A Frost Piranha, also known as Ice Piranha Plants[1] is a large, sky-blue colored Piranha Plant variety with a freezing bite and icy breath, first found in the Paper Mario series of games.

History

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario

Frost Piranhas first appeared in Paper Mario. They are larger than the average Piranha Plants and are a sky-blue color. Mario first encountered Frost Piranhas while on his way to Starborn Valley. Along with being exceptionally strong, they had the ability to shoot icy blasts of breath that can freeze Mario and his allies (although the blasts themselves won't hurt them). Frost Piranhas were later encountered on Shiver Mountain where they were less abundant.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Frost Piranhas reappear in Paper Mario's sequel Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. They can be found on the way to Fahr Outpost and were slightly stronger than before, but noticeably lacking their ice-breath ability. However, their bite could still freeze Mario or his partners if they did not perform a Guard move. Like their Paper Mario counterparts, they can burrow underground and pop up to attack. Unlike in the previous game, they cannot be jumped on in battle.

Super Paper Mario

Frost Piranhas return in Super Paper Mario, where they are found in The Underwhere. This time their stalk is green like normal Piranha Plants instead of blue, and they are only found popping out of Warp Pipes, breathing ice breath to enemies who get too close. They sometimes drop an Ice Storm if defeated.

Super Mario series

New Super Mario Bros. U

Ice Piranha Plants make their appearance in New Super Mario Bros. U, marking their first appearance outside of the Paper Mario series. They act similar to Fire Piranha Plants and their appearance in Super Paper Mario, but shoot Ice Balls, which are capable of freezing playable characters as well as other enemies, similar to Ice Bros. They inhabit the world of Rock-Candy Mines, where three of them appear in the level Fuzzy Clifftop, with two in a Warp Pipe and one on the ceiling. Additionally, Yoshi can eat their Ice Balls and spit them at other enemies.

New Super Luigi U

Ice Piranha Plants reappear in New Super Luigi U. In this game, they appear in the level Broozers and Barrels in Frosted Glacier.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, one of Piranha Plant's alternate color schemes is based on a Frost Piranha, but the stalk is yellow and the hand leaves are yellow and green. Also, it is mentioned briefly by Viridi during Palutena's Guidance dialogue for Piranha Plant.
