Badges are items used in several Mario role-playing games ever since their first appearance in Paper Mario. They are also seen in the crossover game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Badges are equipped as accessories, similar to the weapons, armors and accessories from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. The main difference is that, unlike the items in Super Mario RPG, Badges have a variety of uses depending on the game. They may increase stats, provide unusual abilities, or give characters access to new moves.
History
Paper Mario series
Each badge requires a certain amount of BP to be equipped, which means that Mario cannot equip all the badges at the same time. The more useful a badge, the more BP it requires. Instead of changing Mario's stats, badges have many uses, from prolonging Mario's Spin Dash to changing the sound effects of Mario's hammer and jump attacks. Some badges also allow Mario to use special attacks with the hammer and shoes that use FP.
Paper Mario
In Paper Mario badges can be found scattered in all the Mushroom Kingdom, but some particular badges can be only bought from Rowf in Toad Town and from Merlow in exchange for Star Pieces.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, badges can instead be bought from the Lovely Howz of Badges in Rogueport. They can be traded for Star Pieces with Dazzle in Rogueport Sewers. Ms. Mowz can steal badges from enemies and enemies also occasionally drop badges when defeated.
Super Paper Mario
Super Paper Mario eliminated the use of badges, as there was no RPG-style battling system. There are, however, two items that were badges in the past games: Power Plus and HP Plus. They retain their main purposes: Power Plus boosts the character's attack power by one, and HP Plus boosts the character's maximum Heart Points by five. Unlike the badges seen in the first two Paper Mario games, the effects of these items in Super Paper Mario are permanent. The Happy Flower, albeit distinctly different from its badge form, also appears in Super Paper Mario as an item.
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, each bro can only wear one badge at a time. Badges are used to raise Mario or Luigi's Attack stat or their Bros. Points. Certain badges also allow different effects to be used in battle, such as defense from spiked enemies, HP recovery, and attacks with different effects, among others. In the game, badges can be bought in shops all around the Beanbean Kingdom or dropped from defeated enemies.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Badges only give special effects to Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi. Clothing instead increases and decreases all the stats in this game. Badges can be found all around the Mushroom Kingdom of the past, dropped by enemies, in the present Kingdom's Item Shop, or bought from Fawful. Like the game's predecessor, only one badge can be given to each bro at a time.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Items known as Bros. Badges appear in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, in which they are used in battle by Mario and Luigi (but not Bowser). The first two badges are given to the player by Princess Lipid in the Flab Zone. When a gauge fills up, touching the two linked badges with the stylus activates the badge, yielding a variety of results, such as restoring health. The gauge is filled up by performing an attack in either a "GOOD", "GREAT" or "EXCELLENT" way (the requirements vary from badge to badge). Switching a badge during a battle will reset the gauge to zero. Some badges can be purchased at a shop in Toad Town and others can be found throughout the game.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Badges also reappear in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Both Mario and Luigi can each have one equipped. During battle, a Badge Meter on the bottom screen will fill up as the Mario Bros. attack. When the two badges meet at any point on the meter, one on the circles on the bottom screen will show an icon. Touching the icon will do an action depending on what two badges are combined.
List of Badges
Paper Mario series Badges
Badges can be obtained in a multitude of ways in the Paper Mario series. Most badges provide a special attack for Mario and consume BP (Badge Points) when equipped.
Paper Mario
There are sixty-nine badges in Paper Mario, but some appear more than once, making a total of 80 badges.

