damaged by throwing the eggs back at her.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

As the Mushroom Kingdom II stage returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Birdo's Eggs in their two-dimensional Super Mario All-Stars sprites return having the same function like in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Mario Golf series[edit]

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour[edit]

Birdo's Eggs appear in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, making a cameo in Birdo's best post-hole animations, where she spits them out in celebration.

Mario Golf: World Tour / Mario Sports Superstars[edit]

Birdo's Eggs make a cameo in Mario Golf: World Tour and Mario Sports Superstars. When Birdo gets a Double Bogey or worse, she hurls eggs at the camera, then one of them bounces back and hits her.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Birdo appears as a playable character, and her Special Item are Birdo's Eggs. They behave the same as Birdo's counterpart, Yoshi's Eggs, but they are covered in pink spots (Yoshi's are green). Once thrown, the eggs home in on the nearest character above Birdo and her racing partner in rank. Upon collision, the kart that is hit flips, and the Birdo's Egg breaks and releases three items at random. These items can include Bob-ombs, Stars, Mushrooms, Red or Green Shells, Fake Item Boxes, or Bananas. Birdo's Eggs also break if they hit stray items or environmental hazards, and if they go long enough without hitting anything they self-destruct. The eggs are also one of the only two Special Items that Petey Piranha and King Boo cannot get, the other being the Green Fireball.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

Birdo's Eggs reappear in Mario Kart Tour as Birdo's special item once again, as well as the special item of Birdo (Light Blue), Birdo (Yellow), Birdo (Orange), Birdo (Red), and Birdo Mii Racing Suit. They function like they do in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, and like the Yoshi's Egg. Its design has been reverted back to being a spotless egg. When Birdo's Egg+ is active, the egg will be bigger, and will drop an extra item after hitting a racer.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

Birdo Eggs appear in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Birdo can spit out flaming eggs in a wild, sporadic way. Mario and Luigi must time their jumps to avoid the eggs and the resulting flame each of them creates after their impact. Birdo can also inhale Popple to place him inside one of four protective but big deadly egg shields which are simply referred to simply as eggs. One egg holds Popple; the other three each contain Designbomb-like enemies that will rush forward after their egg is broken open and need to be jumped over.

Birdo's Eggs returns in the Nintendo 3DS remake, with the same role as in the original game. In Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser, Birdo will aim in a similar manner to how Yoshis aim their eggs in the Yoshi franchise and she will spit a giant egg at Captain Goomba's crew.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Birdo's Eggs make a brief appearance in the background of Toadwood Forest.

Mario Baseball series[edit]

Mario Superstar Baseball[edit]

A Birdo's Egg bouncing from Birdo's Weird Ball

A Birdo's Egg appears Mario Superstar Baseball as Birdo's Special Ball that she can use. While pitching, Birdo throws the ball, and it bounces on one side of the ground and then bounces farther to the other side as it passes the batter. This can trick the batter, as the ball quickly bounces from one side to the other. However, this pitch can result in a ball.

If Birdo is batting, the ball is shot to the shallow outfield and bounces around the area. It works similar to Yoshi's Egg Ball, except the Weird Ball has pink spots rather than green spots, and bounces farther on the outfield.

In Challenge Mode with Yoshi, the player must obtain the Pink Egg Power-Up before being able to use this move for Birdo.

Birdo's Eggs appear on some of Birdo's team logos and marks on Yoshi's team, Yoshi Islanders.

Mario Super Sluggers[edit]

Birdo's Cannon Swing

In Mario Super Sluggers, a Birdo's Egg appears as Birdo's Batting special move Cannon Swing, where she spits an egg with pink bows printed on it instead of the one with the usual pink spots. Then Birdo slams the egg with her bat, so hitting the baseball thrown by the pitcher, which breaks the egg. Meanwhile, the baseball flies at a high speed, hitting the pitcher.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party 7[edit]

Birdo's Eggs make their Mario Party debut in Mario Party 7. While playing as Birdo and using the Egg Orb, the player takes a turn and passes any of the Character Spaces and will be turned into pink spotted Birdo Eggs and can spawn up to three. When the turn is done, the spaces are turned into orbs that Birdo can use. The Egg Orb can also eliminate Koopa Kid Spaces.

Mario Party DS[edit]

In Mario Party DS, a Birdo's Egg appears as a card in the minigame Memory Mash. These look the same as in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, as they are Yoshi Eggs with magenta spots instead of green. This is Birdo's only reference in the game.

Mario Hoops 3-on-3[edit]

Birdo's Egg Shot

Birdo's Eggs with magenta spots appear when Birdo uses her Special Shot in Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Egg Shot. After the move is executed, Birdo catches the ball in her snout, jumps, and spits it out toward the basket as an egg, with broken hearts trailing it. A puff of purple smoke appears after it lands in the basket, followed by several broken hearts and shards of the egg. If shot outside the 3-point line, the visuals do not change, but as usual, a teammate needs to catch the ball (egg) and dunk it in the basket.

Mario Strikers Charged[edit]

In Mario Strikers Charged, Birdo's Skillshot is the Extreme Egg, which has her shoot a large, white Birdo's Egg.

Captain Rainbow[edit]

Birdo's Eggs in Captain Rainbow

In Captain Rainbow, large, pink-spotted Birdo's Eggs can be seen mounted on either side of Birdo's House and are also seen inside the house as lamps. Birdo's Eggs also appear in the gallery of Birdo's concept art on the third page.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit]

Birdo's Eggs also appear in Mario Sports Superstars. Her special shot in baseball and soccer is similar to horse racing, but in baseball, the ball is encased in a spotted magenta Birdo's Egg. Due to golf reusing Birdo's animations from Mario Golf World Tour, spotless Birdo's Eggs reappear when she hurls eggs at the camera, then one of them bounces back and hits her.
