Starmen are uncommon items which first appear in Super Mario Bros. and return with the same role in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. They are first seen in World 1-1 of the former game. When Mario or Luigi gets a Starman, they become invincible to any enemy or object except pits or time running out, and the invincibility theme plays. The Starman allows for enemies to be destroyed along the way. Invincibility is indicated by Mario's flashing sprites and the Starman theme which replaces the current soundtrack. After several seconds, the effects of the item wear off.
Super Mario Bros. is the first Mario game to feature a star. It is a very rare item, only found in some levels. When Mario or Luigi get it, the character will turn invincible and will change colors frequently. Any enemy that comes in contact with Mario is defeated immediately. However, the star's power is only temporary and it will disappear after a certain amount of time.

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros. 2
The Star returns in the same manner as in anything else that returns in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. They still grant Mario invincibility and the ability to defeat any enemy he touches.
Starmen return in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2. The player can obtain one by collecting five cherries in a level. Starmen spawn from the bottom of the screen before traveling upward in a zigzag pattern but otherwise work the same as before.

Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Starmen in Super Mario Bros. 3 are very similar to their appearance in Super Mario Bros., except they also allow for faster running. If Mario jumps when he is not Small Mario, he does flips in the air. This game also introduces the Continuous Starman chain, where certain ? Blocks contain stars instead of coins if the player character is invincible while hitting them. World 7-7 can only be completed while invincible. eventually gaining extra lives after achieving 8,000 points. The Star World theme is also a slowed-down variation of the Super Star theme.

The main difference, however, is that the player gains a combo, similar to a shell or a jump combo, when they defeat enemies. This results in increasing point values for each enemy, eventually scoring extra lives for each enemy.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Stars return in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. They no longer bounce upon being released from a block, and one can alternatively received from defeating 100 enemies.ref needed Unlike Super Mario World, Mario begins receiving extra lives from the fifth enemy defeated onwards. The Super Star theme is completetly different but is not the same as the one in Super Mario Land.

Stars make the player turn invincible in New Super Mario Bros. as always. In this game, however, they protect the Mario Bros. from being burnt by lava and being crushed. They are much more rare here and sometimes appear in hidden ? blocks. None of them can be found in Toad Houses, and there is no way to put one in the reserve. Mario and Luigi can run a lot faster when they are invincible. The star is the rarest item and can only be found in some levels, such as 1-1, 1-2, 4-6, 4-Castle, 6-2, 8-4, and 8-7. A different type of Star also appears exclusively in the multiplayer mode, a Big Star. Mario or Luigi have to collect the most of them to win.
Starmen retain their usual function and recurring background theme in New Super Mario Bros. They are much rarer and sometimes appear in hidden ? Blocks. Starmen are not found in Toad Houses and are the only item that cannot be a Stored Item. The star can be found in Worlds 1-1, 1-2, 4-6, 4-Castle, 6-2, 7-3, 8-4, and 8-7. In certain levels, using a Starman causes a trail of Blue Coins to spawn behind the player. In the Mario vs. Luigi mode, a Starman may potentially appear when Mario or Luigi collects eight coins, and a player is more likely to obtain a Starman if they are losing; the mode also features the Big Star variation, which have to be collected by Mario and Luigi.

Rainbow Star
Rainbow Star

Super Stars are replaced by Rainbow Stars in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, having the same function and having the same invincibility theme associated with it.
Although traditional Stars do not appear in Super Mario Galaxy, an item known as the Rainbow Star was introduced. When Mario uses the Rainbow Star, he becomes Rainbow Mario. There are mark differences between the two items. The Rainbow Star extends longer than the traditional Starmen. It also allows Mario to leave a trail of light after-images behind when running, change colours frequently, break certain objects, and defeat any enemy, turning them into Star Bits. If Mario keeps running without stopping, he'll put his arms out and continue to run faster and will be able to jump further. However, they cannot protect Mario from touching lava or getting crushed. The theme that plays after getting a Rainbow Star is a remixed version of the classic invincibility music and also similar to that of the Vanish Cap in Super Mario 64. Rainbow Stars reappear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 with the same function as the predecessor.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Stars are mostly found through Roulette Blocks or just regular ? Blocks in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Their only major differences is lighting up dark areas and the corresponding theme having a different arrangement. Stars can now be obtained from Toad Houses and stored in the overworld inventory. Multiplayer allows an invincible player to grab another to pass the power of invincibility to them.
In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Stars are mostly found through Roulette Blocks or just regular Question Blocks. They act very similar to the previous game, but with a different theme remix and they now have the ability to light up dark places entirely. The way to store a star is only possible in Toad Houses. If a player with a Star in effect grabs another player, they too will gain the power of invincibility.

Super Mario 3D Land
Super Mario 3D Land
Super Stars are more common in Super Mario 3D Land than previous appearances. Aside from their function in the three-dimensional playing field, Super Stars function the same as before, but extra lives can be earned after the fifth enemy onward. As the power-up starts wearing off, the corresponding theme speeds up, similar to the Rainbow Stars in the Super Mario Galaxy games, but speeds up in the second bar rather than the fifth bar like in Super Mario Galaxy, though the E3 2011 demo version had it the same as in the latter.
Super Stars appear in Super Mario 3D Land, and have the same abilities as in previous games. They are exceptionally more common in this game.

New Super Mario Bros. 2
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Stars reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2, functioning and behaving as in the previous Mario games. However, a new trait was added. When the player grabs a Star, most of the other ? Blocks will contain Stars temporarily. Also, the player is finally able to store a Star in the item reserve, but it is only possible in World Star. They do not appear as frequently as they have in Super Mario 3D Land.
Super Stars reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2, functioning like in earlier two-dimensional installments. A Super Star can only appear in the item storage by collecting it from the World Star Toad House.

