[[Yoshi]] utilizes several abilities with eggs, namely [[Egg Throw|throwing them as projectiles]]. A Yoshi's Egg is an [[emblem]] associated with [[Yoshi (species)|Yoshi]]s in general. Barring [[Chef|one minor instance]], games never depict a Yoshi hatching from an egg that is shown to be laid by another one. The standard design of a Yoshi's Egg is white with green dots, but they can appear in a variety of colors, depending on either the Yoshi that laid the egg or the egg's contents or properties. There are gigantic variations known as [[Giant Egg]]s.

Though the basic white egg with green dots is the most common design throughout the ''Super Mario'' franchise, the body and dots can be a variety of colors, depending on either the Yoshi that laid the egg or the egg's contents or properties. The eggs themselves can vary in size from smaller than a Yoshi to bigger than even [[Bowser]].
A Yoshi's Egg is often used as [[Yoshi]]'s [[emblem]] in various games, and Yoshi has various abilities that make use of the eggs.

Yoshi Eggs first appear in ''[[Super Mario World]]''; when [[Mario]] or [[Luigi]] finds one, a [[Yoshi]] hatches from it, allowing Mario and Luigi to ride it. If Mario or Luigi finds another egg while a Yoshi is nearby, a [[1-Up Mushroom]] will emerge instead. According to the story, Bowser trapped all the Yoshis in eggs.

Mario or Luigi rescues an egg from each [[Castle#Super Mario World|Castle]] he clears, but these eggs do not hatch until the end of the game. These eggs are all yellow-spotted in the original game, but the [[Baby Yoshi]]s that hatch during the ending cutscenes are various colors; in the [[Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2|Game Boy Advance version]], the spots on the eggs now match the color of the Yoshis that hatch from them.
There are also multicolored eggs that appear outside item boxes in the [[Star World]] levels. Approaching one of these will cause it to hatch into a baby Yoshi, with its color matching the color of the egg. In ''Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2'', the Bros. can find an egg of any color in a [[? Block]] after finding the corresponding Yoshi in [[Star World]] and feeding it enough enemies or objects to grow it to maturity, though which egg will spawn is dependent on the Bros.' current form. The possible outcomes are as follows; forms written in italics will always spawn that particular Yoshi, assuming it has already been found and fed in Star World, whereas forms not written in italics will randomly spawn a Yoshi among those which have already been unlocked:

In addition, Yoshis can lay eggs after eating [[fruit (Yoshi food)|berries]]. A [[Super Mushroom]] will hatch from the egg if ten red berries are eaten. In the GBA port, the type of power-up is dependent on the Yoshi's color: green eggs hatch out a Super Mushroom, red eggs hatch out a [[Fire Flower]], blue eggs hatch out a [[Cape Feather]], and yellow eggs hatch out a [[Super Star|Starman]]. If two pink berries are eaten, the egg will hatch a [[Yoshi Cloud]]. When the egg is expelled, it acts as a projectile. It can defeat enemies or activate blocks until it hatches.

Yoshi Eggs also appear in the challenge mode of ''[[Super Mario Bros. Deluxe]]'', where only one can be found per level, and can only be collected from a hidden block within each level; said hidden block is often near an object that did not appear in the original level. Collecting the egg earns the player 2,000 points and places an egg icon next to the Red Coins indicator; and the egg will hatch into a Yoshi upon clearing the level. If the player collects all the eggs from each level, they will unlock a picture in the Album.

Yoshi Eggs are collectable in '''Yoshi Challenge''', a mode available after completing the main game in ''[[Super Mario Advance]]''. Every level has two Yoshi Eggs, located in place of the [[Mushroom]]s in [[Subspace]]. If the player loses a life, they have to collect the eggs in the level again. Once every Yoshi Egg is found in a world, a Yoshi hatches from each of them.<ref>{{cite|url=youtu.be/Y6LelqKQyXI?feature=shared&t=6497|title=<nowiki> [Longplay]</nowiki> GBA - Super Mario Advance <nowiki>[100%]</nowiki> (HD, 60FPS)|timestamp:1:48:17|publisher=YouTube|language=en|author=xRavenXP|date=September 5, 2019}}</ref>
Yoshi Eggs are items in ''[[Super Mario Advance]]''. They can be collected in '''Yoshi Challenge''', available after completing the game. Two Yoshi Eggs per level can be found in [[Subspace]], in the places where Mushrooms would normally be found. Thus, only three hearts is the maximum capacity during the Yoshi Challenge. The player also must successfully beat all the levels without losing lives. Dying will cause the player to lose the eggs they collected for that level, and they have to collect the eggs again. The Yoshi Eggs will hatch once all of them have been found for a world.

