Fire is an element given to various attacks, items, and enemies in RPGs. It usually is strong against enemies associated with the Ice element and can inflict the Burn status effect in some games.
History
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake, fire is one of the four elements assigned to Special attacks, alongside Jump, Ice, and Lightning. Fire Bomb and Mario's Fireball, Super Fireball and Ultra Fireball are designated with the fire element. Attacking enemies or bosses weak to fire will deal twice the damage; conversely, attacking enemies and bosses who are resistant to it will have no effect and inflict 0 damage instead.
Some enemy attacks are also affiliated with the fire element (Corona/Flare, Drain/Hot Shot, Flame, Flame Stone, Flame Wall, and Mega Drain/Fire Saber), and can be negated with the Lazy Shell or Super Suit. In the remake, using Mallow's Thought Peek will reveal the targeted enemy's weaknesses, including fire.
Enemies who are only affected by fire in the original are indicated in italic, while enemies who are only affected by fire in the remake are indicated in bold.
Paper Mario series
Paper Mario
In Paper Mario, fire is an element given to the Fire Flower item and Kooper's Fire Shell. Some enemies are weak to fire, meaning that they will receive flat additional damage on top of the attack, or immune, which will negate the attack entirely and inflict 0 damage instead. Other enemies, like Bob-ombs, will be instantaneously defeated if attacked with the fire element.
Some enemies are associated with the fire element, visually represented by them being engulfed with flames. Attacking these enemies with Mario's Jump attacks or partner attacks that make direct contact with the enemy (minus Kooper's attacks and Parakarry's Shell Shot) will be negated, and the attacker will receive 1 damage instead. These enemies are usually weak against ice and water attacks, and in some cases will momentarily be extinguished by them and lose their fire element. They include Pyro Guys, Lava Bubbles, Lava Piranha and the Lava Buds' second phase, Petit Piranhas, and Embers.
The Ice Power badge increases Mario's attacks by 2 against fire enemies, while the Fire Shield badge reduces damage received from fire-based attacks by 1. In addition, both badges allow Mario to ignore an enemy's fire defense and jump on them normally, including from a jump-based First Strike.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
The way fire is handled is changed in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its remake in several ways. The Fire Shield badge has been removed, with its effect being fused with the Ice Power badge instead, which now gives Mario a +1 bonus in both attack and defense against fire-based enemies, namely Embers, Lava Bubbles, and Phantom Embers, on top of the fireproof Jump attacks. These specific enemies are now healed by the amount of damage they were supposed to receive from a fire attack instead of being immune to them. Buzzy Beetles and their variants are now immune to fire in all circumstances, even after being flipped.
Attacks with the fire element in this game include the Fire Flower item, Vivian's Fiery Jinx, and Mario's Fire Drive if the associated badge is equipped. The game also introduces the burn status effect: any attack with the fire element can inflict the burn status to its target, which will inflict 1 piercing fire damage to them at the end of each turn for a set number of turns; if the target is frozen, the two statuses will immediately cancel each other and return the target to its normal state. This also includes Vivian's Shade Fist, which is not a fire attack, but specifically a normal attack which inflicts burn on the target. The stage nozzle hazard can deal 1 piercing fire damage to one side of the stage as one of its random effect if they are knocked down.
Bulky Bob-ombs and Bob-ulks hit with any fire attack or burn status effect will immediately detonate, dealing explosion damage to all characters on the stage, enemies and allies alike. Dry Bones and their Red Bones and Dark Bones variants will be permanently removed from the fight if they are defeated with a fire attack, or if their corpse receives fire damage before they resurrect.

Paper Mario: The Origami King
In Paper Mario: The Origami King, attacks with the fire element will deal 50% bonus damage against
ice-themed Folded Soldiers (e.g. Ice Bros and Snow Spikes) and plants (Nipper Plants and all forms of Piranha Plants). Conversely, attacking a fire-themed enemy (e.g. Fire Bros.) with a fire attack will only deal them half of the normal damage. In addition, Buzzy Beetles are immune to the fire element.
Fire attacks include the Fire Hammer and all Fire Flower variants, which target a nearby 2x2 zone and a straight line respectively, as well as Bowser's Fire Breath when he is available as a partner. The Fire Vellumental does not deal fire damage and is not weak against ice attacks.
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
- See also: Firebrand
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, fire is one of the game's main element, here called Firebrand, alongside the lightning element, here called Thunderhand. It is the Hand Power associated with Mario, which allows him to perform a Dash in the overworld and the Fire Bros. Bros. Attack as well as its Advanced version in battle.
Some enemies can be weak to fire, which deals more damage to them as a Critical hit, or be immune to it and absorb the attacks to heal themselves. Others can be resistant to Hand Powers, turning any fire attack into a flat 1 damage. This is independent from the Critical and Heal effects and can be added to them, effectively dealing 2 damage and healing 1 HP respectively. This is changed in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, which only reduces the attacks' power instead, is not cumulative with other effectivenesses, and is applied to each element separately rather than both.
Ennemis hit with a fire attack can receive the burn status effect. Only enemies can be affected by it.
Enemies who are only affected by fire in the original are indicated in italic, while enemies who are only affected by fire in the remake are indicated in bold. Some enemies have differences in the Japanese and international releases of the original game, denoted here by [J] and [I] respectively. Additionally, several bosses, namely Bowser, Dragohoho, and Rookie, have fire healing but cannot be fought before Mario acquires Firebrand.