Super Stars return in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and their port, working like they do in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Super Stars reappear in Super Mario 3D World and its port. They are mostly based on their appearance in Super Mario 3D Land, since the associated theme plays faster upon reaching the second bar. Like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the effects of a Super Star can be passed on to other players in multiplayer. Unlike before, the chain of points restarts after obtaining an extra life.

In the Bowser's Fury campaign of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Super Stars can be obtained randomly upon collecting 100 coins, like with other power-ups.

Super Mario Maker series
Super Stars are a placeable course element in Super Mario Maker, its port, and Super Mario Maker 2. They function no differently than in most 2D installments.

Super Mario Run
Super Stars reappear in Super Mario Run, following much of the same rules for appearances and moving as before. In this game, Super Stars still grant invincibility, but have the additional effect of magnetizing nearby coins and Bonus Medals to the user. Black Coins and Red Coins are resistant to this force. The Black Coins only shake left to right. In Toad Rally, collecting a Super Star will also start Coin Rush mode, with the meter glowing white until the effects wear off. In Remix 10, while Coin Rush is not an element, Super Stars grant an effect similar to it. The screen dims, more coins start to appear, defeating enemies is worth additional coins, ? Blocks that drop coins drop more coins, and ? Blocks that drop power-ups drop three power-ups instead of one. In Remix 10, every 100 coins the player collects resets the coin counter and gives them a bubbled power-up. If the player is Super, then a Super Star is provided.

Super Stars do not necessarily have to appear from blocks or from Red Coins. Certain courses, such as Follow That Shell! and Piranha Plant Field, have Super Stars bouncing around on their own for the player to collect.

The course Lakitu's Revenge has frequent Super Stars, such that the player can be invincible for most of the course.

There is a Super Star Statue item in the Kingdom Builder mode, The 8-bit Super Star Trim and 8-bit Super Star Statue are other Kingdom Builder items that use the Super Star's appearance from Super Mario Bros. Three Super Stars are depicted on the top of Princess Peach's Cake.

Super Mario Bros. 35
Super Stars appeared in Super Mario Bros. 35, working mostly like in Super Mario Bros., though the Item Roulette had a chance of granting the player a Super Star.

New Super Mario Bros. U
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Stars are common in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. They can attract coins over, retaining the ability from Super Mario Run. In multiplayer, the ability to pass a Super Star's effects to other players has also been retained. Instead of a scoring system, ratings appear in the order of "Good", "Great", "Super", "Fantastic", "Excellent", "Incredible", and "Wonderful"; from then on, each consecutive defeat awards the player a 1-Up.
Super Stars return in New Super Mario Bros. U and function the same way they did in New Super Mario Bros. 2. They appear in many of the game's levels, often being used to walk over dangerous Muncher plants or light up dark areas. Also, there is a new purple Star called the Boost Star, which allows the player using Boost Mode be able to destroy enemies by tapping them.

Starmen also make several appearances throughout the three Super Mario animated cartoon series produced by DIC Entertainment.

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, they did not grant invincibility; they instead could power-up Mario and Luigi into Fire Mario and Fire Luigi, giving them increased strength and the ability to shoot fireballs. The person wielding the Starman, often Mario, would usually recite, "Starman, star bright, give me pasta power, give me pasta might", before powering up. This power would last until either a fair bit of time elapsed, or they were attacked by an enemy. However, Fire Flowers, along with other powerful artifacts such as Magic Pendants, could also be used in lieu of Starmen in order to power-up. In "Toad Warriors", Toad managed to transform into the Toad Warrior by using a Starman, although in the next episode, "The Fire of Hercufleas", he transformed into Super Toad by using a Fire Flower.

Starmen continued to make appearances into The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. In these appearances, they no longer followed the rules of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. Instead, they granted temporary invincibility, just like in the games.
Starmen continue appearing into The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. Their role is more consistent with the games, granting only temporary invincibility. Unlike the Cape Feather and Fire Flower, both Mario and Luigi are seen using the Super Star in Super Mario World: Luigi collects one to dispose of the Caterpillars in "Party Line", and Mario collects one from one of the "dizzy stars" that appear after he is knocked out by an evil dinosaur in the same episode. Mario also collects one when he escapes Neon Castle with Yoshi in "The Yoshi Shuffle".

Stars were used differently in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, its remake and its follow-up when they were smiley faced, with blue shoes. They can be found by the player by defeating certain enemies and hitting some Winged Clouds. They were used when Baby Mario fell off a Yoshi's back. The Stars would somehow make a bubble around the screaming infant, protecting him from the evil Toadies until the power of the Stars ran out. Every Star collected would add one second to the Star meter, and collecting 30 of them was essential to get a Perfect on a level. There are also packs of Stars that come in 10 or 20. Also, "Super Stars", found only in a few levels, seals the Yoshi in a huge egg, and Baby Mario would become invincible, and sport a Cape, which allows him to glide long distances. After a certain amount of time, the Yoshi would return to normal and Baby Mario once again would seat himself on his back, losing his cape and invulnerability. The Super Stars in this game look like normal invincibility stars, but without a face.
Stars appear in all Mario Kart games, serving as a rare item that only low-ranking drivers can get. Stars make the player who uses it invincible to all attacks and able to knock over items, course obstacles and other drivers, which in some games makes the player lose their current items. The player receives a speed boost increasing their average speed by 1/3 and is able to cross off-road terrain without losing any speed (Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart: Super Circuit are exceptions, as the item doubles their speed in those games). The invincibility lasts for different time periods depending on the game: 6.13 seconds for Super Mario Kart, 10.13 seconds for Mario Kart 64, 6.3 seconds for Mario Kart: Super Circuit, 7.6 seconds for Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, 7.46 seconds for Mario Kart DS, 7.42 seconds for Mario Kart Wii, 7.46 seconds for Mario Kart 7, and 7.54 seconds for Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Super Mario Land series
In some places, Stars can be obtained through special Item Boxes. One is in DK Pass, where there is an Item Box on top of a hill. If the player, in any position, touches said Item Box, the player may receive a Star, Triple Mushrooms, a single Mushroom, or, very rarely, a single Red Shell. The same rule applies for Chain Chomp Wheel, except that Red Shells and Triple Mushrooms are absent.
Super Mario Land
Stars make a return in the game, Super Mario Land. Little has changed between the preceding game and this game regarding gameplay effects. The music, however, is different than the ordinary music. The music is actually 2 loops of an excerpt of the famous cancan.
Starting in Mario Kart Double Dash!!, the player can steal Balloons and Shine Sprites in Battle Mode when hitting people with the Star in the applicable modes. From Mario Kart Wii onwards, due to the introduction of Coin Runners, Coins can also be stolen in the same way.