Yoshi eggs appear in ''[[Super Mario Sunshine]]'', containing Yoshis within, and are available after the player completes the episode [[The Wilted Sunflowers]] in [[Pinna Park]]. After the episode is cleared [[Shadow Mario]] will appear in front of the [[Grand Pianta Statue]] carrying a Yoshi egg, and must be defeated by spraying him with [[F.L.U.D.D.|FLUDD]]. After this encounter, a Yoshi egg will be available on a rooftop next to the western bell tower any time Mario returns to [[Delfino Plaza]], and eggs will also appear in several missions within each of the levels. Each egg is accompanied by a thought bubble with an image of a fruit; Mario must present them the fruit shown to make them hatch. The type of fruit will determine the color of the Yoshi that emerges, and he can change colors by eating other fruits; if Yoshi is lost, he will reappear inside the egg in its original location.

Yoshi's Eggs appear in ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]'' as projectiles for Yoshi. They can be acquired by eating enemies and swallowing them to turn into eggs. Unlike in ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'', Yoshi can carry only one egg at a time and must throw the egg in order to eat any other enemies. Thrown eggs home in on enemies onscreen and can bounce off enemies to hit another. If Yoshi swallows a wooden [[crate]], the egg takes the form of a cube and slides across the ground in a similar manner when thrown. A Yoshi's Egg automatically disappears if Yoshi collects a [[Power Flower (Super Mario 64 DS)|Power Flower]] or puts on a cap; however, the egg is not affected if Yoshi grabs a [[Super Mushroom]], but the egg cannot be thrown as Yoshi can only punch until the effects of the [[Mega Mario|Mega form]] wear off.

Yoshi's Egg symbols also appear in two of Luigi's minigames, [[Mario Slot]] and [[Super Mario Slot]]. Getting three Yoshi's Eggs in a row earns the player five coins.

Yoshi eggs return in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]'', hatching a Yoshi when a player hits a [[? Block]] or [[Brick Block]] containing one or more eggs based on the players onscreen. They behave similarly to the eggs in ''Super Mario World'', in which Yoshi also hatches from an egg spawned from a certain block. If the player's Yoshi eats five [[fruit (Yoshi food)|fruits]] or a [[Pokey]] during a vocal "[[paah]]" in the music, it will lay an egg containing a power-up. The game introduces a golden variation with white spots that hatches [[Glowing Baby Yoshi]]s, except only one appears from certain ? Yoshi eggs reappear in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]'', ''[[New Super Luigi U]]'', and their [[New Super Mario Bros. Some levels feature [[Hidden Block]]s containing a green Yoshi egg. There are also large, bright golden Yoshi eggs with white spots that hatch [[Glowing Baby Yoshi]]s, though only one appears from a single [[? Green Yoshi eggs appear in the levels [[Yoshi Hill]], [[Perilous Pokey Cave]], [[Above the Cheep Cheep Seas]], [[Prickly Goombas!]], [[Fuzzy Clifftop]], and [[Seesaw Shrooms]], while Glowing Baby Yoshi eggs appear in the levels [[Fire Snake Cavern]] and [[Which-Way Labyrinth]].

Green Yoshi Eggs appear in levels [[Rolling Yoshi Hills]], [[Underground Grrrols]], [[Beanstalk Jungle]], [[Fire and Ice]], and [[Above the Bouncy Clouds]], while Glowing Baby Yoshi eggs only appear in the level [[Piranhas in the Dark]].

Yoshi's Eggs reappear in ''[[Super Mario Maker]]'' and ''[[Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS]]'', enabling players to use [[Yoshi]]. They can only be used in the ''[[Super Mario World]]'' and ''[[New Super Mario Bros. If an egg (or Yoshi) is crushed, such as from a [[Thwomp]] or a falling [[Bill Blaster]], it will disappear. When a Super Mushroom is dragged onto a Yoshi's Egg, it becomes a big Yoshi's Egg which hatches into two Yoshis at once that will run like they were hit by an enemy. Although more than one Yoshi's Egg can be placed, only two can actually hatch, while the others disappear upon hatching. A Yoshi's Egg on a track does not hatch until the player touches it, knocking it off of the track. A Yoshi's Egg in a [[Koopa Clown Car]] also does not hatch until it is removed from it.

Top and bottom halves of a Yoshi's egg appear on the playing field throughout [[Yoshi (game)|''Yoshi'']]. Stacking the two halves together will hatch a Yoshi, earning 50 points for the player, as well as an additional 50 points for each enemy plowed through as the upper half travels down to meet the bottom half. If a top half of the egg lands without its matching bottom half below, it disappears. A bottom half of an egg can land above another, making the lower egg half unusable. The type of Yoshi that hatches from the egg half depends on how many enemies were caught between the two pieces:
In the puzzle game [[Yoshi (game)|''Yoshi'']], top and bottom halves of a Yoshi's egg appear on several occasions during gameplay. Stacking the two halves together will hatch a [[Baby Yoshi]], earning 50 points for the player. If a top half of the egg is by itself on the gameplay board, it will dissipate. But if a bottom piece is by itself, it will remain until an upper piece is found, or another falls on top of it. If other objects are stacked on top of the egg piece and a top piece falls on top of the pile, it will plow through the entire stack until it reaches its other half. This results in a different kind of Yoshi hatching from the egg, depending on how many enemies were caught between the two pieces. The kinds of Yoshis which can be hatched is seen below.

