Somersault (Invincible Mario)
It has been suggested that this page be moved to Piroetta. Reason: Names in other languages are higher on the naming priority list than conjectural names (discuss) |
The title of this article is conjectural; an official name for the article's subject has not been found, so it has been given a fitting title by the editors.
If an acceptable name is found, then the article should be moved to the new title.

First appearance | Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988) |
Latest appearance | Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition (2024) |
Somersaults are a modified version of jumping performed by Invincible Mario and Rainbow Mario, replacing normal jumps and several variations of them. Somersaults improve the speed and range of jumping.
History
Super Mario Bros. 3
In Super Mario Bros. 3, Invincible Mario and Luigi perform somersaults whenever they jump. Being in Small or Frog form prevents somersaulting, as does holding items. When in Hammer form, they duck into the shell, similar to that form's crouch animation. The move improves jumping ability, but makes it much more difficult to enter upward pipes due to the increased speed and altered hitboxes.
New Super Mario Bros. series
The somersault returns in New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. 2. Small Mario is no longer prevented from somersaulting. It no longer hinders the ability to enter upward pipes. Variations of jumping, such as a Wall Jump, are also replaced by somersaults.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. U are similar, but these games also include Spin Jumping and Midair Spins. Spin Jumps are not replaced by somersaults. Midair Spins do not have their animation while somersaulting but using one still generates its sound effect and slows Mario's falling.
Super Mario Maker series
This section is a stub. Please consider expanding it to include any missing information. Specifics: Super Mario Maker 2
In Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, somersaulting can only be done in the Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros. U game styles, with all mechanics being inherited from the source games.
3D Super Mario games
The somersault makes its 3D debut in Super Mario Galaxy and reappears in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario 3D World, acting similar to previous games.
