The Hammer Suit[1][2] (alternatively Hammer Bros. Suit,[3][4] Hammer Brothers Suit,[5] or Hammer Brother Suit[6]) is an item in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its remakes. It transforms Mario or Luigi into their Hammer transformation, giving him the ability to throw hammers, like the Hammer Brothers. Hammers thrown by Hammer Mario or Hammer Luigi can defeat almost everything, including Bowser, but as with other power-ups, one hit from an enemy causes them to lose their power. They also gain a fireball-proof shell when ducking (like Buzzy Beetles, which they resemble), but cannot slide down hills. Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 adds a new utility to this suit: its hammers can break Rock Blocks.

In the original Super Mario Bros. 3, retrieving a Hammer Suit will make Mario and Luigi's skin turn a darker, yellowish tone which resembles the appearance of Hammer Brothers in this game, while no other power-ups in the game do so. On the map screen, in castles after saving one of the kings, in the ending roll, in official artwork, and in other versions, Mario and Luigi's skin colors stay the same when they wear the suit.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Hammer Suit (as well as Hammer Mario) is not mentioned in the original version's or the Super Mario All-Stars version's instruction booklet, nor is it in the Virtual Console re-release's Operations Guide, based on the two aforementioned manuals. In the localized versions of the original game, it is something of a "secret" powerup, as it only shows up in hidden areas and randomly from Toad Houses. However, in the original Japanese version and all later enhanced versions, it appears consistently in the first Toad House of Ice Land.
