DEF-Down icon from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

DEF-Down is a status ailment that mostly appears in the Mario & Luigi series. It is an abbreviation for "Defense-Down".

History[edit]

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, enemies like Glurps have the ability to change Mario and Luigi's stats. If their defense power goes down, enemy attacks will do more damage. The ailment is indicated by a gray block with an arrow pointing down.

Luigi's Thunder Bros. attack can give this status to enemies.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]

DEF-Down is the same status ailment in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Its indicator is a shrinking green circle around the afflicted. Ice Flowers can randomly inflict this status ailment on enemies.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

Luigi under the "DEF Down" status ailment.

DEF-Down makes another appearance in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. Green streaks flowing downward indicate the affected. Many enemies can inflict this status on one of the bros., mainly enemies with the power to electrocute the bros. such as Kretin. The Falling Star and Softener Gloves (in the remake) can inflict this status on enemies. The Fury effect, except when applied to bosses, combines this effect with POW-Up.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]

DEF-Down once again makes an appearance in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, visually the same as Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Green streaks flowing downward and black flashing indicate the affected. Many enemies can inflict this status on one of the bros. This status can be inflicted on enemies using a Virus-Master badge combo, or a Risk-Bronze badge combo (though the latter is less likely to do so, and it can affect the brothers).

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

DEF-Down returns in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. By using a DEF-Down Battle Card, Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario can lower all enemies' defense.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]

DEF-Down returns in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. Unlike in past games, it cannot be cured with a Refreshing Herb. DEF-Down is also inflicted on certain bosses when Luigi stuns them with his new Luigi Logic ability in conjunction with Dizzy, but the boss in question otherwise cannot be inflicted with the effect. Weeping Troopers can also inflict this condition with their boomerangs.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

“Soft lowers your Defense all the way down to 0 for a few turns because your...overalls get thinner. I guess.”
Battle Master, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch)

The status ailment appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, where it is known as the "Soft" status. It is indicated by a gray diamond with an arrow pointing down. Softness lowers defense by 3 points, to a minimum of 0; however, softening an enemy with a defense boost negates both, prematurely ending the defense boost. The Soft status is induced by items such as a Mr. Softener or badge attacks such as the Soft Stomp. There are no enemies in this game who can inflict it without items.