In ''[[Mario Kart: Double Dash!!]]'', the Yoshi's Egg is a [[Special Item (Mario Kart series)|special item]], exclusive to [[Yoshi]], while it can also be used by [[Petey Piranha]] and [[King Boo]], since they can use any special item. When thrown, the Yoshi's Egg will home on the next place racer. If a player uses it while first, the egg will just follow down the track and break. Unlike the Red Shell, there is a certain amount of distance an egg needs before it cracks, and the red shell is continuous until it either goes off the course, goes into a wall, or hits the player. When it breaks, three random items will get thrown out, which can be [[Green Shell]]s, [[Mushroom]]s, [[Banana]]s, [[Super Star|Star]]s, or [[Bob-omb]]s.

Yoshis can lay eggs by swallowing enemies. Yoshis can also obtain these eggs by hitting an [[Egg Block]] that contains an unlimited supply of eggs and from [[Egg Plant]]s that spit out eggs. Eggs can also fall into [[tulip]]s in this game, resulting in the tulip spitting out [[Star (Yoshi's Island series)|Star]]s. Yoshi eggs are laid automatically in ''[[Yoshi's Story]]'' when an enemy is eaten, but the eggs are still used as projectile weapons. Unlike in ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'', the eggs hold no special effects, although eggs thrown by the White and Black Yoshis have more of an explosive impact. When a Yoshi eats a colored Shy Guy, it lays a Yoshi egg with spots that match the colored Shy Guy, including [[Black Shy Guy (Yoshi's Story)|Black Shy Guy]]s, though black-spotted eggs do not explode when thrown unless the Black Yoshi or White Yoshi is active. Every other enemy that can be eaten by a Yoshi automatically produces a green-spotted egg. Yoshi's Eggs,[1][2] also formatted as Yoshi's eggs,[3][4] Yoshi Eggs,[5][6] or Yoshi eggs, are objects from which Baby Yoshis hatch. Yoshi utilizes several abilities with eggs, namely throwing them as projectiles. A Yoshi's Egg is an emblem associated with Yoshis in general. Barring one minor instance, games never depict a Yoshi hatching from an egg that is shown to be laid by another one. The standard design of a Yoshi's Egg is white with green dots, but they can appear in a variety of colors, depending on either the Yoshi that laid the egg or the egg's contents or properties. There are gigantic variations known as Giant Eggs.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario World / Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]

Artwork of Mario and an egg
Artwork of Mario discovering an egg in Super Mario World

Yoshi Eggs first appear in Super Mario World. When one is discovered, Yoshi hatches from it, having been trapped in one by Bowser along with his fellow Yoshis.[7][8] If Yoshi is already nearby, a 1-Up Mushroom emerges instead.[9] The player character somehow recovers a yellow-spotted egg after completing a Castle,[10] though they appear in a variety of colors in the GBA reissue,[11] to match the colors of the Baby Yoshis that hatch from each of them in the ending of both versions.[12][13] If a Yoshi eats ten red berries, a Super Mushroom hatches from it.[14] In the remake, the type of power-up is dependent on the Yoshi's color: eggs from a Green Yoshi hatch out a Super Mushroom,[15] eggs from a Red Yoshi hatch out a Fire Flower, eggs from a Blue Yoshi hatch out a Cape Feather,[16] and yellow eggs hatch out a Starman. If two pink berries are eaten, the egg will hatch a Yoshi Cloud.[17] When the egg is expelled, it acts as a projectile. It can defeat enemies or activate blocks until it hatches.

There are also multicolored eggs that appear outside item boxes in the Star World levels. Approaching one of these will cause it to hatch into a baby Yoshi, with its color matching the color of the egg. In Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, the Bros. can find an egg of any color in a ? Block after finding the corresponding Yoshi in Star World and feeding it enough enemies or objects to grow it to maturity, though which egg will spawn is dependent on the Bros.' current form. The possible outcomes are as follows; forms written in italics will always spawn that particular Yoshi, assuming it has already been found and fed in Star World, whereas forms not written in italics will randomly spawn a Yoshi among those which have already been unlocked:

  • Green Yoshi for Small Mario, Super Mario, Fire Mario (if Red Yoshi has not been found and fed yet), and Caped Mario (if Blue Yoshi has not been found and fed yet).
  • Yellow Yoshi for Small Mario, Super Mario, Fire Mario (if Red Yoshi has not been found and fed yet), and Caped Mario (if Blue Yoshi has not been found and fed yet).
  • Red Yoshi for Small Mario, Super Mario, Fire Mario, and Caped Mario (if Blue Yoshi has not been found and fed yet).
  • Blue Yoshi for Small Mario, Super Mario, Fire Mario (if Red Yoshi has not been found and fed yet) and Caped Mario.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe[edit]

All states of Yoshi in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

Yoshi Eggs[18] appear in each level of challenge mode in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. Every Yoshi Egg is located only in a Hidden Block, usually one exclusive to Challenge Mode. Collecting the egg earns the player 2,000 points, and a Yoshi hatches from the egg upon clearing the level. The Toy Box has an unlockable feature where the player can find the approximate location of a Yoshi Egg within a random level,[18] titled "Yoshi Is Here!." Collecting every Yoshi Egg unlocks the Peach Award.[19]

