Somersaults are a special type of jump performed by Invincible Mario (and Rainbow Mario), improving the speed and range of his trajectory.

History[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

In Super Mario Bros. 3, Invincible Mario and Luigi perform somersaults when jumping in any form other than Small or Frog form. When in Hammer form, they duck into the shell, similar to that form's crouch animation. The move improves jumping ability, but makes it much more difficult to enter upward pipes due to the increased speed and altered hitboxes.

New Super Mario Bros. series[edit]

The somersault returns in New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. 2, and New Super Mario Bros. U, where it now applies to every form, including Small form. It no longer hinders the ability to enter upward pipes.

3D Super Mario games[edit]

The somersault makes its 3D debut in Super Mario Galaxy and reappears in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario 3D World, acting similar to previous games.
