A Bonus Coin[1] is a special and rare coin that appears in Super Mario World. It is a normal yellow coin with a slightly rounder shape and a smiley face on it. Bonus Coins are dropped by Yoshi Clouds.

History[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

A Bonus Coin being dropped

In Super Mario World and its reissue, a Yoshi Cloud drops ten Bonus Coins, one at a time, after which it flies away. If Mario or Luigi manages to collect all ten coins before they faze through the ground after bouncing once on it, the Yoshi Cloud will reward him with a 1-Up Mushroom.

If Mario or Luigi abandons Yoshi and flies one screen above the Yoshi Cloud, a glitch will cause the Bonus Coins to appear as if they were doubled.[2]

A Bonus Coin in the Beta version

In an early version of Super Mario World, the Bonus Coins were originally designed with a star on each. This appearance would later be used for the coins in Super Mario 64.

Super Mario (Kodansha manga)[edit]

In Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World 2, Yoshi shows off his ability to lay different eggs based on the berries he eats. When he creates a Yoshi Cloud, Mario and Luigi start collecting the Bonus Coin, obtaining a 1-Up Mushroom.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

In chapter 8 of volume 2 in Super Mario-kun, while fighting a Jumping Pumpkin Plant, Mario falls on Yoshi, making him pop out an egg that releases a Yoshi Cloud. Mario jumps on it and eats the Bonus Coins, becoming the big-headed Nikoniko Mario, scaring off the enemy.
