History
In the Mario Party series, emblems first appeared in Mario Party 2 in the barrels of the 4-Player minigame Sneak 'n' Snore. In Mario Party 3, they appear in the planes of the minigame Aces High. In Mario Party 4, emblems cam be seen in the vehicles of the minigame Mario Speedwagons. In Mario Party 7, they are used to denote who controls Character Spaces (created when someone places an Orb on a space); when using team-based rulesets, the game instead uses one of two or four preset team emblems. They also appear in Windmillville, denoting ownership of a particular windmill and the Stars tied to it. In the minigame Air Farce, emblems are depicted in each character's hang glider. In Mario Party 8, an emblem appears next to the character to indicate when it is their turn during gameplay; Koopa's Tycoon Town also uses a similar mechanic to the aforementioned Windmillville, using each character's emblem to denote ownership of the hotels. The game also includes the minigame Stampede, where the player must stamp their character's emblem onto blank sheets of paper. In Mario Party 9, emblems appear on the flags of the minigame Peak Precision, and in the results table in the minigame Castle Clearout when played with two players.

Description
Emblems have been used in the Mario Tennis series since Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, with each character's racket having their emblem inked on its strings.
Emblems have been used as early as Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, with each character's emblem inked on the strings of their respective rackets; the trend has been continued in all future Mario Tennis games since then.

Emblems would make an appearance in the Mario Kart series as well, starting with Mario Kart: Double Dash!!; certain karts have their respective character's emblem placed on the kart's body. Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii gives all characters that appear in either game a more streamlined emblem, most of which have been used in various other spinoff games since. Like in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, these emblems are applied on the kart, bike or ATV. Starting with Mario Kart 7, certain gliders would also depict the character's emblem. Mario Kart DS also introduced emblem customization, a feature currently exclusive to that game where players can create their own icons using the Nintendo DS Touch Screen, and is displayed during online matches.
Emblems first appear in the Mario Kart series in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, in which certain karts have their driver's emblem present on the kart's body. Starting in Mario Kart DS, each character has a distinct, more streamlined emblem. Like in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, a character's emblem may be present on their vehicle, with many vehicles (as well as, starting with Mario Kart 7, certain gliders) having designated spots where the driver's emblem is displayed. In Mario Kart 7, the driver's emblem is also displayed in the center of their steering wheel in First-Person View, and in Mario Kart 8, the horn on the Wii U GamePad has the driver's emblem on it with a corresponding colored background. Mario Kart DS also uniquely features emblem customization, allowing players to create their own emblems using the Nintendo DS Touch Screen, which would be displayed during online games.

In the Mario Party series, emblems first appeared in Mario Party 7, where they were used to denote who controlled Character Spaces (created when someone placed an Orb on a space); when using team-based rulesets, the game instead uses one of two (or four) preset team emblems. They also appear in Windmillville, denoting ownership of a particular windmill and the Stars tied to it. In Mario Party 8, an emblem appears next to the character to indicate when it is the character's turn during gameplay; Koopa's Tycoon Town also uses a similar mechanic to the aforementioend Windmillville, using each character's emblems to denote ownership of the hotels. The game also includes the minigame Stampede, where the player must stamp their emblem onto blank sheets of paper.
Emblems are featured on Goal Poles and Checkpoint Flags in the Super Mario series of platformers starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. When a character touches a Goal Pole or a Checkpoint Flag, the emblem on it (usually Bowser's emblem) will be replaced with their own, and the flag will change color to match the character as well.

Emblems are featured on Goal Poles and Checkpoint Flags in more recent main series platformers, starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. When a character touches a Goal Pole or a Checkpoint Flag, the Bowser emblem on it will be replaced with their own, and the flag will change color to match the character as well.
Emblems also appear in the Mario & Sonic series on flags and emblems (not to be confused with the symbols themselves). The Super Mario characters have their usual emblems, while most of the Sonic the Hedgehog characters (with the exceptions of Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega) use silhouettes of their faces, entirely in one color besides the eyes, at a different angle and with a colored background.

Emblems also make an appearance in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and subsequent entries. The symbols appear on flags and Emblems (not the symbol itself) in these games. The Mario characters have their usual logos, but since all Sonic characters with the exceptions of Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega don't have unique emblems, most have a one-colored silhouette of their faces at a different angle with a colored background.

Badge
Mario's emblem, which is used in many games, as seen on a badge in Mario Kart Tour
Super Nintendo World Power Up Bands
The Power-Up Bands for Super Nintendo World, which feature emblems for (from left to right) Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong

An emblem is a symbol that appears on an item used by a specific character in many of the Super Mario spinoff and main series titles, usually representing said character in some fashion; for example, Mario's emblem is the red M that is sewn on his cap, whereas that of Yoshi is his egg.

History[edit]

Emblems have been used in the Mario Tennis series since Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, with each character's racket having their emblem inked on its strings.

List of character emblems[edit]

Character emblems that are denoted with a darker background stopped appearing since the most recent version was first used.

Character Image First appearance Description Notes
Mario Badge Mario Tennis A red letter "M". Taken directly from the "M" insignia sewn on his red cap. Colors are sometimes inverted, commonly on a white backdrop.
Luigi Badge Mario Tennis A green letter "L". Taken directly from the "L" insignia sewn on his green cap. Colors are sometimes inverted, commonly on a white backdrop.
Princess Peach Badge Mario Tennis A yellow crown, embedded with round jewels: a red jewel on the front and two blue jewels on the side. Common depiction of Peach's Crown.
Yoshi Badge Mario Tennis A white egg with three green spots, commonly leaning towards the left. Represents Yoshi's Egg, which Yoshis lay, throw, and sometimes get trapped inside of. Other color variants of Yoshis use their egg's color variant as their emblem.
Bowser Badge Mario Tennis A red, stylized silhouette of Bowser's face, commonly on a black backdrop. His stylized silhouette is taken from his wipe transition when Mario loses a life in Super Mario 64 and certain other games.
Sometimes depicted in orange rather than red in earlier titles like Mario Power Tennis. Lacks the holes for the eyes, nose and mouth in Mario Tennis. It is also used for the Bowser Spaces in the Mario Party series.
Toad Badge Mario Tennis A Mushroom with a white cap and red spots. A stylized depiction of Toad's head.
The original depiction as used in Mario Tennis was less round and had no eyes. The version used in Mario Party 7 and Mario Party 8 includes a small, smiling mouth as well. Sometimes colored blue if Toad is blue in a game, and sometimes used in a different color to match when another, differently-colored Toad is using it.
MKDSEmblemToad.png Mario Kart: Double Dash!! A Mushroom with a red cap and white spots. Represents a Super Mushroom.
Donkey Kong Badge Mario Tennis The yellow letters "DK" with red and yellow borders, commonly on a red backdrop. Taken from Donkey Kong's initials as depicted on his red tie. Also matches with the "DK" symbol on DK Barrels, but with the colors inverted.
Sometimes, such as in Mario Tennis, this emblem's colors are inverted, matching the DK Barrels more closely. This emblem is also used for the DK Spaces from the Mario Party series.
Wario Badge Mario Tennis An indigo letter "W". Taken directly from the "W" insignia sewn on his yellow cap.

Koopa Troopa Badge Mario Power Tennis A stylized depiction of a Green Shell, worn by Koopa Troopas. Other color variants of Koopa Troopas use their shells' color variant as their emblem.

Used for Diddy Kong's Power-Up Band at Super Nintendo World (though his original emblem is used for the strap).
