Giant sunflowers,[1] also referred to simply as sunflowers[2] or Flowers,[3] are ascendable platforming objects in the Yoshi franchise. They rapidly mature from seeds that fall out of struck Winged Clouds, similar to the vines that grow out of struck blocks in the Super Mario series. Giant sunflowers support leafy platforms that can be be jumped on to reach otherwise inaccessible parts of a level. The height of the flower varies dependening on the level.

History[edit]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

Giant sunflowers, referred to as beanstalks,[4] are introduced in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. When fully grown, the stalk can support as many as six leafy platforms and supports a cheery, smiling flowerhead with yellow pedals. A beanstalk appears as early as Make Eggs, Throw Eggs, where it is necessary to reach one of the level's Special Flowers. In Shy-Guys On Stilts, one is necessary to exit the cave. In the forested level Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy, a sunflower brings Yoshi to a series of cloud platforms with Red Coins. Beanstalks subsequently appear in The Baseball Boys, Watch Out For Lakitu, The Cave Of Harry Hedgehog, and Monkeys' Favorite Lake. The are unchanged in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3.

Yoshi's Island DS[edit]

In Yoshi's Island DS, giant sunflowers have paler stems and leaves, and a slightly different expression on their flowerheads. They otherwise are intisguishable from their previous appearance in the first Yoshi's Island in appearance and function. In the level Ba-dum BUM!, a Winged Cloud drops a sunflower seed when struck before it rapidly matures, like in the first game. In Hit the M Blocks!, seeds instead fall out of struck M Blocks and this reflects how sunflowers appear throughout the rest of the game, namely in Underground Mysteries, Yikes! Boiling Hot!, and Slip Slidin' Away.

Giant sunflowers appear in the introductory course Yarn Yoshi Takes Shape!, where they materialize in a wide pit after a corresponding Winged Cloud is struck. It has only three leaves, but each one is broader than the last. The first sunflower only has three leaves, but the bottommost one is the most broad. There are only three giant sunflowers in this course, each one a different color. The first one has a pastel yellow face and pink pedals. The second has an orange face with yellow pedals, emulating their colors in the first two Yoshi's Island games. The final one has a yellow face and red pedals, and is the tallest of the three. The course's final Smiley Flower is positioned in front of its flowerhead. Collecting all five Wonder Wools in this level unlocks Flower Yoshi, whose design invokes the giant sunflowers of the level. These are the only giant sunflower in Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World.
