Kat & Ana, WarioWare: Touched!

Kat and Ana are major human characters in the WarioWare series. They are ninja twin sisters who attend Diamond City Kindergarten and adore nature, especially animals and flowers. Their house is located in a park in Diamond City. Their names are a pun on the word "katana", a type of Japanese samurai sword. They debut in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! as two of Wario's friends who help him produce microgames.

History

Background

Kat & Ana share information about themselves and their family in their diary at the official WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ Japanese website.[3] They come from a family of ninjas, named the Iga Clan, which greatly inspires them to practice ninjutsu since childhood and become ninjas themselves when they grow up. Kat & Ana's father left his parents' house when he was a kindergartner to seclude himself in the mountains and develop his self-discipline. Kat & Ana planned to do the same, but abandoned the idea after playing a game of living by themselves for a while. However, Kat still expresses her resolve to go through this training.

WarioWare series

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!

Kat & Ana are introduced in the opening cutscene of WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, in which Wario invites them and other friends of his to join his company WarioWare, Inc. as game developers.

Scene from the prologue of Kat & Ana: Boneheads standing on the roof of the Castle has possessed the prince and has also caught Ana.
The evil spirit Boneheads has possessed the prince and caught Ana.

In Kat & Ana's story, a villainous skeleton spirit named Boneheads appears over the Castle in Diamond City at night. He takes possession of the prince or princess who sleeps under the roof. Ana appears along with her crew consisting of five other ninjas to save them. They attack Boneheads, but he easily defeats all of them with his two lengthy swords. Because of her defeat, she assigns her animal companion Don the Sparrow to carry a letter calling for help to her sister Kat. After he flies off, Boneheads also captures Ana and ties her in a rope.

Kat resides with Paw the Dog at an unknown place far away from Diamond City. Don the Sparrow arrives as she steps out of the house, and he drops the letter in front of her. Shortly after, Kat hears Ana's crying and heads for Diamond City with Paw. On their way, they travel across various Japanese landscapes.

The player in Kat & Ana's stage in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
Kat & Ana's quest is over.

When Kat and Paw arrive at the Castle, they encounter Boneheads at the entrance, who then jumps to the roof. Kat and Paw make it through the many floors of the Castle and eventually reach the roof. Kat battles him, but fails to defeat him, so Paw joins the fight and morphs into a giant blade. With the help of Paw, Kat finally defeats Boneheads after some effective slices and causes him to fall apart. The prince/princess is saved from Boneheads' influence and Kat rescues Ana by cutting her rope. Afterwards, Kat, Ana, and the prince/princess stand in front of the castle while Paw chases Don. The two then walk to the Gelateria where they sit on the store's awning. In the stage's intermission, Kat unsheathes a hanami dango, rose, or lollipop.

In the epilogue to Wario's second story, Kat & Ana are with the other WarioWare Inc. employees to confront Wario about their lack of payment. They stand in shock when Wario runs away.

Kat & Ana's microgames are themed after nature, and thus all of them feature animals or plant life in some way. The song Four Seasons plays throughout their stage.

In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, Kat & Ana created microgames of the Nature genre. All games involve animals or plants.

In the unlockable minigame Jump Forever, Kat & Ana swing the rope that Wario has to jump. In the unlockable minigame taken from Mario Paint, Fly Swatter, the Bob-omb appearing in the congratulations sequence has been replaced by Kat.

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!

In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!, Kat & Ana perform in a television show called Super Show after 9-Volt's entrance. Under the headline "Karate", they show off their ninja techniques. However, what occurs next is unknown, because Wario's television set bursts.

Kat & Ana's nature microgames return, and they are two of the ten selectable characters in the multiplayer games. Their minigame is called Wobbly Bobbly, where players each try to balance on a stack of upside-down turtles while playing microgames.

WarioWare: Twisted!