Unused Badges of Paper Mario
- Main article: List of Paper Mario beta elements § Unused Badges
Badge Number | Japanese Name | Name of Badge | Icon | BP Needed | Effect/Description |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
0 hamma chāji zero Hammer Charge 0 |
File:A - unused smash charge.PNG | 1 | Uses 1 FP. Increases Mario's hammer attack by 1. Name, appearance, and effect suggest this would be obtained before Smash Charge. | |
0 jan chāji zero Jump Charge 0 |
File:A - unused jump charge.PNG | 1 | Uses 1 FP. Increases Mario's jump attack by 1. Name, appearance, and effect suggest this would be obtained before Jump Charge. | |
0101 | イカリノパワー ikari no pawā Anger's Power |
File:A - unused mad.PNG File:Paper Mario Badge 0x0101 Effect.gif |
8 | Causes Mario to assume a dark red tinge and angry pose during battles. Mario's portion of each turn is controlled by the CPU. The partner is controlled by the player. Mario's attack increases by 2, but his AI is quite rudimentary (enough so that he will jump on spiked enemies). Effects are much like the "berserk" status from other RPGs. | |
Right On! | File:PAPER MARIO BETA BADGE 0102.png |
8 | Activates all action commands perfectly and automatically. Causes a Japanese sign (バッチリ bacchiri, which means perfect or right on the mark) to appear over the description of the action command. Note that it works for Mario, but not his partner. |
File:A - unused ultra jump.PNG | 1 | Uses two FP to execute a standard jump attack perfectly. | |
File:A - unused Ultra Smash.PNG | 1 | Uses two FP to execute a standard hammer attack perfectly. | |
File:A - unused Happy Heart.PNG | 10 | Like Happy Heart, but recovers three HP every turn instead of one. | |
File:A - unused HP drain.PNG | 10 | Recovers more HP per hit than HP Drain, exact amount unclear. Possibly two HP per hit, up to a max of 5. Reduces attack power by 2 | |
0118 | オートツギツギー ōto tsugitsugī Auto (Attack) in Succession |
File:A - unused Multibounce.PNG | 2 | Uses 5 FP, has the same effect as Multibounce, but no action command is required. | |
File:A - unused Lucky Day.PNG | 10 | Reduces the FP consumed by every move by 2. It won't make a move free. Note that it stacks on top of the 2 Flower Saver badges. | |
File:A - unused Mega Power Bounce.PNG | 2 | Uses 4 FP to do 4, 5, or 6 damage to 1 enemy, depending on which set of boots Mario has. The action command, which is the normal jump action command, increases damage by 1. Apperance suggests the badge would "belong" between Power Jump and Mega Jump (having three spikes on the bottom, whereas the others have two and four). | |
File:A - unused D down smash.PNG | 2 | Uses 4 FP to do 4, 5, or 6 damage to 1 enemy, depending on which hammer Mario has. The action command, which is the normal hammer action command, increases damage by 1. | |
Power Smash/Mega Smash | File:PAPER MARIO BETA BADGE 00EA.png | 3 | Called Power Smash in the field, Mega Smash in battle. Uses six FP to do Mega Smash. Its in-game description changes to match its name... |
Power Smash/Mega Smash | File:PAPER MARIO BETA BADGE 00EA.png | 3 | Identical to badge #127? |
File:A - unused deep focus.PNG | 5 | Appears to be a different design for Deep Focus. It seems to function exactly like Deep Focus. For some reason, when the Deep Focus badge is revealed from the red ? Block in front of Bowser's Castle, it uses this design. When collected, however, the design is reverted to normal. | |
Shrink Smash | File:A - unused shrink smash.PNG | 1 | Uses 2 FP to create a hammer-based Shrink Stomp. Its description, notably, says it uses only 1 FP. |
File:PAPER MARIO BETA BADGE 00EA.png | 3 | Uses 6 FP to execute a normal(?) hammer attack. | |
File:PAPER MARIO BETA BADGE 012D.png | 0 | Effect unknown. Possibly not a badge. | |
File:A - unused Dizzy Jump.PNG | 2 | Uses 2 FP. "(NOT USED ANY LONGER!)" appears at the bottom of the screen in place of an action command. Mario jumps up and down repeatedly in the center of the enemy side of the field. All ground enemies are hit for 1 damage each time he lands. The player must press A every time Mario hits the ground to keep him jumping and racking up damage. | |
F pikkyorōn efu Pikkyorōn F |
Attack FX F | File:Attack fx F badge.PNG | 0 | Changes the sound effects from Mario's hammer and jump attacks. The sound effect is the laughter of flowers in Forever Forest. |

F pikkyorōn efu Pikkyorōn F |
Attack FX F | File:Attack fx F badge.PNG | 0 | Same as badge #149 |
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Notes: Badges that have a "P" at the end of their names are identical to their non-"P" counterparts but affect Mario's partner. Equipping more then one of the same attack badge increases the attack's power by 1 and/or increases the duration of the applied status effect by 1. Zap Tap | File:Zaptap.gif | 3 | Pit of 100 Trials (Lvl 30) | Electrifies Mario, causing most enemies to take 1 damage when they physically touch him. Prevents HP-leeching attacks as well as allowing Mario to safely jump on electrified enemies without getting hurt. Bandits cannot swipe Mario's belongings if Mario wears this badge. |
1 - The effect of P-Down D-Up and P-Down D-Up P is capable of reducing the damage of piercing attacks, whereas even Defend Plus can't protect against such an attack.
2 - Like other piercing attacks, Iron Clefts are immune to this.
3 - There is a common misconception that the Feeling Fine badges have an effect on Poison Shrooms. In reality, all they do is stop the user from being poisoned. There is a slight chance that the user will not be poisoned or lose half HP, but instead will be fully healed. This is simply a random occurrence; wearing these badges makes no difference. This has been proven by extensive testing.
4 - All badges that can be stolen from an enemy can also be dropped after battle; the reverse is not true.
