"Athletic BGM,"[1] also known as the "Athletic Theme,"[2] is a musical theme composed for Super Mario World by Koji Kondo. It is an upbeat ragtime arrangement of the Super Mario World "Ground Theme."

Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario World[edit]
While Mario is riding a Yoshi in Super Mario World, bongo percussion is added to the instrumentation of "Athletic BGM". This version is titled "Yoshi Athletic BGM" in the Nintendo Music app.

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]
An arrangement of "Athletic BGM" can be heard in Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario World, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2. This version is much more compressed than the original version and uses different, lower-quality synthetic instruments. Like the Super Mario World original, additional percussion is added to the instrumentation when the player rides a Yoshi.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the theme heard in Hightail Falls Galaxy and the "Purple Coin Beach Dash" mission in Starshine Beach Galaxy, titled 「ダッシュヨッシー」 (Dasshu Yosshī, "Dash Yoshi") in the game's official soundtrack and arranged by Mahito Yokota,[3] is an arrangement of "Athletic BGM". The tempo increases and a violin run is added when Yoshi uses a Dash Pepper.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
In Super Mario Maker 2, "Athletic BGM" is given an original, more ambient arrangement for editing Sky-themed courses in the Course Maker, using eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix.
The game also features a music box version of "Athletic BGM" that plays during the nighttime version of sky-themed levels in the Super Mario World style.

An arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays while playing the main game of Mario Roulette, an arcade medal game with graphics based heavily on Super Mario World and the gameplay of its bonus game.
Super Mario Bros. Mushroom World[edit]
An arrangement of "Athletic BGM" is one of the themes that can play while playing the pinball arcade game Super Mario Bros. Mushroom World.
Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Melee includes a bluegrass arrangement of "Athletic BGM" played on banjo with upright bass and bongo accompaniment, titled "Yoshi's Island" and arranged by HAL Laboratory composer Hirokazu Ando. It is the default music for the Yoshi's Island stage.
The arrangement returns in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, now titled "Yoshi's Island (Melee)", where it can be played on the Yoshi's Island stage, in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, where it can be played on the Yoshi's Island stage and the Super Mario Maker stage, and in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, now titled "Athletic Theme - Super Mario World", where it can be played on any Super Smash Bros.-series and Yoshi-series stage. In all reappearances except Brawl, it is categorized as a Yoshi-series track, rather than a Super Mario-series track.
Additionally, a live fiddle arrangement of "Athletic BGM" with orchestral accompaniment is included in the track "Smash Bros. Great Medley" in the Super Smash Bros. Melee: Smashing...Live! album.

Mario Sports Mix[edit]
In Mario Sports Mix, three arrangements of "Athletic BGM", titled "Mario Athletic", "Punk Athletic" and "Island Athletic", are available as songs in Harmony Hustle.
Nintendo Land[edit]
In Nintendo Land, an arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays on the Mud River Run stage in Mario Chase. When 60 seconds remain, the theme speeds up significantly, and when 30 seconds remain, the theme speeds up even more and is transposed to a higher key.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]
In Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, a tropical arrangement of "Athletic BGM" plays during the five Sillyfish Chuck Challenges.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an arrangement of "Athletic BGM" is incorporated in "Fighting Tooth and Veil" after Mario transforms into Tanooki Mario.