In WarioWare: Twisted!, Kat & Ana go on a field trip with their kindergarten class on the Diamond Knoll. Their pets, Shadow the Dog and Shuriken the Falcon, come along with Kat & Ana. The teacher instructs the children not to bunk. During the trip, Ana discovers a beautiful flower. While Kat takes a stroll, she and her two animal friends pause at the flower. Ana decides to show the flower to Kat and chases after her. However, Kat damages a beehive with a stick when she arrives. The bees get furious for being disturbed, so Kat & Ana sprint away from the swarm. They abscond into a wooden cabin and rest there for a moment.

However, Kat & Ana are not alone. They encounter the Diamond Troll. He immediately prepares his attack, so Kat & Ana quickly change to their ninja uniforms and attack him with their swords. Then, Kat & Ana charge their blades and shoot out a sword beam at the Diamond Troll. Shortly before they can attack, Shadow the Dog and Shuriken the Falcon crash right into the cabin and hit the ceiling. Then, they plummet into the Diamond Troll and all three are knocked out. Kat & Ana are speechless for a moment.

Following these events, Kat & Ana decide to return back home, but after they open the door of the cabin, the swarm of bees reappear. The two ninja sisters and their animal pals escape from the swarm in front of the sunset.

In Wario-Man's story, the alien Orbulon gives Kat, Ana, Mona, 9-Volt, and 18-Volt a flight in his new UFO. All five humans sit on seats behind Orbulon.

In WarioWare: Twisted!, Kat & Ana's microgames involve a particular style of gameplay rather than a specific visual theme. In this game, their set of microgames is called Tap Out and requires to press only A Button.

WarioWare: Touched!

Scene from the prologue of Kat & Ana: Upper screen: The banana thief Numchuck the Monkey on the roof of Kat & Ana's House. Lower screen: Ana is shocked because her bananas are missing.
Kat & Ana remark on the monkey after they find it stealing their bananas.

Ana and Shadow the Dog stay in their house in WarioWare: Touched! Ana wants to eat bananas, so she opens the door to the room where the bananas should lie on a dish. She is shocked when she notices that the bananas are gone, and hectically searches the room. During this, Shadow the Dog notices animal footprints in the house. He informs Ana of the tracks by barking. She now also notices the tracks and sets off to find the banana thief. Before heading out, Ana writes a note for Kat so that she can know where to find her. Ana and Shadow the Dog dash out the door to chase after the culprit. Kat reads the note and catches up to her to retrieve the stolen bananas with Shuriken the Falcon.

Kat & Ana eventually capture the thief, who turns out to be a small monkey. They are initially angered, but the monkey quickly endears them, and they name him Numchuck. Kat & Ana cheerfully lift the monkey up and down and the thievery is quickly forgotten.

In WarioWare: Touched!, the name of Kat & Ana's set of microgames is Ninja Scribble and involves scribbling and drawing with Stylus.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves

Scene from the prologue of Kat & Ana: Kat and Ana come to the Diamond Dojo's rescue because the Elephant Ogre appeared.
Kat & Ana come to the Diamond Dojo's rescue.

In WarioWare: Smooth Moves, the gargantuan, red Elephant Ogre comes to Diamond Dojo and stands in front of it at night. The concerned Sensei in the Dojo faces the monstrous being who suddenly lets out a piercing shriek. Quickly, Kat & Ana come to the Dojo's rescue. Ana gets inside the Dojo to reach the Sensei. When she arrives, she notices the Li'l Ogre bugging the Sensei and yanking his hair. Outside, Kat battles face to face with the Elephant Ogre. She activates her clone powers and five duplicates appear simultaneously, in which the clones immediately attack the giant with their swords. The Elephant Ogre's club and Kat's sword press each other, but then the Li'l Ogre shouts to stop the fight.

Scene from the epilogue of Kat & Ana: The Elephant Ogre leaves with the assumed Li'l Ogre on his hand (who is actually Ana).
The Elephant Ogre leaves with the assumed Li'l Ogre on his hand.

It turns out that the Elephant Ogre has just been searching for the Li'l Ogre, probably his child. With the Li'l Ogre on his hand, the Elephant Ogre peaceably leaves during the sunrise. Kat waves to say goodbye, but she suddenly notices that the actual Li'l Ogre is still there. The silhouette on the Elephant Ogre's hand is actually Ana. She desperately waves with her arms and cries.