Super Mario Advance[edit]

Yoshi Eggs are collectable in Yoshi Challenge, a mode available after completing the main game in Super Mario Advance. Every level has two Yoshi Eggs, located in place of the Mushrooms in Subspace. If the player loses a life, they have to collect the eggs in the level again. Once every Yoshi Egg is found in a world, a Yoshi hatches from each of them.[20]

Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

Yoshi eggs[21] become available in Super Mario Sunshine after completing The Wilted Sunflowers, an episode of Pinna Park, causing Shadow Mario to appear with a Yoshi egg in front of the Grand Pianta Statue in Delfino Plaza.[22] After this, a Yoshi egg becomes permanently available on a rooftop next to the western bell tower at Delfino Plaza,[23] as well as in other episodes such as Yoshi's Fruit Adventure. There is a thought bubble depicting a certain fruit within each Yoshi egg, from which a Yoshi can hatch when presented with the requested fruit; the color of the Yoshi that emerges depends on which fruit is given to it. If Yoshi is defeated, he returns inside of the egg in its original location.[24]

Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs are projectiles that only Yoshi can use in Super Mario 64 DS. A Yoshi's Egg is produced by swallowing nearly any enemy,[25] and he can throw it as a projectile.[25] Only one Yoshi's Egg can follow behind Yoshi at a time. If Yoshi swallows a crate, the egg takes the form of a cube,[26] and slides across the ground like a regular crate when thrown.[27] A Yoshi's Egg automatically disappears if Yoshi collects a Power Flower or puts on a cap. Yoshi cannot throw an egg while under the effects of a Super Mushroom. Yoshi's Egg symbols also appear in two of Luigi's minigames, Mario Slot and Super Mario Slot, where getting three in a row earns the player five coins.

Super Mario 64 did not feature any Yoshi's Eggs, but an unused egg texture can be found in the game's coding.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

Egg planet from Good Egg Galaxy

While the Yoshi's Eggs themselves do not appear as actual interactive objects in Super Mario Galaxy, there is a planet in the Good Egg Galaxy that resembles the Yoshi's Egg.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Yoshi eggs return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Two green ones are first seen in the background of the opening cutscene, where a small one with a blue bow is next to a larger one with a pink bow.[28] As interactable objects, Yoshi's Eggs work like they do in Super Mario World and appear in World 1-3, World 2-5, World 3-2, World 4-5, World 6-4, and World 7-6. In multiplayer, a difference is that the number of Yoshi eggs that appear from a certain ? Block or Brick Block, and therefore the number of Yoshis, is the same as the number of players onscreen. Besides eating five fruits, a Yoshi egg can also hatch if a Yoshi eats a Pokey during a vocal "paah."[29]

In the E3 2009 prototype, the pink Yoshi eggs were originally red eggs from which a Red Yoshi would hatch.[30]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

A Yoshi egg in Super Mario Galaxy 2

Yoshi eggs in Super Mario Galaxy 2 play a larger role than in the game's predecessor. They are located on nest-like holes within several galaxies. The first mission of Yoshi Star Galaxy involves breaking open a Yoshi egg that Yoshi had been trapped inside of.[31] An egg breaks if either jumped on or spun into. If the player loses Yoshi, he retreats into his egg, which returns to its original location. A Yoshi egg also appears on the "nose" of Starship Mario after completing the first mission of Yoshi Star Galaxy.[32][33]

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Yoshi eggs in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and their port work the same as they do in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, except only green Yoshi eggs hatch Yoshis; such eggs also appear from certain Hidden Blocks. The game introduces a golden variation with white spots that hatches Glowing Baby Yoshis, except only one appears from certain ? Blocks and hatch the exact number of Glowing Baby Yoshis as the number of players presently onscreen.

In New Super Mario Bros. U, green Yoshi eggs appear in the levels Yoshi Hill, Perilous Pokey Cave, Above the Cheep Cheep Seas, Prickly Goombas!, Fuzzy Clifftop, and Seesaw Shrooms, while Glowing Baby Yoshi eggs appear in the levels Fire Snake Cavern and Which-Way Labyrinth. In New Super Luigi U, green Yoshi eggs and Glowing Baby Yoshi eggs appear in fewer levels than in New Super Mario Bros. U. Green Yoshi Eggs appear in levels Rolling Yoshi Hills, Underground Grrrols, Beanstalk Jungle, Fire and Ice, and Above the Bouncy Clouds, while Glowing Baby Yoshi eggs only appear in the level Piranhas in the Dark.

