Frozen
- “Mario's frozen! He can't move right now!”
- —Battle text, Paper Mario
Frozen is a status ailment that appears in the Paper Mario series and the Mario + Rabbids series.
History[edit]
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
In Paper Mario, if Mario is frozen, he will not be able to move for several turns. It is indicated by a very large, irregular chunk of ice surrounding Mario. Frost Piranhas can inflict the Frozen status on Mario with their breath attack, and the Crystal King can also inflict it with his Ice Bolt attack.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
The status ailment returned in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its remake and serves much the same purpose, with one key difference. When Mario, his partner, or any enemy's frozen status expires, that character will take 1 HP of damage when the ice breaks. It is indicated by a hexagonal ice crystal icon, and by the afflicted character being surrounded by a hexagonal chunk of ice only as big as them. In addition, if any attack that can induce a Burn is used on a frozen character, it will negate both status ailments. Ice Puffs, Frost Piranhas, Beldam, Grodus, and Bonetail can all inflict the Frozen status on their foes, while Mario is able to inflict it with the Ice Smash badge and the Ice Storm item. Some consumable food items are capable of inducing Frozen in the user (namely, Icicle Pop, Snow Bunny, and Zess Frappe). A spraying stage prop can cause this ailment as well.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
The status effect returns in Super Paper Mario. Several items including the Fruit Parfait and Snow Bunny freeze enemies if used in battle. The following enemies can freeze the heroes: Ice Cherbils, Frost Piranhas, and Bonechill, whose freeze ailment is more powerful than any other found in the game. The player can only break free if they shake the Wii Remote.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
It reappears in Paper Mario: Sticker Star, but only on the overworld when Mario gets in contact with an Ice Bro's iceballs. Mario will be stunned for a few seconds, and if any enemy makes contact with Mario in this state, they will automatically get a First Strike on Mario, even if they otherwise cannot.
Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]
In The Origami King, the Frozen status can be inflicted on Scissors and King Olly's Earth Vellumental form using the Ice Vellumental's power. It prevents the target from acting but also increases their defense, making the boss take no damage from most sources. Instead, Mario can use the 1,000-Fold Arms to stun and attack the target for major damage, or use fire-based attacks to deal 1 damage each hit. Using a Fire Vellumental on a frozen boss will thaw the ice while dealing 1 damage.
Mario + Rabbids series[edit]
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]
The status effect makes an appearance in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, being named Freeze. Instead of immobilizing characters completely, inflicted characters cannot use any of their techniques for one turn. While inflicted characters can wait until the next turn, as with other prevention status ailments, they can also clear it by having an ally perform a team jump with the inflicted character.
The following enemies can inflict Freeze with their weapons:
- Blizzy
- Icicle Golem
- Spooky Supporter
- Bwario
- Tropical Ziggy
Freeze is one of the four status effects that cause the deactivation of certain abilities, with the other three being Honey, Ink, and Stone.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]
- “ Frostbite Super Effect freezes targets in place, preventing any movement for one turn.”
- —Description, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
A Super Effect known as Frostbite appears in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. It functions identically to Honey from Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle; if a character is inflicted with Frostbite, they will be unable to move for one turn. Deep Freezes are enemies that cause Frostbite, while the Sparks Cryobolide and Cryogeddon allow heroes to inflict Frostbite on enemies. Frozen's original effect from Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is used by Oozer's Muzzle Technique.

- Cryobolide's Frostbite Attack
- Cryogeddon's Skyrain Frostbite
- Deep Freezes' Blizzard Burst
- Barrels that contain the Frostbite Super Effect
- Cryodash's Frostbite Dash
- Cryoquake's Shockwave Frostbite

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
This status effect is present in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. Though similar to Dizzy in that both immobilize the affected party, the first hit to the frozen combatant will be a guaranteed critical, but will also revert the status effect. This effect can also be guarded against by using the Temperature Guard Battle Plug.
Though mainly inflicted by ice enemies like Iceads, the Bros. can also cause this status ailment through any "Excellent!" normal attack with the Icy Attack Battle Plug, through a Max-Mix Vortex with mostly ice balls, or through a First Strike with the Fire & Ice Bros. Move.
