- “Roses are red, violets are blue, never forget, what I say to you. Timing is vital, aim must be true, measure the angle and win, do!”
- —Message Block, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Message Blocks are blocks that provide tips and hints to player characters in various platforming titles of the Super Mario franchise.
History[edit]
Super Mario World / Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]
Message Blocks[1] first appear in Super Mario World and return in its reissue. From their Tourist Tips, Message Blocks usually describe a new level at the start. They are designed as blue blocks with an orange speaker on each.
Mario's Time Machine[edit]
The NES version of Mario's Time Machine has similar hint-providing blocks known as information boxes[2] (or info boxes[2]).
Yoshi's Island series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]
Message Blocks (also named Messages[3] and Information Blocks[4]) appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its reissue to teach the player controls and give tips. This game codified their design as being a white block with a smiley facial expression and yellow cheeks.
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
Message Blocks[5] (also named Hint Blocks[6]) are the same in Yoshi Island DS as the previous game.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
- Main article: List of Yoshi's New Island Message Block hints
Message Blocks return in Yoshi's New Island. Their instructions depend on the control type used, whether it is traditional button-style egg-throwing or gyro tilt to aim. Some Message Block hints appear when an event first occurs, like Baby Mario going off of Yoshi's back. Message Blocks can also explain new level features, such as ground-pounding Tatami Block.
Yoshi's Story[edit]
In Yoshi's Story, Message Blocks (or Message Boxes[7]) have the exact same role as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They were made a lot bigger, and their mouths continually move.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
Message Blocks, or face blocks,[8] appear in Super Smash Bros. as part of the stage Yoshi's Island, where two appear in the background with the Super Happy Tree. They retain this appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong[edit]
There are Help Boxes[9] in Mario vs. Donkey Kong that work similarly to Message Blocks and give hints when hit from any side. They are black boxes with the word "HELP" and a question mark written in white. They appear in several levels, and show how to perform Mario's moves. In the European release, all languages other than English depict the Help Boxes as black boxes with only a white question mark.
In the game's remake, the box has a lavender outline and now features a question mark in the modern Super Mario typeface across all regions. Help Boxes are not present within Time Attack mode.
Super Princess Peach[edit]
Blocks functioning similarly to Message Blocks appear in Super Princess Peach. They are referred to as "kassarbrock" in their internal file names, which is Japanese for "Perry Block". They are yellow and blue, resembling Perry. These blocks can be hit from any side, and they always appear in every boss level before the pipe, warning the player about the boss and giving tips on how to defeat it.
Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
Only five Message Blocks appear in Yoshi's Woolly World, with three in the first level and two in the third. They retain the appearance from Yoshi's Island DS; however, their mouths now continually move, like in Yoshi's Story. Their cheeks are pink this time.
Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]
Message Blocks return in Yoshi's Crafted World, behaving exactly the same as in past appearances.
Unused appearances[edit]
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
The Message Block as seen in Super Mario World appears in concept art for the Jaxi in Super Mario Odyssey, where it is part of the bus stop.