In the E3 2012 prototype of New Super Mario Bros. U, large blue Yoshi eggs with white spots that hatch Bubble Baby Yoshis and likewise for Balloon Baby Yoshis from magenta Yoshi eggs with white spots can appear from certain ? Blocks.[34] Both eggs would go unused since both types of Baby Yoshis are located on the world map, where they follow players instead.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs reappear in Super Mario Maker and its port. They and the Yoshis that hatch from them are usable only in the Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U styles, since Goomba's Shoes are their equivalents in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 styles. If an egg or the resulting Yoshi is crushed, it disappears. A Yoshi's Egg can be changed into big Yoshi's Egg from which two Yoshis hatch before running as if an enemy or obstacle had hit them. It is possible to place more than one Yoshi's Egg, though only two hatch Yoshis while the others disappear. A Yoshi's Egg on a track does not hatch until the player touches it, knocking it off of the track, not does a Yoshi's Egg hatch within a Koopa Clown Car.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs in Super Mario Odyssey appear in secret areas the of Dark Side and on top of Peach's Castle in the Mushroom Kingdom. A Yoshi's Egg can be broken from either a jump or being hit by Cappy to break them, causing Yoshi to hatch.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs in Super Mario Maker 2 are mostly like in Super Mario Maker, but with a few differences. A Yoshi's Egg can be attached to a parachute, and dragging a Super Mushroom onto a Yoshi's Egg turns it red instead, hatching a Red Yoshi with the ability to breathe fire.

Super Mario World television series[edit]

Luigi is turned into an egg by a Koopa Wizard in "The Yoshi Shuffle",[35] resembling an inverted Yoshi's Egg from being green with white spots.

An actual Yoshi's Egg appears in "Mama Luigi". During a flashback, Luigi finds it inside of a ? Block in the Lava Pits, from which Yoshi as a baby immediately hatches. While Yoshi is green, this egg has red spots instead.

Yoshi[edit]

Two halves of a Yoshi's egg.
The bottom and top halves of the Yoshi's egg

Top and bottom halves of a Yoshi's egg appear on the playing field throughout Yoshi.

  • Sprite of a Baby Yoshi, from the NES version of Yoshi. Little Yoshi: 0 enemies (as well as 1 in the Famicom/NES version)
  • Sprite of a regular Yoshi, from the NES version of Yoshi. Yoshi: 2-4 enemies (Famicom/NES version) or 1-3 enemies (Game Boy version)
  • Sprite of a Winged Yoshi, from the NES version of Yoshi. Winged Yoshi: 5-6 (Famicom/NES version) or 4-5 enemies (Game Boy version)
  • Sprite of a Star Yoshi, from the NES version of Yoshi. Star Yoshi: 7 (Famicom/NES version) or 6 enemies (Game Boy version)

Club Nintendo[edit]

In the Club Nintendo comic "Ostern im Schwammerlland", the Easter bunny dropped a Yoshi egg, out of which Yoshi emerged.

A Yoshi egg has a major role in "Mario in Mariozilla". In this story, some fog coming out of Kamek's broom shrinks the Magikoopa and Mario to ant-size. When they sit on a blade of grass waiting for help, Yoshi swallows them. All attempts to get the two out of Yoshi's mouth fail, but ultimately Dr. Light gets the idea that Yoshi laying an egg could be the solution to the problem. Yoshi obviously has difficulties doing so, but two hours later, he finally lays an egg. Light breaks it up and Mario and Kamek come out of it.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Super Mario Kart[edit]

Yoshi Egg Super Mario Kart.png

An egg is an item that can only be used by Yoshi in Super Mario Kart,[36] if it is a CPU. The egg has the same function as a Banana but with short bouncing animations.

Mario Kart 64[edit]

Yoshi Valley
The Giant Egg from Yoshi Valley in Mario Kart 64

Though no regular Yoshi's Eggs appear in Mario Kart 64, a Giant Egg does appear as an obstacle in Yoshi Valley. Yoshi's Eggs would have supposedly appeared, as seen from unused data.[37]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]

A Yoshi's Egg in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.
A Yoshi's Egg in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Yoshi's Egg is Yoshi's special item in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! His partner, Birdo, has the similar Birdo's Egg for a special item, and both look nearly the same except Birdo's Egg has magenta spots. When thrown, the Yoshi's Egg rolls along after a nearby opponent,[38] functioning like a Red Shell somewhat. When the Yoshi's Egg breaks, three random items are released,[38] which can be Green Shells, Mushrooms, Bananas, Stars, or Bob-ombs. The Yoshi's Egg breaks after rolling for a while, whether the player is in first or the Yoshi's Egg takes too long to hit the nearest target.

Mario Kart Arcade GP subseries[edit]

The Rolling Egg is the special item of Yoshi in Mario Kart Arcade GP and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2. It can be launched not only forward but also backward, though the Rolling Egg moves aimlessly, in the manner of a Green Shell. The Rolling Egg does not release items upon breaking.

Yoshi has some other special items similar to the Rolling Egg. The Egg Body, exclusive to the first game, gives a kart based on a Yoshi's Egg. In both games, the Mystery Egg takes the form of a Yoshi Egg with multicolored spots.

Mario Kart DS[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs are referenced in Mario Kart DS, since Yoshi's kart, Egg 1, was designed to resemble one. A Giant Egg also appears in the scenery of Yoshi Falls.

