“Ooof... I sure take a lot of knocks in this line of work. I'm getting too old for this ghost-catching tomfoolery. Anyway, nice to meet you. I'm Professor E. Gadd.”
Professor E. Gadd, Luigi's Mansion

Professor E. Gadd, also known by his full name Professor Elvin Gadd or simply E. Gadd, is an elderly scientist who debuted in Luigi's Mansion and is the founder of Gadd Science, Incorporated. He is a researcher of ghosts and is responsible for a variety of inventions, most notably the Poltergust series of vacuums. He makes ambiguous gibberish sounds when speaking (supplied by Kazumi Totaka, who took inspiration from Animal Crossing's "Animalese" when inventing the voice[1]), and he frequently uses phrases such as "criminy," "hullabaloo," etc. His name comes from the exclamation "egad," a minced oath for the archaic expletive "ye gods."

History

Background

In his past, E. Gadd lived on the foothills of the Thwomp Volcano, as depicted in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. The Mario Bros. go back in time and end up saving his lab from burning down when fire blocks erupted from the Thwomp Volcano. He then helps the Mario Bros. by inspiring his older present self to create the Hydrogush 4000; as the Mario Bros. are in the present, he starts to get the idea for the device, which transfers to his future self. The present-day Professor E. Gadd uses the Hydrogush 4000 to send water through via time hole and calm the erupting Thwomp Volcano. Afterwards, E. Gadd moves to the Boo Woods when he was around twenty-years-old, where he would later study ghosts.[2] In order to get funding for his ghost research, E. Gadd also started a cafe franchise called Starbeans Cafe.[3]

Professor E. Gadd is a supporting character in Luigi's Mansion and its remake. He is first seen saving Luigi from a Gold Ghost using his invention, the Poltergust 3000. The professor researches ghosts in the lab nearby. Upon learning of Mario's whereabouts, E. Gadd gives Luigi both the Poltergust 3000 as well as the Game Boy Horror for communication. E. Gadd continues to help Luigi for the remainder of the journey.

Professor E. Gadd returns in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. He lives in his Bunker at Evershade Valley, where the ghosts are friendly from the pacifying effects of the Dark Moon. He and the ghosts work at a lab in Gloomy Manor, where E. Gadd conducts his studies, in addition to his Toad assistants at the mansions nearby. When King Boo (who had escaped from his portrait sold by E. Gadd) destroys the Dark Moon, the ghosts become villains and start causing destruction. E. Gadd enlists the help of Luigi to restore the Dark Moon. He gives Luigi the upgraded Poltergust 5000, which comes with an upgraded flashlight named the Strobulb. E. Gadd also invented the Pixelator, which converts Luigi into pixels as he travels between locations; the Dual Scream, replacing the Game Boy Horror; and the Dark-Light Device, which reveals invisible objects.

Luigi's Mansion Arcade

E. Gadd has a similar role in Luigi's Mansion Arcade, communicating to Luigi as he travels through the mansions. E. Gadd also offers a tutorial to the player upon starting the game.

Luigi's Mansion 3

E. Gadd returns in Luigi's Mansion 3. E. Gadd is trapped into a painting at The Last Resort, after being tricked by the owner Hellen Gravely, who also freed King Boo again. He is later saved by Luigi, who comes equipped with the Poltergust G-00. E. Gadd wanted to leave the location at first, but since Luigi wants to also rescue his friends, E. Gadd assists him throughout the journey from his portable lab, where he provides the Virtual Boo for communication purposes as well as Gooigi later on. Before Luigi's final battle with King Boo, E. Gadd is trapped in a group painting with Mario and the Toads, though Polterpup saves Luigi from being caught in the painting too. In the ending, after King Boo is defeated and Luigi's friends are rescued, E. Gadd has the idea to rebuild the Last Resort complex and gives Luigi and the ghosts hard-hats as they proceed to rebuild it. All of the characters later leave the Last Resort except E. Gadd.

While E. Gadd is following Luigi, one of the poses he strikes if flashed by the Strobulb references Marilyn Monroe's famous "white dress scene" in The Seven Year Itch. The back of his lab coat even flutters upward during the pose.

Super Mario series

Super Mario Sunshine

Professor E. Gadd is alluded to by Bowser Jr. in Super Mario Sunshine when he says he got his magic brush from "a strange old man in a white coat." E. Gadd company has a company named Gadd Science, Inc., which has a logo showing a face and hairstyle resembling E. Gadd's, appearing on the magic brush, FLUDD, and even nozzle boxes.

Super Mario Maker

E. Gadd is one of the Mystery Mushroom costumes in Super Mario Maker. It is unlocked by completing the Event Course Paranormal Research.

Mario & Luigi series

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

E. Gadd is the owner of Starbeans Cafe at Beanbean Castle Town in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. He tries the brewed coffee produced by Mario and Luigi and rewards Special Items. E. Gadd would have originally appeared only for the Woohoo Blend, and other Nintendo protagonists such as Link or Samus would have appeared for different blends.

In Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser, E. Gadd is found a cave by Bowser's Minions. E. Gadd claims that he followed ghosts when he fell in before talking about his research as well as mentioning that he is working on a time-travel device, a nod to the original main story's sequel. It is also revealed that E. Gadd founded Starbeans Cafe to get money toward his ghost research.

Reactions to the drinks

The professor has many different reactions for each time a new drink is made at Starbeans Cafe, usually accompanied with a humorous scene.

