They generally inhabit similarly cold climates. Frost Piranhas most commonly appear in the Paper Mario series.

Frost Piranhas are a sub-species of Piranha Plants that first appeared in Paper Mario. Frost Piranhas are larger than the average Piranha Plants and instead of a red coloration the are a sky blue color. Mario first encountered Frost Piranhas while on his way to Starborn Valley, along with being exceptionally strong Frost Piranhas had the ability to shoot sub-zero blasts of breath. Frost Piranhas were later encountered on Shiver Mountain where they were less abundant.

Frost Piranhas reappear in Paper Mario's sequel Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, here they appear on the way Fahr Outpost and were slightly stronger than before, but noticeably lacking their ice breath ability. Like their Paper Mario counterparts, they can burrow underground and pop up to attack.

Frost Piranhas are enemies in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, where they, like Putrid Piranhas, are now depicted as Pale Piranha recolors and as such are now normal-sized and upward-facing, preventing jump attacks against them. They can be found on the Path to Fahr Outpost and are slightly stronger than previously. They no longer have their icy breath attack, but their bites can freeze Mario or his partners if not guarded against. In the Nintendo Switch remake, Frost Piranhas regain their icy breath attack, which targets both Mario and his partner at once and can freeze them, though their bite attack no longer inflicts freeze. Just like before, Frost Piranhas are unaffected by ice-based attacks, which even restores their HP, but are weak to fire-based ones. They and the Ice Puffs are the only ice-themed enemies in the game.

Frost Piranhas (also known as Ice Piranha Plants)[1] are a type of Piranha Plant with a freezing bite and icy breath. They generally inhabit similarly cold climates. Frost Piranhas most commonly appear in the Paper Mario series.

History[edit]

Paper Mario series[edit]

Paper Mario[edit]

Frost Piranhas first appear in Paper Mario. They are visually blue recolors of the game's Putrid Piranhas, and as such are larger than normal Piranha Plants and face the side, allowing them to be jumped on. Like all normal enemy Piranha Plants in the game, they burrow underground and spout up to attack. Mario first encounters Frost Piranhas while on his way to Starborn Valley. Along with being exceptionally strong, they have the ability to shoot icy blasts of breath that can freeze Mario and his allies (although the blasts themselves will not hurt them). Frost Piranhas are unaffected by ice-based attacks, though are weak to fire-based ones. Frost Piranhas are later encountered on Shiver Mountain, where they are less abundant.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

Super Paper Mario[edit]

Frost Piranhas return in Super Paper Mario, where they are found in The Underwhere. This time their stalk is green like normal Piranha Plants instead of blue, and they are only found popping out of Warp Pipes. They can attack by breathing an ice gust. Frost Piranhas sometimes drop an Ice Storm if defeated.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Frost Piranhas[2] appear in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and their Nintendo Switch port, making them the only Paper Mario enemy to cross into the New Super Mario Bros. games. They look and act similarly to Fire Piranha Plants, but shoot ice balls, which are capable of freezing playable characters as well as other enemies, similarly to Ice Bros. Additionally, Yoshi can eat their ice balls and spit them at other enemies. In New Super Mario Bros. U, Frost Piranhas inhabit the world of Rock-Candy Mines, where three of them appear in the level Fuzzy Clifftop, with two in a Warp Pipe and one on the ceiling, and in New Super Luigi U, Frost Piranhas appear in Broozers and Barrels.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Frost Piranha is mentioned briefly by Viridi during Palutena's Guidance dialogue for Piranha Plant in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
