Fever Hockey is a Dream Ice Hockey Dream Event that appears in the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. The objective of the event is to score more points than the opponents, with the event taking place on Skyscraper Rink.

Gameplay[edit]

In this event, the player plays two matches, a qualifying match against a random opponent, and then either a final match if they beat the opponent against the other winners or a third place match against the other losers. Each match consists of two halves of a pre-set length. The player selects two characters for this event, and also has a Shy Guy matching their team's color as the goalie. To start each match, the player must touch the Touch Screen as "Start!" appears onscreen to attempt to gain control of the puck, which can be done by touching before the opponent. If the player manages to gain the puck, the player can move their character with the puck by touching and holding in a direction on the Touch Screen, and can pass to the other character by tapping on them. The more times the characters pass the puck between each other without scoring, the more combo marks they will gain, represented onscreen by musical notes. The player can gain up to a maximum combo of four, and the higher their combo the more chance one of their shots has to enter the goal. To make a shot, the player can either slide towards the goal to perform a simple shot, or slide towards their own before sliding towards the other goal to perform a more powerful analogue shot that is harder to block. If the shot is made with a maximum combo, the character will instead perform a special shot, which is harder again to block, as each character's shot has a different effect and trajectory. When the other team gains possession of the puck, the player can attempt to regain it by sliding into the other characters or by performing a body check by sliding in the direction of their choice. The player can change the character that they control by tapping on the other character to change, and can also attempt to block shots by tapping on the goalie when the puck approaches them. The player can block both regular and special shots, however special shots will cause the goalie to fall over and be temporarily unable to defend the goal. The rink itself gains a few obstacles, including Springs, which bounce the puck off at high speeds, and holes that teleport the puck to the corresponding hole on the other side of the rink. The rink also features a bonus gate, which charges up over time and eventually opens, allowing characters to shoot the puck into it. This will stat a roulette, which can potentially change the value of the puck when a goal is scored from the default 10 points to either 30 or 50, and also places one of four random items onto the rink:

  • Bomb: Drops several Bombs onto the rink that slowly slide around and explode upon impact or after a short amount of time, stunning any characters caught in the explosion. Can be defended against with a Super Star.
  • Super Star: Grants the player a small speed boost and invincibility from other items for a short amount of time.
  • Chaos Emerald: Drops tokens on the rink which cause the other team to be struck by lightning when collected, causing them to lose speed.
  • High Speed Shoes: Grants the player a large speed boost for a short amount of time.

At the end of the first half, the match will stop and the second half will start with another puck toss. After each half, the player is shown the number of points each team has and the number of shots they made at the goal. The team with the most points at the end of both halves wins the match.

In this event, the player can set the game speed to normal, fast or slow, and the length of each half to 5:00, 10:00 and 15:00.