Mario Kart Wii[edit]

A Yoshi's Egg is Yoshi's emblem on karts and bikes in Mario Kart Wii. The same giant Giant Egg returns in the background of DS Yoshi Falls.

Mario Kart 7[edit]

Yoshi's Egg is featured as Yoshi's emblem in Mario Kart 7, and its likeness, the Egg 1, also returns.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

N64 Yoshi Valley

The Yoshi's Egg is represented as Yoshi's emblem in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and the spots now change color depending on which Yoshi is used.[39] Yoshi's Eggs now appear in the background of N64 Yoshi Valley,[40] unlike before, but the Giant Egg remains as an obstacle. Three Yoshi's Eggs also appear in a nest in the logo of the sponsor Yoshi's Egg Market. The Egg Cup, originally included as downloadable content in the first Mario Kart 8, uses a Yoshi's Egg as its emblem.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs reappear in Mario Kart Tour as the special skill of Yoshi, Red Yoshi, Orange Yoshi, Light-blue Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, Yoshi (Reindeer), Yoshi (Egg Hunt), and Yoshi Mii Racing Suit, functioning the same way as in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! When Yoshi's Egg+ is active, the egg is bigger and drops an extra item after hitting something. The Egg 1 also appears in the game as a Super kart. The Eggshell Glider resembles the top part of a Yoshi's Egg. Yoshi's Eggs also appear as background elements in N64 Yoshi Valley like in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Mario & Wario[edit]

Just before the player begins LEVEL2: Yosu Ko in Mario & Wario, Wario places the upper half of a Yoshi's egg onto Mario.[41]

Yoshi's Island series[edit]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

An animated Yoshi's egg from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Eggs in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its port can be produced by swallowing enemies.[42][43] and then thrown.[44][45] Yoshi has to aim an egg before throwing it.[46][47] When an egg is throw, it bounces off of surrounding surfaces twice before falling off-screen, turning yellow then red with each bounce. Eggs are produced by Egg Blocks and spit out by Egg Plants until there are six in total. Throwing an egg into a tulip causes it to produce some Stars.

Other egg varieties include Yellow eggs, which produce coins;[48] Red eggs, which produce two Stars;[48] Flashing Eggs, which produces a Red Coin; and Giant Eggs, which are created from swallowing a Fat Guy, as well as red Giant Eggs that are used only in the final battle with Big Baby Bowser.

Yoshi's Island DS[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs in Yoshi's Island DS function like in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.[49] There are also flashing Eggs, which are out of reach in the stage Yoshi's Island Easter Eggs and used to count how many rooms are cleared. Giant Eggs have a similar role as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, since they are used to attack Bowser in the two final battles against him.

Yoshi's New Island[edit]

Yoshi eggs reappear in Yoshi's New Island, working the same as before. The game introduces Mega Eggdozers and Metal Eggdozers, both of which can be used to destroy several giant items and enemies.

UNDAKE30 Same Game[edit]

Yoshi Eggs are one of the icons on the playing field in UNDAKE30 Same Game.

Game & Watch Gallery series[edit]

Game & Watch Gallery[edit]

In Game & Watch Gallery, Yoshi Eggs appear in the Modern versions of two games. In Fire, they fall out the window of Princess Peach's burning castle,[50] revealing either a Bob-omb or Super Star when broken.[51] In Oil Panic, Yoshi can lay an egg and throw it at Bowser as a method to launch him away.

Game & Watch Gallery 2[edit]

In Game & Watch Gallery 2, Yoshi Eggs appear in the Modern versions of four games.

In Parachute, three Yoshi Eggs come out of the flying ship every 100 points. They disappear to reveal a Super Star in one and a Boo Buddy in another.

In Chef, Yoshi lays an egg if he is fed five consecutive pieces of cooked food. If he is fed five more consecutive pieces of cooked food, the egg hatches into a Baby Yoshi, which replaces him. The egg disappears if Yoshi is fed any burnt food.

In Vermin, six Yoshi Eggs must be protected from Fly Guys, Para Troopas, and Boo Buddies. The enemies start pounding the eggs if they get too close. The game ends if an egg gets completely broken.

In Ball, the Yoshi variant involves juggling two or three Yoshi Eggs, depending on the game difficulty.

Game & Watch Gallery 3[edit]

In Game & Watch Gallery 3, Yoshi Eggs appear in the Modern versions of two games.

In Egg, a Light Blue Yoshi lays an egg if he eats a baked Yoshi-shaped Yoshi Cookie after eating enough baked cookies to fill up one of the cookie meters. He can lay up to two eggs. One egg eventually hatches into a Baby Yoshi if the Light Blue Yoshi continues eating cookies without missing. Any eggs disappear if the Yoshi misses a cookie.

In Turtle Bridge, a Yoshi Egg is given by Mario to Toad as one of the items to deliver to Peach if Toad continues delivering Mushrooms without losing a life. If Toad continues delivering Yoshi Eggs without missing, Mario eventually gives him a present to deliver.

