Expert is an extra world in Mario vs. Donkey Kong and its Nintendo Switch remake, featuring more challenging Expert Levels[1] where the player needs to find a key and bring it to the door to complete them. The first half of levels typically feature themes from all the regular worlds, and the second half features themes from the Plus worlds. While the original Game Boy Advance version featured all Expert levels in one page, the Nintendo Switch version splits them into two pages (EX1 and EX2), but are otherwise considered the same world.
Expert is unlocked after completing vs. Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong Plus in the original Mario vs. Donkey Kong), and Time Attack is also unlocked for those levels as well in the remake. Each level must be unlocked by collecting gold stars (earning a "Perfect!" rating in the remake or attaining a target score in the original version) from various levels, with 128 (90 in the original) stars required to unlock all of them.
Gold stars cannot obtained in these levels in the original game due to them having no target high scores. However, this was changed in the remake, as stars can now be attained based on how many presents the player has obtained. This also means this world is also now required for full completion of the player's savefile, as collecting all stars including those from Expert levels will mark the file with a gold medal.
In the original version of the game, the bonus game cannot be played even after collecting all the presents in each of these levels. Similarly, the remake does not feature any bonus levels corresponding to this world. If enough levels are completed in EX1, the bonus level in Mario Toy Company will unlock instead, and the same will occur with EX2 and the bonus level in Donkey Kong Jungle.