The Star is also the emblem of the Star Cup in every Mario Kart game to date. Also, it is obtainable as an uncommon item from 2nd to 8th place in Mario Kart 64, 6th to 8th place in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (approximate positions used due to there not being a known item probability table for Double Dash!! or Super Circuit), and 5th to 8th place in Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7, as well as 7th to 12th place in Mario Kart Wii.

In Mario Kart Wii, the Sugarscoot has a star emblem on its spare tire on the rear. In this game, when characters acquire this item, their voice will echo, with the exception of Rosalina, whose voice will echo even more, as her voice already echoes. Some of the leaf piles on Maple Treeway, including in the section with the Wigglers and the section before the finish line also have the potential to drop Stars when driven through. Players under the effects of the Mega Mushroom can get hit by this item. Up to three Stars can be in play at a time.

In Mario Kart 7, all courses that have obstacles that drop items when broken (like the jars on Shy Guy Bazaar) have the potential to drop a Star when they do so.

In Mario Kart Arcade GP, Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, and Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, the Super Star appears again.

In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Princess Peach statue in Toad Harbor can be seen holding a Star in its raised right hand. Additionally, in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, if the player has purchased the Booster Course Pass DLC or currently has a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, a small icon of a Star can be seen next to the version number on the game's title screen.

Unlike in previous installments, Stars themselves do not appear as collectible Item Box items in regular single-player races in Mario Kart Tour. Instead, getting a Frenzy has the same effects as using a Star, with the same invincibility music from Mario Kart 8 playing, while its icon appears on-screen if another racer behind the player is in Frenzy mode. Stars found in Item Boxes appear in multiplayer mode when the rules have less than three item slots, as frenzies are unobtainable then. Stars are also found in certain challenges, first found in the Break Item Boxes challenge of the Tokyo Tour's Wendy Cup. Once obtained, Stars can be activated by tapping the screen, making the player temporarily invincible. Additionally, if the player is about to receive a High-End driver from a pipe, a Star appears briefly on-screen.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Yoshi's Safari
In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins stars can be found. They make Mario turn invincible and move faster, much like the other games before, except the stars do not bounce. The music was changed once again. It's a unique song.
Super Stars appear in Yoshi's Safari. They are dropped from Flying ? Blocks or the green type during boss fights only. A Super Star allows Yoshi to defeat any enemies on contact temporarily, similarly to its role in other appearances. Collecting a Super Star earns the player 2,000 bonus points.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
Mario's Time Machine
Stars also appear in the third installment of the Super Mario Land series, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. Here, Wario is able to use the Star for the first time. Besides the theme that plays while invincible, the Star's effects haven't changed much from the previous games. The Star also makes Wario run even faster.
Several Super Stars appear as statues in Bowser's Museum in Mario's Time Machine, and are usable as platforms to reach some doors.

Stars appear in certain Mario Kart games. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Stars are seen with smiling mouths. Stars make the player who uses it invincible, faster, and allows them to cross all types of terrain without losing any speed. However, if the player happens to fall off course, the star's effect wears off right away. An invincible player is also able to knock players with the Mega Mushroom effects in Mario Kart Wii. Additionally, the Star does protect players from incoming Bullet Bills.

In some places, stars can be obtained through special blocks. One is in DK Pass, where there is a super item block on top of a hill. If the player, in any position, touches the item block, the player may receive a star, triple mushrooms, mushrooms, or a single red shell. In Chain Chomp Wheel there is an item block on top of the center of the course with the ramps around. If players can go through the ring and receive an item block there, they may receive a star or a mushroom.
Yoshi's Island series
Super Stars are rare power-ups in the first two installments of the Yoshi's Island series: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (as well as its remake) and Yoshi's Island DS. Super Stars work completely different than before, turning Baby Mario into Superstar Mario and Yoshi into a giant Yoshi's Egg. Super Stars in Yoshi's Island DS can be found in the levels Baby Mario and Baby Peach: Dynamic Duo, Castle of Big Guy the Stilted, Superhard Acrobatics! and Yoshi's Island Easter Eggs.

The Star is also the emblem of the Star Cup in every Mario Kart game to date.
Though Super Stars are not in Yoshi's New Island, a similar item named Yoshi Star appears. Yoshi Stars are featured in two colors, and both turn Yoshi into Super Yoshi. The yellow ones make him invincible and let him run on walls and ceilings, while the red ones let him blast through enemies and walls for a brief time. Both forms can be prolonged by grabbing more Yoshi Stars of the same color.