Game & Watch Gallery 4[edit]

In Game & Watch Gallery 4, Yoshi Eggs reprise their roles in the Modern versions of Fire (besides 3-Up Moons replacing Super Stars) and Chef. One of the balloons that lifts Yoshi in a hammock in the Message Board is shaped like a Yoshi Egg.[52]

Yoshi's Story[edit]

Six Yoshi's eggs
Six eggs in Yoshi's Story

Yoshi eggs are laid automatically in Yoshi's Story when an enemy is eaten, but the eggs are still used as projectile weapons. Unlike in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the eggs hold no special effects, although eggs thrown by the White and Black Yoshis have more of an explosive impact. When a Yoshi eats a colored Shy Guy, it lays a Yoshi egg with spots that match the colored Shy Guy, including Black Shy Guys, though black-spotted eggs do not explode when thrown unless the Black Yoshi or White Yoshi is active. Every other enemy that can be eaten by a Yoshi automatically produces a green-spotted egg. The spots of an Egg Block and its produced eggs are always green, though in international releases, both match the color of the current Yoshi.[53] The tech demo port features the eggs as flat 2D sprites with an outline that indicate Yoshi's health alongside the Smile Meter.

Wario Land II[edit]

The treasure for the third story of the "Invade Wario Castle" chapter in Wario Land II resembles a Yoshi's egg.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

SmashWiki article: Yoshi's Egg (item)

Throughout the Super Smash Bros. series, three of Yoshi's special moves involve utilizing Yoshi's Eggs in some way. Yoshi's neutral special move, Egg Lay, lets him swallow opponents and turn them into eggs, temporarily stunning them. His Egg Throw is his up special move, and for his side special move, Egg Roll (introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee), Yoshi can encase himself in an egg and roll around. Also, his shield makes him encase himself into an egg. Additionally, for his stage entrance, Yoshi hatches from an egg.

A single Yoshi egg appears in one of the events of Super Smash Bros. Melee. In it, Yoshi must keep the Yoshi egg from breaking. If it is broken, the player fails. If time runs out and the Yoshi egg is not broken, the player wins. The goal of the twelfth event of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sleeping in the Eggs, is for Yoshi to capture Kirby and Pikachu inside Yoshi eggs simultaneously.

In the first three games, the eggs are always green, regardless of the palette swap. Since Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the egg matches the palette swap.

Mario Tennis series[edit]

Yoshi eggs only have small appearances in Mario Tennis series. It is the emblem on Yoshi's racket in Mario Tennis, and the cutscene of Yoshi winning a tournament shows him laying a metallic golden egg.[54] Similarly, in Mario Tennis Open, the cutscene of a colored Yoshi winning the Champions Cup or Final Cup shows them eating a trophy and hatching it afterward; the spots on the eggs have the same color as the Yoshis.

Mario Party series[edit]

The Yoshi's Egg emblem as seen in Mario Party 7 and Mario Party 8.

In most Mario Party games, the Yoshi's Egg appeared as one of the objects in various minigames. In Mario Party 3 and Mario Party Superstars, Yoshi's Eggs appear as items in the minigame Messy Memory. Yoshi and Birdo's signature orb in Mario Party 7 is the Egg Orb, which transforms any Character Space (including Koopa Kid Spaces) into a Yoshi's Egg. Also, Yoshi's Eggs appear in Mario Party: Island Tour as an item in Puzzle Pronto, Tile Savvy (only in Time Attack), and Three House. Yoshi's Eggs also appear in the Yoshi amiibo board in Mario Party 10. A Yoshi's Egg is also seen on a card in the Mario Party: Star Rush minigame Top It Off.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

A multi-colored Yoshi's Egg appears in Glitzville in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door after Mario defeats Spike Storm in the Glitz Pit. The egg escapes from Mr. Hoggle,[55] who wanted to use it to make the Southern Fried Egg Dog of Tastiness at his Hot Dog Stand, but could not catch it.[56] Mario manages to catch up to the egg, which starts following him around in the field while staying out of battles. At one point, after Mario loses to the The Iron Adonis Twins, he finds that the egg hatched into a Yoshi Kid, who becomes a party member. Laying and throwing eggs is the Yoshi's super rank technique, Mini-Egg, and the eggs that are used can shrink the enemy that it hits.

Mario Pinball Land[edit]

A Yoshi Egg functions as a type of pinball in Mario Pinball Land. Mario can either buy one at Toad's tent, obtain one from certain ? Blocks, or receive one from a roulette after getting a question mark. If a Yoshi Egg goes to a different area from the one Mario is in in a level, the egg can be found when he enters that area as well, or vice versa. In addition to the regular green-spotted Yoshi Egg, there is also a Special Egg[citation needed] that is red with white stars instead of spots. A Special Egg can be obtained from a red ! Block that appears in a level's boss area after all the level's Red Coins are collected, but only if the player does not already have an item. When used, a Special Egg combines the effects of multiple items found in the game. As well as the player being given a second ball, like when using a Yoshi Egg, both balls are giant (the effect of a Mega Mushroom), and the drain at the bottom of the screen is blocked (same as when using a Pipe), meaning Mario cannot lose a life. Mario also becomes invincible (as if he used an Invincibility Star). There are only four Special Eggs available in the game, and upon collecting or using one, Mario yells, "Special!"[57]

Yoshi Touch & Go[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs, which are laid by collecting fruit, can be used to collect items and defeat enemies in Yoshi Touch & Go.

