This article is about the enemies from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. For the enemies from Super Paper Mario with the same name, see Dark Koopatrol (Super Paper Mario).

The Dark Koopatrol, sometimes abbreviated as D. Koopatrol, is the stronger version of the Koopatrol and the strongest type of Koopa in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its Nintendo Switch remake. The Dark Koopatrol is one of the most powerful enemies in the game, with a very high amount of HP and Attack. They wear a spiky metallic helmet to prevent being jumped on. Much like the Dark Craw, the first Dark Koopatrol encountered, named The Koopinator, is found in the Glitz Pit. He is the last fighter Mario must defeat before his battle with Rawk Hawk.

Dark Koopatrols have similar attacks to ordinary Koopatrols, though they are unable to summon reinforcements or retreat into their shells. They retain Koopatrols' helmet spike charge attack as well as their shell attack, which hits both Mario and his partner much like the Power Shell move. Each of these attacks deals 5 damage. They can also become Charged, increasing the damage of their next attack by 5. Like regular Koopatrols, Dark Koopatrols can be flipped over by a ground-shaking attack such as Quake Hammer or if Mario jumps on one while wearing the Spike Shield badge, reducing their defense to 0, and they must struggle for one turn before standing up when flipped over.

While Dark Koopa Koopatrols slide toward Mario in their shells as a First Strike in the overworld, they actually use their helmet spike charge attack instead once the battle begins, if it hits.

Dark Koopatrols have the game's highest HP of all non-boss enemies in the game.

Trivia[edit]

  • Although the Tattle Log states Dark Koopatrols are elite members of the Koopa clan, the only Dark Koopatrols are found independently in the Glitz Pit and the Pit of 100 Trials and do not appear to be affiliated with Bowser's army like normal Koopatrols.
