Midair Stall
The Midair Stall is a move in Super Mario Run. In this game, the player character moves forward automatically. The Midair Stall counteracts this by allowing the player to slow down in the air. To perform it, swipe left on the screen and continue to keep the finger in place. When held, the Midair Stall makes the player come to a stop then drift very slowly backward. The Midair Stall ends when the screen is released, when the player slides to the right of the screen, or when the character lands. It does not end after stomping an enemy. If the player is moving to the left for any reason, as Super Mario Run occasionally allows, the swipe has to be done to the right instead for the same effect.
The Midair Stall is completely optional in Super Mario Run. Its use cases are extremely limited. One possible case, slowing down to avoid hazards, is often filled by Pause Blocks. However, the option to move in nonstandard ways, such as to avoid jumping over ? Blocks or land below a bridge when the arc of a jump would end on top of the bridge, opens up some otherwise impossible routing.
The Midair Stall can be combined with other aerial moves that activate when the screen is tapped. When the Midair Stall is used with a Yoshi's Flutter Jump, it can prevent a Yoshi from Flutter Jumping underneath their target, aim more directly upward, or move a short distance backward. When the Midair Stall is used with Peach's Floaty Jump, she moves backward faster than the other characters and thus can move backward across distances that other characters cannot. Since the Midair Stall can be toggled on and off, switching into and out of the Midair Stall as Peach can be used to move in a wavy pattern or staircase fashion downward.
The Midair Stall cannot change the trajectory of a character being fired out of a cannon until very late in the animation.
Note that the Midair Stall is less of a state in itself and more of a way to adjust the jumping and falling states. Notably, it can be used even in cases where all other input is locked, such as when Edge Climbing off of a floating block as Toad. Technically speaking, the Midair Stall exists in every platforming game where the player has control over their aerial movement, as they can always stop giving directional input while in the air.
