“Carnival is Rio's biggest party. Like New Orleans' Mardi Gras, Carnival Rio is a period of feasting and festival just before Lent in early spring. With an emphasis on costume and dancing, a giant parade moves up the city's main street, Avenida Presidente Vargas, and lasts far into the night or the next day. Outrageous hats and headdresses are a festival favorite, as each partygoer tries to out-do the others. Samba, the national music and dance of Brazil, is a main ingredient of the holiday celebration.”

The Carnival appears in the PC version of Mario is Missing! It is the place where a Koopa stole the carnival headdress, forcing it to close until Luigi returns the headdress. After Luigi returns it, the Curator grants him the reward and reopens the Carnival.

To prove the headdress's authenticity, Luigi must answer two of the following questions:

  • What is the New Orleans counterpart to Carnival?
    • Mardi Gras
    • New Years Eve
    • The Super Bowl
    • Disney World
  • Carnival is always held around what important religious time?
    • Lent
    • New Year's Eve
    • Groundhog Day
    • Christmas Day
  • In Rio, Carnival is celebrated as a:
    • feast
    • parade
    • clambake
    • soccer game

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[edit]

In the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, floats from the Carnival can arrive in Copacabana Beach after a tournament is played. While this is occurring, characters on the floats can be challenged to obtain a part of their costume for the player's Mii.

In the Nintendo 3DS version, the Carnival appears at the end of the Road to Rio mode, taking place in the Sambódromo.
