“The Netherlands (which used to be called Holland), has been famous as a flower-growing center since the 17th century. When most people think of Holland they automatically think of tulips. The Aalsmeer Flower Auction, just outside Amsterdam, is the heart of the European florist trade. Six days a week, vendors gather there to bid for hundreds of different types of flowers. A gigantic clock showing the prices starts high and is gradually lowered. The first vendor to push a button and stop the clock owns that particular lot of flowers for the price shown.”
