Egg Pawns are a crossover species from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and one of Dr. Eggman's many creations. Egg Pawns in the Super Mario franchise appear only in the Mario & Sonic series, beginning with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Egg Pawns usually appear within Dream Events, but they do appear as extra team members in certain events that require larger team sizes.
History[edit]
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games[edit]
Egg Pawns are obstacles in Dream Race in the the Wii version.[1] A pair of them appear as obstacles on the track moving at a slow speed. If a player character crashes into an Egg Pawn, it explodes, stunning the character temporarily,[2] but Egg Pawns do respawn shortly afterward.
Egg Pawns are targets featured in Dream Shooting in the Nintendo DS version, in addition to a variety with a shield requiring multiple shots to destroy. The final boss is a giant Egg Pawn with a shield, and it requires several hits to destroy, and the last player to destroy it earns a large point bonus.[3] Egg Pawns are also enemies to hit in Shoot! and a character to sort in Conveyor Belt.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]
In the Wii version, Egg Pawns appear as basic obstacles in both the Individual and Team versions of Dream Alpine and the Individual and Team versions of Dream Snowboard Cross, where they cause the player to fall over and lose speed when hit. The Egg Pawns can be destroyed if they hit by a character under the effects of the Super Star. Egg Pawns are featured in the Sonic World version of Dream Figure Skating, where the characters defeat them by jumping from Springs.[4]
In the Nintendo DS version, Egg Pawns appear in Extreme Snowboarding, serving the same purpose as in the Wii version.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[edit]
Egg Pawns sometimes spawn in Dream Fencing in the Wii version. If a character hits an Egg Pawn, they take damage,[5] but a single thrust destroys it.[6] There is an unlockable Mii outfit based on an Egg Pawn.
Egg Pawns appear in the Nintendo 3DS version, throwing balls at the goal being defended by the player in Handball and serving as a defender and a goalie each in Football each. In the game's Story Mode, an Egg Pawn initially appears with an Egg Flapper to attack Omochao and a Chao in Junior, Super Hero?,[7] but are defeated by Bowser Jr. A badge of an Egg Pawn can also be obtained from the badge machine.
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[edit]
An Egg Pawn appears only in the form of an unlockable Mii outfit in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[edit]
In the Wii U version, different colors of Egg Pawns appear as a selectable set of three extra team mates for Rugby Sevens and Duel Rugby Sevens, and as a selectable goalie for Football and Duel Football. The Egg Pawn Mii outfit returns but has to now be collected in two separate head and body parts.
In the Nintendo 3DS version Egg Pawns appear as the teammates for Jet and Shadow in Football and Football Plus, with Shadow also having an armored variety. An Egg Pawn is also one of the goalies. An Egg Pawn also operates the mechanical hurdles in 110m Hurdles Plus.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[edit]
Egg Pawns serve as goalies in Football and extra teammates in Rugby Sevens in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, but only if the team's captain is from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Egg Pawns are colored either red or blue, depending on which team they are on. Egg Pawns are also enemies in several of the story mode minigames.
