The Tower of London is a famous historic site in London that houses a collection of the Crown Jewels. The castle has made several notable appearances in the Super Mario franchise in games that feature London.

History

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show

Although the actual Tower of London does not appear in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, the episode "The Adventures of Sherlock Mario" takes place in the fictional city of Victoria, which is largely inspired by Victorian London and features the Tower of Victoria, based on the Tower of London.

Mario is Missing!

During the events of the PC, SNES, and NES versions of Mario is Missing!, Bowser's Koopa Troopas stole the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London. Luigi has to search the Koopa Troopas in London for the Crown Jewels, and when he finds them, he has to return them to the Tower of London for a reward of 2,400 dollars.

Luigi must prove the jewels' authenticity by answering two of the following trivia questions:

  • One of the things the Tower of London was NOT used for was a:
    • prison
    • post office
    • mint
    • vault
  • Who ordered the building of the Tower of London?
    • William the Conqueror
    • Sir Barry the Builder
    • Henry the VIII
    • Mary, Queen of Scots

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games

Sonic and Tails stood in front of the Tower of London in Sonic Arrives

The Tower of London appears in both versions of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. In the Wii version, the tower only appears on the London Party map, though in the Nintendo 3DS version it appears as the setting for several Story Mode episodes. It first appears as the main location in Sonic Arrives, in which Sonic and Tails go sightseeing and encounter red Phantasmal Fog there, along with imposters of Mario and Luigi, and once again in The Ghostly Tower, where Sonic and Tails defeat King Boo and the Boo who are guarding the fog machine and clear the fog from the area. The episode Bowser's Blues also begins by the Tower of London, where Bowser is sightseeing with Goomba, Magikoopa and Lakitu, the latter of which mistakes the Tower of London for Big Ben. It also appears in the background of the episodes Enter Bowser?! and Junior, Super Hero?, which primarily take place on Tower Bridge.

Mario Kart series

The Tower of London appears in Mario Kart Tour as part of the London Loop and London Loop 3 courses, where racers drive around it whilst avoiding a Chain Chomp. In the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass rendition of Tour London Loop, the Tower of London appears on the first and third laps.

Pamphlet information from Mario is Missing!

William the Conquerer built the Tower of London for several reasons: to protect London from invasion, to oversee shipping on the Thames, and to scare his subjects. The original tower was built around 1078. It covers 7 hectares on the banks of the Thames River. At various times The Tower has been a mint, a fortress, a vault, a terrible jail and a place of execution! Famous as a showplace for England's elaborate Crown Jewels, the Jewel House includes the largest cut diamond in the world, 530 carats!