Since Mario Kart Super Circuit, players can also earn ranks that can be one, two or three stars. The best rank is three stars. Players can also gain an overall star rank; when having earned minimally one star on every cup, the player gains a one-star rank. Minimally two stars on each cup means a two-star rank, and three stars on each cup means an overall rank of three stars, which is the highest.
Mario's FUNdamentals
Super Stars are depicted on dominoes numbered 1 within the Dominoes game of Mario's FUNdamentals.

In Mario Kart Wii, the Sugarscoot has a star emblem on its spare tire on the rear.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Stars are rare items within Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. They can defeat enemies on the overworld and still earn Mario some experience points. The star is also used in the Triple Move Starry Shell Spike in the remake.

In Mario Kart 7 on the Shy Guy Bazaar course, there are Vases. If the racers hit a Vase while driving at high speeds, the Vase will break and Star may pop out and give them invincibility for a short time.
Game & Watch Gallery series
Just like in Game & Watch Gallery, collecting a Super Star is worth five points. In the game's Modern version of Helmet, a Super Star appears if the player collects 50 coins without getting a miss, and obtaining it is worth at least 20 points. In the Modern version of Turtle Bridge in Game & Watch Gallery 3, a Super Star is one of the items Toad must deliver to Princess Peach if he continues delivering a melon without losing a life, and he receives 15 points upon doing so.

Super Stars have made varying appearances in the Mario Golf series. In Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Super Stars are obstacles appearing only on Peach's Castle Grounds, where they also appear as tee markers. In Mario Golf: Advance Tour, Super Stars appear on certain Star Courses, and whenever one is hit, the player becomes "invincible" against whatever their current ball lie is, and the ball acts as if it were on the optimum playing surface. In Mario Golf: World Tour, when Mario or Gold Mario gets a Birdie or better in this game, his post-hole animation involves him grabbing a Star and running while invincible and then striking a pose. Also, when he gets an Eagle in this game, he grabs a star, defeats a few enemies, and jumps. This item is also used as tee markers in the Mario's Star course. ====Mario & Luigi: Dream Team====
Super Stars are part of the Star Rocket attack in the Mad Skillathon game in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. They do not appear until just after the 150th small star. Collecting a Super Star allows Mario and Luigi to speed up and destroy damage balloons temporarily, and Dreamy Mario and his clones become invincible during the chase scenes from a Super Star.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
Only one Super Star appears in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam in the form of a Papercraft item. Before the fight with Papercraft King Boo, the trio upon Papercraft Yoshi can find a floating Super Star and by using its tongue, they can pull it in and use it. Super Stars are collectible items in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. They grant Mario invincibility, allowing him to defeat enemies without battling them, much like in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Super Stars are very uncommon, appearing only in Whammino Mountain, Rustle Burrow and Gauntlet Pond.

Paper Mario: Color Splash
Super Stars retain retain the same role in Paper Mario: Color Splash as previously. They are only found in Kiwano Temple, The Golden Coliseum, and Sacred Forest.

Paper Mario: The Origami King
A Super Star is found after clearing the leaf memory game in Whispering Woods in Paper Mario: The Origami King, and is used to cross some beds of thorns to reach a Hidden Block and Collectible Treasure. Stars only appear in Toy Field and Star Dash in Mario Superstar Baseball. A star can only be obtained by making the ball land on the slot and acquiring an item from the item slot. When a star is received, the star will take 30 coins from all other players and gives the player the 30 coins from each player. In Star Dash, the star may come out along with the coins that come out of the pipe-like mechanism. When the star is received, the player will receive 10 coins. When the player hits another player while the star is in effect, the player will steal 10 coins. The player can defeat Thwomps on the field also. The player must watch out for the Poison Mushrooms that come out. If the player touches a Poison Mushroom while invincible, the player will feel the Poison Mushroom effects and lose the star power up.
Stars appear in Toy Field, where they take 30 coins from each opponent to give to the player, and in Star Dash of Mario Superstar Baseball. Collecting a Star in Star Dash earns the player ten coins, gives them the ability to defeat Thwomps, and steal ten coins from other players on contact, though it does not protect them from Poison Mushrooms.

Mario Super Sluggers
Mario Super Sluggers
Since the item slot was dismissed in the Toy Field of Mario Super Sluggers, it appears in a minigame called Graffiti Runner. In this game, the star is one of the many power-ups found inside treasure chest, in which the player must use the tackle button to open up. If the player acquires the star, they are invincible and impervious to almost all forms of attack, plus can be able to knock anyone else aside. However, the player is not fully invincible and will still get stunned by an earthquake caused by a larger player or a Chain Chomp. It also appeared in the Blooper Baserun minigame and shares the same thing.
Stars are treasure chest power-ups in the Graffiti Runner and Blooper Baserun minigames of Mario Super Sluggers. They grant temporary invincibility and the ability to knock others aside, but it does not protect players from Chain Chomps or a larger player's earthquake. The game's iteration of Toy Field gives stars a different role, where one of the jackpot events is choosing a treasure chest to find a star, and by selecting the correct one, the player receives coins.

Mario & Sonic series
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
Super Stars are featured within both the handheld and console versions of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. For the handheld version, they are items during the Dream Basketball event, where they are named "Starman," and throwing a Powerup Ball with one on into a hoop turns every ball golden. They grant temporary invincibility from all items during the Dream Canoe and Dream Long Jump events, as well as increased speed in the latter. Super Stars are used automatically in Dream Shooting upon hitting an Item Box, giving them unlimited shots temporarily. In every aforementioned event, the user's icon on the upper screen changes color constantly. Super Stars are also in the console variation of Dream Race, where they grant invincibility from all items except for Boos for five seconds.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
Super Stars appear as items in several Dream Events in both the handheld and console versions of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. In the handheld version, Super Stars appear in Ski Cross Racing, Rocket Ski Jumping, Extreme Snowboarding and Fever Hockey, granting invincibility and a boost in speed temporarily, as well as in Ski Shooting, where they allow the player to achieve a combo by shooting targets of any color. The console version includes Super Stars as items that grant invincibility and a temporary speed boost in both the Individual and Team versions of Dream Alpine, the Individual and Team versions of Dream Ski Cross, the Individual and Team versions of Dream Snowboard Cross, Dream Short Track, Dream Bobsleigh, Dream Snowball Fight and the Individual and Team versions of Dream Gliding. Furthermore, the characters chase a star for most of the Mario World routine of Dream Figure Skating, as well as in Dream Ice Hockey, where it grants increased speed and the ability to knock over opponents, in addition to the usual invincibility.