Kat & Ana briefly appear in Tiny Wario's ending cutscene, where Wario runs past the WarioWare, Inc. crew as he is chased by the Splunks.

In WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Kat & Ana's set of microgames involves the forms The Remote Control, The Sketch Artist, The Chauffeur, and The Samurai.

Kat & Ana also work as editors of Wario's one-shot newspaper, "The Weekly Wario". They write about rumors involving the Form Baton.

WarioWare: Snapped!

In WarioWare: Snapped!, Kat & Ana run the newly opened Wario Park along with Wario, Mona, and Jimmy T. All of their microgames in this game require two players. Completing their microgames make them remark on how close the players are, just like them. They also wear pink boots with purple socks along with Mona, but Mona wears green boots and light blue socks.

After the end of their stage, photos of the two players with goofy decorations are shown. In Jimmy T.'s stage, a comic strip of them can be shown. In this comic, they have a fighting practice.

WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase

Kat & Ana soaring through the sky.

In WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase, Kat & Ana have their very own stage called "Kat & Ana's Sky Patrol". In this stage, they jump off a cliff first only to fly above the sky using yellow capes in a fashion similar to Cape Mario and Cape Luigi. They are accompanied by birds (to denote the player's 4 lives for the stage).

In WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase, Kat & Ana return to their original role and host a new set of Nature-themed microgames again. Unlike the original WarioWare which featured microgames about animals and flowers, the microgames in this set for the game are limited to only animals.

Game & Wario

A Patchwork cutscene

Kat & Ana appear in Game & Wario, where they host the Patchwork minigame. In the minigame's introduction, Kat and Ana are seen slicing rolls of colorful fabric with their sword in order to make different patchworks like flowers and a horse.

Kat also appears as depicted on a bowling pin in the Bowling minigame with the other characters.

Kat & Ana also appear in the Miiverse Sketch Masterpiece Collection series, a series showcasing pictures of often questionable quality made in the game's Miiverse Sketch mode. Kat appears as the host of the fifteenth episode themed around turtles, while Ana is the host of the second episode themed around peacocks.

WarioWare Gold

Kat & Ana hugging about their eating challenge.

Kat & Ana first appear in WarioWare Gold accepting Wario's offer to make games for him for the Wario Bowl, in which they host the second stage of the Touch League with a That's Life theme.

In their own story, the twins arrive at Diamond City Castle to find their teacher for a ninja test in hopes of getting their ninja learners permits. They encounter Ms. Munchly who they believe to be their teacher, who tells them that their test is to eat everything she dishes out to them, much to the twin's excitement. After eating numerous amounts of sushi, it is revealed that they completed the Gourmet Master test; their ninja test was right next door and their real teacher, Ninja Steve, was in the bathroom during their feast. Though full from eating, Kat & Ana join Steve to complete their real test.

They are later seen as part of the Dancing Team, dancing at Club Joe with Jimmy T, Mona, Dr. Crygor, Mike, Penny, Young Cricket, Master Mantis, and Fronk. They bring a large amount of food that attracts several customers to the club.

At the end of the story, Kat & Ana are among the group who demand their part of the money Wario made from the Wario Bowl. After Wario accidentally lets the briefcase with the tournament money fall off from his hands, Kat becomes disappointed to find out that the money Wario had with him was actually very little, with Ana deducing that Wario had probably spent most of it beforehand. They later gladly split the rest of the money with their friends.

Unlike in previous games, Kat & Ana have brown eyes instead of blue.

WarioWare: Get It Together!

Kat & Ana facing Leo
Kat & Ana facing Leo.

Kat & Ana appear in WarioWare: Get It Together! In the game's story mode, the duo appears in the opening cutscene, eating food alongside Lulu. When Wario announces the completion of his new game, Kat & Ana become eager to see the finished product. However, Wario's console malfunctions, causing Kat to believe that something is wrong with the game. Wario tosses his console upwards in frustration, which sucks Kat & Ana, along with the rest of the WarioWare, Inc. employees, into the game world.

