Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who is famous for his contributions to modern physics, most notably for formulating the theories of general relativity and special relativity that rationalized the laws of physics that govern the universe. His formula for mass–energy equivalence, E=mc^2, was first introduced in 1905 and became intrinsically linked with him.

Einstein appears in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode "9001: A Mario Odyssey", where he is referred to as Mr. Albert Einstein, or just Einstein, also nicknamed Al or the Einster. Here, he is a computer programmer who invented the HAL 9001 computer and pizza machine for Mario and Luigi. Although he is confident that the HAL 9001 is near-perfect, he is unable to predict the dire consequences that arise when he leaves the computer with the Mario Bros.

It is only when Einstein returns to Mario Brothers Plumbing that he discovers that HAL has malfunctioned, and is attempting to hypnotize the two plumbers. Einstein quickly unplugs all of HAL's cords, shutting the computer off and freeing Mario and Luigi.

Einstein tries to apologize for everything that HAL has done, including the pizzas (i.e. popcorn pizza) that have been prepared. Mario does not care, as he intends on eating the pizzas anyway.

Einstein is portrayed by Ed Metzger, who notably portrays Albert Einstein in the only show endorsed by Einstein's family, Albert Einstein: The Practical Bohemian, a one-man show written and produced by Metzger that portrays Einstein throughout his life.

In the NES release of Mario's Time Machine, Einstein is visited by Mario in a laboratory after Mario travels back in time to 1905 return his stolen Physics Equation, which holds Einstein's famous E=mc^2. If Mario talks to him, Einstein mentions how he was born in Germany in 1879 and moved to the United States of America in the 1930s (despite Mario having traveled back in time to 1905, when Einstein still lived in Germany).

Einstein is mentioned in 60-Byō Challenge! Luigi o Sukue!! There, he is one of the incorrect answers for the May 2, 2022 question about the Japanese giant salamander, "Who was the person who brought the Japanese giant salamander back to Europe from Japan?" The correct answer, meanwhile, is Philipp Franz von Siebold.