Though stars do not appear as an item obtained in Toy Field, it can be found when the player makes the ball land on the "Jackpot" space. In one of these jackpots, there is an event where the player must choose a treasure chest to find a star. If the player did, they will receive coins.

Mario Sports Mix
Mario Sports Mix
Stars also make an appearance in Mario Sports Mix and in addition to making the character invincible, it has two theme songs. They also increase the speed and accuracy of the ball. In basketball and hockey, players cannot intercept the ball/puck when it is thrown. In volleyball, opposing players who touch the ball will be heavily immobilized for awhile. In dodgeball, opposing players will immediately lose some health when hit, regardless of if the ball touches the ground or not.
Super Stars are rare items in Mario Sports Mix that have their usual invincibility function, in addition to two theme songs and increasing the speed and accuracy of the ball: the ball or puck cannot be intercepted in basketball and hockey, respectively; it immobilizes players on contact in volleyball; and takes away health in dodgeball.

In Mario Party 10, Super Stars appear in the Cheep Cheep Leap minigame, where players have to use them to defeat as many Cheep Cheeps as they can in thirty seconds. In Super Mario Party Jamboree, a Super Star appears in Bowser Kaboom Squad after draining Impostor Bowser's health bar, granting all eight players invincibility to finish off Impostor Bowser for good. In addition, Super Stars are an item in Koopathlon, with their effects depending on the minigame.

Stars in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon are rather rare (only found twice within Treacherous Mansion) and serve a much more different task than the traditional Stars in the Mario series. They seem to be on fire, have a grayish-brown color, are able to be sucked up and thrown out by the Poltergust 5000, and have no face. Stars are used for two things; three stars can be used to complete a constellation, resulting in a diamond being awarded to the player, and in the battle with the Strong Poltergeist; ironically, the Poltergeist uses them as projectiles and they can hurt Luigi rather than give him invincibility.

Other Appearances
The Super Mario Mash-up in Minecraft features a minecraftwiki of a Super Star.

Stars have made very few appearances in games such as the Mario RPG series. Their first appearance as an item was in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, where Mario could occasionally find the rare item and use it to defeat enemies on the overworld (without having to go into battle with them). Doing this would, quite helpfully, still earn Mario Experience Points. Stars, despite being such rare items in the RPGs, are briefly mentioned in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, where they are said to be an ingredient of Invincishrooms, and in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, in which a camera-wielding Lakitu near the Glitz Pit remarks, "Stars make you invincible?".

Starmen appear for the second time in a Mario RPG in Paper Mario: Sticker Star, where they can be found in levels and grant Mario invincibility which lets him defeat enemies without battling them, much like Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
In Monopoly Gamer, the board contains four Super Star spaces. A player landing on one of these spaces can activate their "Super Star Ability" listed on their Character card.

In the Wii U and Nintendo Switch versions of nwiki, the Pop Star character is unlocked by finding and building 5 Super Stars. A balloon shaped like a Super Star also appears in Festival Square.

In nwiki, a Super Star appears as a gem when sieving dirt. It is a very rare gem and is worth 5000 Moolah. When picked up, it plays the invincibility theme from Super Mario Bros. and will keep playing as long as it is held. It is also seen on a face-in-hole board that appears when every gem in the game is found.

Trivia
References
*Super Mario Land, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins are the only games to have a completely different Starman theme. In Super Mario Land, it is the chorus to the famous Can-Can music.

*In the French version, Stars are named "Super Étoile" (meaning Super Star). For unknown reasons, the Super Mario Galaxys Power Stars are named Super Stars in the French version.

*Mario Sports Mix is the only game that has two Starman theme songs; the first is heard when the Star item is in effect during a match; the other is heard when the player clears the Star Road.
*If the player touches another power-up while invincible in Super Mario Galaxy, it flies high into the air, coming back down a minute or less later.
*In Animal Crossing, there is an item called "starman" which plays the star theme from Mario Kart 64 when placed in a room.
*An enemy in the Kirby series is called Starman.

Not to be confused with Power Star, Rainbow Star, or Mega Star.
This article is about the Star that grants users limited invincibility against most obstacles. For other uses of "Star", see Star.
"Starman" redirects here. For the enemy from the MOTHER / EarthBound franchise that appears in the Super Smash Bros. series, see List of Assist Trophy characters § Starman and List of Smash Run enemies § Starman. For the theme associated with the Super Star, see Invincibility BGM.

