“Known as futebol in Brazil, soccer was introduced to Rio around the turn of the century by a Brazilian schooled in England. The game became an instant success. The Rio Futebol League was formed in 1906 and today Brazil has one of the world's best soccer teams. Its star was Pele, perhaps the greatest player of all time. The traditional opening game of the season is held at the huge Maracana stadium, built in 1950 with room for 200,00. The game features the Flamingoes versus the Fluminese, and is called the Fla-Flu game.”

In the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Football takes place at Maracanã Stadium (known in the game as Maracanã). A sand sculpture of it is located at the center of Copacabana Beach. Orbot and Cubot can be found here, and speaking to them will allow the player to play single-player and multiplayer Single Matches, respectively. In the 3DS version, it remains the setting for Football as well as Football Plus.