  • The first reaction gives a reference to Luigi's Mansion when the new brew attracts a Gold Ghost, which scares Luigi, but the professor comes in with the Poltergust 3000 and sucks it up. The professor explains that he owns the Cafe, and that each time he samples a new brew, he will give a gift to the Bros. He samples the brew and gifts to them the Greed Wallet.
  • The second reaction has the professor drawn in by the smell of the drink, and samples a flavor. He then gives the Bros. the Bonus Ring. The professor then has a major reaction to the very "Strong Brew" and asks the bartender where the bathroom is. The bartender replies that he had never built one. Luigi then rushes to get the Poltergust 3000 and sucks the professor in.
  • The third reaction has him on a Poltergust 3001, a rocket. He samples the drink and gives the Excite Spring before blasting away.
  • The fourth has him on a giant Game Boy Horror. He sends a Speedy Spirit as a representative for the sampling, much to Luigi's terror. After that, the ghost drops the Great Force.
  • In the fifth reaction, he has the giant Game Boy Horror send the drink to him. He then gifts them the Power Grip in the original or Secret Specs in the remake. He promises to come in person the next time a new brew is made.
  • In the sixth reaction, E. Gadd comes wearing a suit that makes him a ghost. He samples the drink and gives the Cobalt Necktie. A terrified Luigi uses the Poltergust 3000 to suck the professor inside.
  • In the final one, he samples the last drink and proclaims it the best one, much to his employee's annoyance. He gives the Bros. the Game Boy Horror SP. Before leaving, he hangs a photo of himself in the shop as a way to brighten one's spirits, which the employee labels dumb.

E. Gadd has a much larger role in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. He introduces his newest invention to the Mushroom Kingdom, a time machine in Peach's Castle. Some time after Mario and Luigi defeat the Junior Shrooboid, E. Gadd proceeds to study it, which he does for most of the Mario Bros.' journey.

E. Gadd later explains to Mario and Luigi that hole in the courtyard is a time hole, produced by a time machine. After the Mario Bros. enter the time hole, beginning by accident from Luigi, E. Gadd sends a living suitcase named Stuffwell to assist them.

At Thwomp Volcano, Mario, Luigi, and their baby counterparts come across and paradoxically meet a younger Professor Gadd, who is studying Thwomps. During this time, though, the volcano erupts, with several Thwomps falling in and destroying the laboratory. One threatens to explode, and must be put out; Baby Mario and Baby Luigi do this by having Baby Mario drink water and Baby Luigi hammering him to spit it at the Thwomp, dousing it. Witnessing this event in the past causes the present day E. Gadd's memories to be rearranged and inspires him to invent the Hydrogush 4000, a massive water pump. Mario and Luigi then have him pump water through the time hole leading to Thwomp Volcano to douse the mountain. After his lab is destroyed by the eruption of the volcano, young E. Gadd mentions his interests in studying ghosts, and that he would be buying a lab at the edge of the Boo Woods, alluding to Luigi's Mansion.

It is later revealed that the Shroobs are vulnerable to tears, and after learning this from Mario, Luigi, and Peach, E. Gadd sends liquid from the Hydrogush 4000 into various time holes to destroy the Shroobs and revert any Shroobified characters to their original form. E. Gadd also uses the time machine to take the characters into the future.

Mario Party series

Professor Elvin Gadd
Professor E. Gadd as seen in Mario Party Advance.

E. Gadd has many inventions in the Mario Party series. The first is supposedly the Gaddlight from Mario Party 4, but this only occurs for his localized English name. Many of the vehicle parts in Super Duel Mode of Mario Party 5 are his invention. The Gaddgets throughout Mario Party Advance are also made by E. Gadd. The magic wand and Vacuum Orb also bear his symbol in Mario Party 7.

E. Gadd is only a non-playable character in Mario Party 6, hosting E. Gadd's Garage and allowing the player who landed on a ? space to use one of his inventions, as well as Mario Party Advance, co-hosting Play Land.

Mario Kart series

Mario Kart Arcade GP and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 feature a statue of E. Gadd in the background of the Diamond City course, as well as the Gadd Science logo on a building. Robo Mario similarly has E. Gadd's symbol.

Super Smash Bros. series

E. Gadd is mentioned in the Vacuum Luigi trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, the trophies for F.L.U.D.D. and the Poltergust 3000 in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the trophy representing the various ghosts that appeared in Dark Moon in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and Luigi's Final Smash trophy, the Poltergust 5000, in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. "EGADD" is also a possible random name that a player can give their custom stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in general.

E. Gadd is featured in the form of collectible items in two games, being a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Unused appearances

Mario Kart DS

There is evidence in the US demo prototype version of Mario Kart DS that E. Gadd was going to be playable, which would have been his first playable appearance, but he was replaced with Dry Bones in the final version.

Professor E. Gadd is a small, elderly man. He wears brown shoes and a white lab coat with a red shirt underneath. He has a large head wider than his body, with a pink nose, a mouth with a singular tooth, large glasses with circles in them, and a tall but thin amount of white hair on his head. He has small dotted eyes, which are normally obscured by his glasses, but can be seen in some games if viewed at certain angles.[4] Glasses with swirls that are often seen in Japanese media are a feature E. Gadd shares with Mad Scienstein, Professor Frankly, Fawful, Francis, and Iggy Koopa. In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, there is a character named Mako whose face resembles E. Gadd's.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake, he can also wear a large blue coat.