Super Stars (also written as Superstars),[1][2] originally referred to as Starmen and alternatively referred to as Star Bonuses,[3] Invincible Starmen,[4] Invincibility Stars,[5] Stars,[6][7] or Star-Men,[8] are recurring items in the Super Mario franchise, most notably the Super Mario series and the Mario Kart series. Super Stars are generally depicted as five-pointed stars with beady eyes, usually yellow in color. If the player gets a Star, they will become invincible. The user becomes temporarily invulnerable to all damage, being able to defeat almost any enemy. However, hazards that would be fatal regardless of power-ups (lava, poison, pits, time running out, getting crushed, etc.) will still defeat the user, even with the Super Star. In addition, the splotchy goop in the Bowser's Fury mode in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury will cause the player to lose their invincibility if touched while also taking damage, as if they took damage without the power-up.[9] The projectiles or enemies that come into contact with the user of the Star while it is activated are destroyed, damaged, or knocked off the screen (depending on the type of enemy and what game it is). The Star also increases the speed of the user substantially (again, depending on the game). In most games since Super Mario World, if the player collides with and defeats a sequence of enemies while invincible, they will get an extra life. The point chain is usually 200 - 400 - 800 - 1,000 - 2,000 - 4,000 - 8,000 - 1UP - 1UP - 1UP... As the player continues defeating enemies, they will keep getting extra lives for each additional enemy defeated until the Star's power wears off and they are no longer invulnerable. Touching another Star while already invincible will prolong the effect and allow the player to continue getting more lives.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. / Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[edit]

A Starman from Super Mario Bros.
A Starman's original design for Super Mario Bros.

Starmen are uncommon items which first appear in Super Mario Bros. and return with the same role in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. They are first seen in World 1-1 of the former game.[10] When Mario or Luigi gets a Starman, they become invincible to any enemy or object except pits or time running out, and the invincibility theme plays. The Starman allows for enemies to be destroyed along the way. Invincibility is indicated by Mario's flashing sprites and the Starman theme which replaces the current soundtrack. After several seconds, the effects of the item wear off.

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Starmen return in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic[11] and Super Mario Bros. 2. The player can obtain one by collecting five cherries in a level.[12] Starmen spawn from the bottom of the screen before traveling upward in a zigzag pattern but otherwise work the same as before.

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Starmen in Super Mario Bros. 3 are very similar to their appearance in Super Mario Bros., except they also allow for faster running. If Mario jumps when he is not Small Mario, he does flips in the air. This game also introduces the Continuous Starman[13][14] chain, where certain ? Blocks contain stars instead of coins if the player character is invincible while hitting them. World 7-7 can only be completed while invincible.[15] A Starman is one of the goal icon, and achieving three in a row earns the player extra lives.[16]

Super Mario Land[edit]

Star

Stars return in Super Mario Land, with the same effects as before, although the musical theme is different than before; it is composed of two loops of an excerpt from the "Galop infernal" from Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach, a tune most commonly associated with the can-can.

Super Mario World[edit]

SMW Star.png

Super Stars are items found mostly in Roulette Blocks in Super Mario World. From this appearance onward, defeating enemies in succession results in increasing point values for successive enemies,[17] eventually gaining extra lives after achieving 8,000 points.[18] The Star World theme is also a slowed-down variation of the Super Star theme.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]

Stars return in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. They no longer bounce upon being released from a block,[19] and one can alternatively received from defeating 100 enemies.[citation needed] Unlike Super Mario World, Mario begins receiving extra lives from the fifth enemy defeated onwards. The Super Star theme is completetly different but is not the same as the one in Super Mario Land.[20][19]

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

A Super Star

Super Mario Galaxy / Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Main article: Rainbow Star

Super Stars are replaced by Rainbow Stars in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, having the same function and having the same invincibility theme associated with it.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

Super Stars are more common in Super Mario 3D Land than previous appearances. Aside from their function in the three-dimensional playing field, Super Stars function the same as before, but extra lives can be earned after the fifth enemy onward. As the power-up starts wearing off, the corresponding theme speeds up, similar to the Rainbow Stars in the Super Mario Galaxy games, but speeds up in the second bar rather than the fifth bar like in Super Mario Galaxy, though the E3 2011 demo version had it the same as in the latter.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Super Stars reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2, functioning like in earlier two-dimensional installments. A Super Star can only appear in the item storage by collecting it from the World Star Toad House.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Super Stars return in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and their port, working like they do in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Artwork of a Super Star from Super Mario 3D World.
A Super Star from Super Mario 3D World

Super Stars reappear in Super Mario 3D World and its port. They are mostly based on their appearance in Super Mario 3D Land, since the associated theme plays faster upon reaching the second bar. Like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the effects of a Super Star can be passed on to other players in multiplayer. Unlike before, the chain of points restarts after obtaining an extra life.

In the Bowser's Fury campaign of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Super Stars can be obtained randomly upon collecting 100 coins, like with other power-ups.

Super Mario Maker series[edit]

Super Stars are a placeable course element in Super Mario Maker, its port, and Super Mario Maker 2. They function no differently than in most 2D installments.

Super Mario Run[edit]

35[edit]

Super Stars appeared in Super Mario Bros. 35, working mostly like in Super Mario Bros., though the Item Roulette had a chance of granting the player a Super Star.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

DIC cartoons[edit]

“Starman, star bright! Give me Starman pasta power! Give me pasta might!”
Mario, "Pirates of Koopa"

Starmen also make several appearances throughout the three Super Mario animated cartoon series produced by DIC Entertainment.