Mario Superstar Baseball[edit]

Eggs are used in the minigame Piranha Panic to defeat Piranha Plants in Mario Superstar Baseball.[58][59] Eggs are featured in red, blue, green, and yellow spots, each effective only towards a Piranha Plant of the matching color, except Purple Piranha Plants, which are vulnerable to eggs of any color. If the Piranha Plant is hit by the wrong egg color, it spits fire at the player who threw it.[60]

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[edit]

Yoshi eggs are featured in Dream Equestrian in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The goal is to race to the finish line while riding a wagon full of seven Yoshi eggs that are colored red, blue, yellow, pink, light-blue, black and white respectively. Obstacles have to be avoided so that the eggs do not fall off,[61] since each loss earns the player a 10-second penalty when completing the event.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]

Yoshiegg DreamTeam.png

A single red Yoshi egg is found in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team as a key item, and the third item collected during a series of item trades pertaining to a sidequest in Wakeport. Mario and Luigi are given this item from a red Yoshi in the hotel district in northeast Wakeport after they give him the Rare Fruit.

Mario and Luigi must then head to the west side of the entrance to Pi'illoper's house in northwest Wakeport to give this item to a nearby Toad, who will thank them and give them Peach's Photo in exchange.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, the Yoshi in the mission "Yoshi Rush" eats three berries, creating Yoshi's Eggs. The Yoshi's Eggs trail behind the Yoshi during the race, and can be kicked at the Mario Bros. in order to slow them down.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Brothership has a Yoshi's Egg being the symbol and main weapon for the Bros. Attack Hatch Me if You Can, where Mario and Luigi have to pass one before smashing it into the targeted enemy, after which a Yoshi pops out and attacks the target with a Ground Pound.

Mario Golf series[edit]

“Multiple balls have been turned into eggs!”
Toad, Mario Golf: Super Rush

A Yoshi egg appears in some of Yoshi's post-hole animations in Mario Golf: World Tour: Yoshi turns into an egg when he gets a bogey,[62] in addition to rolling around and hitting the camera if it is a double bogey or worse.[63] Yoshi Lake has some giant Yoshi eggs, with some of the smaller ones being the tee markers. Yoshi eggs in Mario Golf: Super Rush have a different role, where when Yoshi's special shot, the Eggschanger, lands near other balls, they become Yoshi Eggs, which wobble when bounced.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]

While Yoshi's Eggs do not appear in Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World as weapons (having been replaced with yarn balls), one made of yarn appears during Yoshi's transformation after entering a Transformation Door. Another one that has different colors of spots on it represents the Wonderful World of Wool level on the world map. A Yoshi's Egg is also used as the icon for Classic Mode and the world list on the world map's pause menu, and doilies with Yoshi's Egg designs with spots matching each world's theme color appear on the ground at each of the entrances on Craft Island.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit]

A Yoshi egg appears in the same post-hole animations from Yoshi in Mario Sports Superstars as in Mario Golf: World Tour.[64]

Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]

Yoshi's Eggs reappear in Yoshi's Crafted World, and function the same as in earlier Yoshi platforming games, although they can now be thrown at the items in the back and foregrounds. In addition, after throwing an egg at a surface such as a wall, Yoshi can jump off the egg as it bounces off that surface to gain extra height.[65] In this game, there are four different colors of Yoshi eggs: green, red, orange, and blue.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

In the teaser posterMedia:The Super Mario Bros Movie teaser poster.jpg for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a green Yoshi's Egg can be seen in the antiques store. In the movie itself, a Shy Guy brings a Yoshi's Egg to Bowser's and Peach's wedding as a wedding gift. Later in the post-credits scene, that same Yoshi's Egg is seen sitting in rubble in the sewer in Brooklyn that Mario and Luigi entered at the beginning of the film. The egg begins to hatch and Yoshi's voice is heard as the screen cuts to black.

Other appearances[edit]

A Yoshi egg is an item in several games of the Animal Crossing series. A Yoshi egg can be received in Animal Crossing: City Folk for 1,000 shop points, and in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, a Yoshi's egg is one of the 50 prizes from Fortune cookies. In Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Yoshi's egg can be claimed as a reward after catching a Cheep Chomp in Fishing Tourney #12, which began on March 14, 2019 as part of the Super Mario crossover event for Mario Day.

In the Yoshi's Island Zone DLC level of the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World, the player can obtain Yoshi Eggs by hitting an Egg Block like in the Yoshi's Island series; however, they cannot be used as a projectile weapon. The player has to instead take the Yoshi Eggs to the end of the level, where they will hatch into Yoshis and give extra lives. If an enemy hits the player, they will lose all of their Yoshi Eggs.
