A scientist appears in Mario is Missing! as a helpful character in every country visited by Luigi. When interacted with, the scientist either hints on the location Luigi is traveling to or tells about an artifact that Luigi is holding. In PC versions only, he can also state the cardinal or ordinal directions of the Koopa's location. The scientist is an elderly man wearing typical scientist attire like a lab coat and safety glasses, though the NES version depicts him as a young adult man.