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, they do not grant invincibility; they instead can power-up Mario and Luigi into Fire Mario and Fire Luigi, giving them increased strength and the ability to shoot fireballs. The person wielding the Starman, often Mario, usually recites, "Starman, star bright, give me pasta power, give me pasta might!", before powering up. This power lasts until either a fair bit of time elapsed, or they are attacked by an enemy. However, Fire Flowers, along with other powerful artifacts such as magic doodads, can also be used in lieu of Starmen in order to power-up. In "Toad Warriors", Toad manages to transform into the Toad Warrior by using a Starman, although in the next episode, "The Fire of Hercufleas", he transforms into Super Toad by using a Fire Flower.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Stars appear in all Mario Kart games, serving as a rare item that only low-ranking drivers can get. Stars make the player who uses it invincible to all attacks and able to knock over items, course obstacles and other drivers, which in some games makes the player lose their current items. The player receives a speed boost increasing their average speed by 1/3 and is able to cross off-road terrain without losing any speed (Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart: Super Circuit are exceptions, as the item doubles their speed in those games). The invincibility lasts for different time periods depending on the game: 6.13 seconds for Super Mario Kart, 10.13 seconds for Mario Kart 64, 6.3 seconds for Mario Kart: Super Circuit, 7.6 seconds for Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, 7.46 seconds for Mario Kart DS, 7.42 seconds for Mario Kart Wii, 7.46 seconds for Mario Kart 7, and 7.54 seconds for Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.[21]

Superstar from Mario Kart Arcade GP DX
A Star in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX

Yoshi's Safari[edit]

Super Stars appear in Yoshi's Safari. They are dropped from Flying ? Blocks or the green type during boss fights only. A Super Star allows Yoshi to defeat any enemies on contact temporarily, similarly to its role in other appearances. Collecting a Super Star earns the player 2,000 bonus points.

Mario's Time Machine[edit]

Several Super Stars appear as statues in Bowser's Museum in Mario's Time Machine, and are usable as platforms to reach some doors.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3[edit]

Stars appear in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. It is functionally identical to those used in the Super Mario series but has a different invincibility theme, following the same vein as the Super Mario Land games.

Yoshi's Island series[edit]

Super Star.PNG

Mario's FUNdamentals[edit]

Super Stars are depicted on dominoes numbered 1 within the Dominoes game of Mario's FUNdamentals.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]

Stars are rare items within Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. They can defeat enemies on the overworld and still earn Mario some experience points. The star is also used in the Triple Move Starry Shell Spike in the remake.

Game & Watch Gallery series[edit]

Super Stars appear in some of the Modern remakes of Game & Watch games included in the Game & Watch Gallery series. In the Modern version of Fire in Game & Watch Gallery, a Super Star may emerge from a Yoshi Egg within the burning Mushroom Castle, being worth five points when collected. In Game & Watch Gallery 2's Modern version of Parachute, a Super Star appears from one of the three Yoshi Eggs that come from the flying ship every 100 points.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

SmashWiki article: Super Star

A Super Star in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Stars appear in every game of the Super Smash Bros. series. If players touch a Star, they will become invincible, allowing them to attack foes, without worrying about damage. However, unlike with the actual Super Mario games, players will not be able to hurt their opponents just by touching them. In the first two Super Smash Bros. games, the Super Star has a completely unique arrangement of its theme played, though from Super Smash Bros. Brawl onwards, the item uses its theme from Super Mario Bros. instead.

A Star also appears as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as well as an Ace-class support spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate granting the fighter temporary invincibility if they land the first attack in battle.

Mario Tennis series[edit]

Stars appear in the Bowser Stage from Mario Tennis. They are also the Star Cup and Final Cup emblem in Mario Power Tennis and Mario Tennis Open, respectively. Mario Tennis Open features a usable tennis racket, uniform, wrist bands, and shoes themed after Stars for Miis to use.

Mario Bros. (Game Boy Advance)[edit]

Super Stars can hatch from Eggs during only the Mario Bros. Battle 2-player mode of the Mario Bros. remake for the Game Boy Advance.

Nintendo Puzzle Collection[edit]

Super Stars are depicted on flags held by Goomba and Koopa Troopa audience members at the start of a Versus Mode match in Nintendo Puzzle Collection version of Yoshi no Cookie.

Mario Golf series[edit]

Mario launches Super Star Strike!”
Toad, Mario Golf: Super Rush

A clothing set, golf ball, and set of golf clubs are designed based on the item, and are available for Miis to use. In Mario Golf: Super Rush, Mario uses the Super Star to transform into Rainbow Mario during his special shot, the Super Star Strike. Additionally, Super Stars are used during the Super Star Rush event in the Battle Golf mode.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

Super Stars are briefly mentioned in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, where they are said to be an ingredient of Invincishrooms.[22]

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

The Super Star is featured as the Star Rank within Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake, retaining this purpose in all later installment. For one of his attacks, Bowser Memory M uses a pixelated Super Star, functioning like they do in 2D games of the Super Mario series.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]

Super Stars are part of the Star Rocket attack in the Mad Skillathon game in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. They do not appear until just after the 150th small star. Collecting a Super Star allows Mario and Luigi to speed up and destroy damage balloons temporarily, and Dreamy Mario and his clones become invincible during the chase scenes from a Super Star.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

Only one Super Star appears in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam in the form of a Papercraft item. Before the fight with Papercraft King Boo, the trio upon Papercraft Yoshi can find a floating Super Star and by using its tongue, they can pull it in and use it. While under the effects of the Super Star, Papercraft Yoshi can defeat enemies instantly, but it automatically wears off after all nearby Papercraft Goombas are defeated. The New Super Mario Bros. Wii version of the invincibility theme plays while in use. The Super Star does not reappear in the Battle Ring version of the fight.

Paper Mario series[edit]

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

Super Stars are briefly referenced by a camera-wielding Lakitu near the Glitz Pit in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.[23] From this game onward, one is displayed at the bottom right of a dialogue box, indicating that a button has to be pressed to continue.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]

Screenshot of a Super Star in Whammino Mountain, from Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
A Super Star in Whammino Mountain, from Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Super Stars are collectible items in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. They grant Mario invincibility, allowing him to defeat enemies without battling them, much like in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Super Stars are very uncommon, appearing only in Whammino Mountain, Rustle Burrow and Gauntlet Pond.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]

Super Stars retain retain the same role in Paper Mario: Color Splash as previously. They are only found in Kiwano Temple, The Golden Coliseum, and Sacred Forest.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]

A Super Star is found after clearing the leaf memory game in Whispering Woods in Paper Mario: The Origami King, and is used to cross some beds of thorns to reach a Hidden Block and Collectible Treasure. At Picnic Road, a Super Star is a possible reward of great fortune received from the fortune Toad; at Overlook Mountain, where it is used to destroy the Thwomps; and in King Shroomses's tomb in the Temple of Shrooms, where it is used to defeat the Scuttlebugs and Co Gasagoso.