Their stage is the Nature stage, which is available after the Remix stage is completed. In the pre-stage cutscene, Wario and co. find Kat & Ana in front of their stage. The gang notices their constant jumping, and the ninjas state that they are unable to control their movement (although Kat believes that it is due to their abilities as ninjas). Kat states that she and Ana have seen a game bug enter their level, and enlists the gang to assist them in exterminating it.

In their story, a mysterious ninja named Leo arrives at Sleepytown Village and casts a Puppetry spell on the animals of the village, who go rogue and wreak havoc on the villagers. Soon after, Kat & Ana arrive and fight back with a Nap Time spell, clearing one of the animals of its spell. Leo commands the rogue animals to force the twins into the nearby jungle, where they attack Leo with their shurikens. Leo quickly evades their attacks, and casts a Lion's Roar spell, transforming himself into a lion. He then proceeds to escape into the jungle with the rogue animals. Without hesitation, Kat & Ana give chase. After their stage is cleared, the duo joins the gang, with Kat declaring the mission complete.

After beating Anything Goes, Kat & Ana go back to the real world alongside most of the other WarioWare Inc. employees and chase after Wario after it is revealed their predicament was caused by his poor programming. The twins berate Wario, who then remembers that other people were left behind in the game world. The gang immediately returns to rescue them.

Like Dribble & Spitz, Kat is controlled by Player 1 and Ana is controlled by Player 2; with the exception of the Variety Pack and select Wario Cup challenges, the player always controls Kat in single-player. As playable characters, Kat & Ana constantly jump, and can be moved left and right with Left Stick. Pressing A Button makes them throw a shuriken horizontally; Kat faces and throws shurikens to the right, and Ana faces and throws to the left. With these abilities, Kat & Ana can cover a large area of the screen and clear out many objects with their attacks (e.g. Witch! Which? and Apple Drop, two of the 6 games that are considered a good fit). However, these advantages are overshadowed by their many disadvantages. Because of their nature of constant movement, the player must time their movements to pass certain microgames without touching undesired objects (e.g. Rock Candy, Fishy Felines). The inability to control their vertical positions also means that it may be difficult for the player to land accurate hits with the projectiles, such as in Matching Masks, which is especially difficult for Kat herself, requiring the player to target the correct mask with near-perfect precision. Because of these disadvantages, Kat & Ana have 25 microgames that deem them a bad fit (the most out of any character, tied with 9-Volt), but a more balanced amount of microgames that deem them a below-average or average fit (70 and 79 respectively).

Kat & Ana are the only characters in WarioWare: Get It Together! to use a different pose than their default in the Break Room: they stand straight and face the screen instead of posing off to one side.

WarioWare: Move It!

Kat & Ana's cutscene in WarioWare: Move It!
Kat & Ana fighting off Cractus' plant army

Kat & Ana reappear in WarioWare: Move It!, where they join Wario along with the rest of the WarioWare Inc. crew to Caresaway Island. In their stage, "The Grand Parfait Adventure", Kat & Ana are shown looking at a brochure and find an ice-cream shop advertising a Caresaway Parfait. However, their map is stolen by Leo, causing them to chase after him in the nearby jungle. They find him perched on a branch, until it is revealed that the branch was actually Cractus, who eats Leo along with the parchment. Kat & Ana battle against Cractus and its plant monster army to get their parchment back. Eventually, the pair defeats Cractus, causing it to regurgitate the parchment. They quickly run to the ice-cream shop with it, leaving Leo behind as he was also regurgitated. Then, Kat & Ana gleefully looked at the Caresaway Parfait they ordered, and enjoy their treat together.

