Ice, also referred to as ice patches or frozen surfaces, is one of the characterizing terrain elements of snow-themed levels in the Super Mario franchise. In platforming titles, player characters have poor traction on ice and it makes it more likely for them to slide off the edge of terrain and into pits or damaging hazards. Typically there are means available to regain traction or make navigation more dynamic, such as the Penguin Suit or Ice Skate.
Numerous icy objects have the same slippery property when stood on, including Ice Blocks, Ice Chunks, and Ice Meteors. Unlike them, ice is a direct component of a level's landscape and can form a diversity of different shapes, including slopes. Ice first appeared in isolation from discrete objects like Ice Blocks in Super Mario World.
