Coin Volcanoes,[1] simply referred to as volcanoes in the Prima Games guidebook,[2] are small breakable hills in New Super Mario Bros. 2. Unlike the normal volcanoes found in lava-themed courses, Coin Volcanoes occur only in the desert-themed World 2-B and do not cause any damage. They do not release volcanic debris and they can be safely walked across. Their craters are covered in a dark red crust, contrasting with the lighter surrounding ground, and they are flanked by quicksand. Coin Volcanoes erupt when their craters are struck by Bob-ombs, which are launched as Parabombs from Bob-omb Cannons in World 2-B. Upon being struck, Coin Volcanoes spew dozens of collectible coins.
There are five total Coin Volcanoes in World 2-B: four above ground, and one in an underground sub-area accessible only through a stream of quicksand located right of the Checkpoint Flag. This Coin Volcano releases the course's second Star Coin when broken.