Remix 2's cutscene in WarioWare: Move It!
Cricket, Mantis and Kat & Ana balance on Poolopus' tentacle

Kat & Ana also appear in the second Remix stage, "Pool-Party Panic". They are shown playing with a ball alongside Young Cricket and Master Mantis, when Kat & Ana's combined attack on the ball causes it to get stuck in the mouth of Poolopus. The entire group tries to pull it out, but Poolopus awakens and becomes upset in the process, causing her to throw everyone into the air and onto a nearby tour bus. The tour bus eventually takes them back to the pool party, and they eagerly ask Poolopus to throw them again.

Kat & Ana appear again, along with the entire WarioWare crew, in the final stage, "Lava at First Sight", where Volcano Wario threatens the island. After Jimmy T volunteers to dance in order to calm the volcano down, Kat & Ana offer to help as well. Eventually, everyone defeats Volcano Wario and calms the volcano down, allowing the crew to continue with their vacation.

In WarioWare: Move It!, Kat & Ana's set of microgames involves the forms At Attention, Fashionista, and Hand Model.

Kat & Ana host a two-player mode called Switching Gears. Kat represents player 1, while Ana represents player 2. Both of them take turns between clearing microgames and keeping the microgame window open.

Kat & Ana also appear throughout the Super Smash Bros. series in the form of items. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, each of them have their own sticker, and they also appear together on a trophy. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, they are also featured in the form of a trophy. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kat & Ana are featured as a master spirit. In World of Light, Kat & Ana own their own dojo in The Light Realm, where they teach spirits the Ninja Style, which provides a major increase to movement speed, falling speed, and the power of grabs, throws and attacks with items, but decreases the power of regular attacks and special moves, and also decreases defense and weight.

General information

Physical appearance

Kat and Ana are kindergarteners who are ninjas. In the installments up to WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase, they have blue eyes and a slender build; in Game & Wario, they have solid black eyes. Since WarioWare Gold, they have their eyes brown, and possess a thicker build. Despite similar facial structures, their hair and facial features are different. Kat has pink hair with a straight-cut fringe that is tied up in an upright pointed ponytail held by a purple hairband, longer eyelashes, and angry eyebrows, compared to Ana who has her red-orange hair with messy fringe tied up into two large pointed pigtails, short eyelashes, and calmer eyebrows.

Kat and Ana are always depicted wearing scarves, tank tops, gauntlets, puffy shorts, and shoes; they also have yellow Japanese swords on their backs. Earlier installments have them wear socks and shoes, while later ones replace those with a pair of flats. In WarioWare Gold and later installments, the volume and length of Kat and Ana's shorts and scarves, respectively, has been exaggerated. Kat's ponytail holder, scarf, gauntlets, shorts, and socks are colored in magenta, while her top and shoes are blue; and vice versa for Ana. In WarioWare: Snapped!, they wear an exclusive pink uniform, which consists of a hat, dress, and boots, all of which have magenta accents; their ponytail holders, headsets, and bottoms are colored magenta.

Personality and abilities

Kat & Ana are often depicted of possessing surprising abilities; they have been seen cloning themselves, jumping higher than the average human can, and defeating enemies more than twice their size when working as a team. Many of these powers are classic ninja techniques. Despite this, Kat & Ana are also displayed as quite naïve. While Kat is usually portrayed as being more focused and mature, in WarioWare: Twisted! she disturbs a nest of bees without thinking things through. Kat acts bossy which sometimes results in making Ana cry, but she cares deeply for her. Ana is quieter and more cautious than her sister. Kat & Ana are said to love especially animals and flowers, respectively. In WarioWare Gold, they are shown to have big appetites and enjoy eating large amounts of food.

The sisters are good friends with 9-Volt, as revealed in their diary.[3] It is unknown how they became friends with Wario.

Portrayals

As an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Kat & Ana were voiced by Leslie Swan, who was a localization manager for Nintendo of America, and Sara Rades. While neither of them are listed in the voice credits of either game, the sound test in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U confirms them as the voice actress of the characters, though it does not specify who voices which character.[4]

In WarioWare Gold, Kat and Ana are respectively voiced by Stephanie Sheh and Fryda Wolff. They would reprise their roles in WarioWare: Get It Together! and WarioWare: Move It!.