Mario Pinball Land[edit]

Invincibility Stars can be obtained either from purchasing them at Toad's tent, obtaining them from certain ? Blocks, or receiving them from a roulette after obtaining a question mark in Mario Pinball Land. It is possible for the effect of the Invincibility Star to continue over into the next level.

Mario Baseball series[edit]

Mario Superstar Baseball[edit]

Stars appear in Toy Field, where they take 30 coins from each opponent to give to the player, and in Star Dash of Mario Superstar Baseball. Collecting a Star in Star Dash earns the player ten coins, gives them the ability to defeat Thwomps, and steal ten coins from other players on contact, though it does not protect them from Poison Mushrooms.

Mario Super Sluggers[edit]

Stars are treasure chest power-ups in the Graffiti Runner and Blooper Baserun minigames of Mario Super Sluggers. They grant temporary invincibility and the ability to knock others aside, but it does not protect players from Chain Chomps or a larger player's earthquake. The game's iteration of Toy Field gives stars a different role, where one of the jackpot events is choosing a treasure chest to find a star, and by selecting the correct one, the player receives coins.

Mario & Sonic series[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[edit]

Super Stars appear only during the 100m Plus and Boxing Plus events in the handheld version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, granting the players a speed boost for the remainder of the former event and providing invincibility in the latter event, respectively.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[edit]

Super Stars appear during Dream Racing in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, not only granting temporary invincibility but also knocking other players aside on contact.

Mario Sports Mix[edit]

Super Stars are rare items in Mario Sports Mix that have their usual invincibility function, in addition to two theme songs and increasing the speed and accuracy of the ball: the ball or puck cannot be intercepted in basketball and hockey, respectively; it immobilizes players on contact in volleyball; and takes away health in dodgeball.

Mario Party series[edit]

Super Stars appear infrequently in the Mario Party series. They first appear in Mario Party: Island Tour, as usable items in Perilous Palace Path, and using one doubles the total number of spaces the player gets to move with the Dice Block.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]

In Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition Super Stars appear as the symbol for Light Orbs. They are also used as Skill Items. They raise the Skill levels of teammates whose Skill levels are under level 4 such as both forms of Peach, Bob-ombs, and all types/forms of Lakitus and Boos. Super Stars can be obtained by opening up ? Blocks; winning them from the Lucky ? Blocks game at Toad Houses; or from defeating Lakitus or Bob-ombs with a 10+ Combo attack.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit]

Super Stars are retained during Mario's exact golf post-hole animations from Mario Golf: World Tour, and during Metal Mario's animations.

Luigi's Mansion 3[edit]

A Super Star is featured within some rooms of ScareScraper mode in Luigi's Mansion 3. They give temporary invincibility, faster movement, and the ability to defeat ghosts instantly. Stars are sometimes on the pool in the Coin Floating minigame, granting temporary invincibility and the ability to pop the other players' floaties.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

“Bowser has found the Super Star and is headed toward our kingdom. Its power will make him invincible!”
Toad General, The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Bowser stealing the Penguins' Star
Bowser with the Star in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a Super Star contained in a ? Block is guarded by Penguins in their ice castle, only to have their castle destroyed and their Super Star stolen by Bowser after he and his minions attack their kingdom. Serving as a MacGuffin similar to the Power Stars, while functioning like the power-up, Bowser plots to use the Star to take over the world and/or propose to Peach. By the end of the movie, Mario and Luigi use it to become invincible and defeat Bowser and his forces.

In Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, the Super Star (referred to as the Starman in the former three) appears as a furniture item. When interacted with, the invincibility theme plays and, in the original Animal Crossing, also creating a flashing effect on the player in the first Animal Crossing only.

In Punch-Out!! for the Wii, King Hippo wears underpants with a Super Star pattern.

The Super Mario Mash-up in Minecraft features a painting of a Super Star.

In Monopoly Gamer, the board contains four Super Star spaces. A player landing on one of these spaces can activate their "Super Star Ability" listed on their Character card.

In the Wii U and Nintendo Switch versions of LEGO City Undercover, the Pop Star character is unlocked by finding and building 5 Super Stars. A balloon shaped like a Super Star also appears in Festival Square.

In Okaeri! Chibi-Robo! Happy Richie Ōsōji!, a Super Star appears as a gem when sieving dirt. It is a very rare gem and is worth 5000 Moolah. When picked up, it plays the invincibility theme from Super Mario Bros. and will keep playing as long as it is held. It is also seen on a face-in-hole board that appears when every gem in the game is found.

This item makes you invulnerable to all attacks for a short period of time. The Starman bounces around and eventually tumbles out of the stage, but all you need to do is touch it to power up. It possessed similar powers in Super Mario Bros., except you could also harm enemies just by touching them while under its influence.

You may recognize these star-shaped items as they bounce across the stage. Picking one up will grant you a short period of invincibility. You can't wipe out enemies just by walking into them—like in Mario games—but you can still attack without fear. Your foes will be running scared! (American English)
You'll see one of these little stars bouncing along the stage from time to time. Touch it to become invincible! (Well, for a while, at least.) Unfortunately, they don't work exactly the same way as they do in the Mario series, so you won't damage anyone just by walking into them – you'll still need to put some effort in. (British English)
