Tiny (status effect)
- “Tiny! Attack power has now dropped!”
- —Battle text, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Tiny is a status ailment in the Paper Mario series and the Mario & Luigi series.
History
Paper Mario series
Paper Mario
In Paper Mario, Bzzaps! and Hammer Bros. have the ability to shrink Mario. When he is shrunken, his Attack Power drops by half. It is indicated by a pink, white, and green circle above Mario. Mario can also shrink enemies using the Shrink Stomp Badge and its associated move. Even though enemies are shrunken for between 2 and 4 turns by Shrink Stomp, it ends just before the enemy attacks on the last turn (when a "1" is displayed on the turn marker), so it actually lasts for 1 turn fewer than what the turn marker indicates.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
The Tiny status effect returns in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In this game, it reduces the target's Attack Power by two points. It is indicated by a very small face. Once again, Mario can use Shrink Stomp to shrink a foe. Yoshi can inflict this status on enemies with his Mini-Egg move. The Mini Mr. Mini item can also make enemies Tiny, or Mario and his partners when it is used by enemies. X-Naut PhDs are able to inflict Tiny on Mario and his partners by throwing chemicals, as are Beldam using her magic and Bonetail through his breath attack. Hammer Bros. no longer inflict this status with their attacks.
While Tiny, a character's voice and sound effects are raised in pitch. A counterpart status, Huge, was also introduced in this game, which raises the target's Attack Power by two points.
Super Paper Mario
In Super Paper Mario, Mario and co. can use the Pixl Dottie to shrink themselves down to a microscopic size; however, in this game, it does not affect the strength of their attacks. While tiny, the heroes can fit through small passages, enter tiny Warp Pipes and doors, and remain undetected by enemies.
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
This status effect reappears in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, but referred to as Mini, replacing the poison status effect from previous Mario & Luigi games. Spritzblooms, Viruses, Krubbishes, Antasmen and Shy Guy Airtubs DX are some of the enemies that can give this status effect to Mario and Luigi.
When the affected Bro is tiny, their POW and DEF are reduced, and prevents the use of Bros. Attacks and/or Luiginary Attacks for a few attack turns. However, the POW and DEF debuff percentage can be amplified even further with POW-Down and DEF-Down, making the Bro either deal very minimal damage, or turning even a single instance of damage into a devastating one-hit KO that can quickly end the game to unsuspecting players.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
- “Oh ho! This one's a real gas! It'll shrink you down to micro size!”
- —Ludwig von Koopa, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
The Tiny status effect reappears in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, but it can only be inflicted on Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario as the effect of the second Battle Card from Ludwig and Larry in their second battle, which costs 4 dark Star Points to use.
It functions mostly the same as it did in Dream Team, lowering POW and DEF, and disabling Bros. Attacks and Trio Attacks. The only exception is that there's no indicator displayed above each inflicted Bro as long as they are tiny, unlike all other status effects.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
In the Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser mode of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, the Lightning Captain Command can shrink the entire opposing squad, at which point all their stats will drop and will be unable to use Special Skills.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey
The Lightning command returns with the same effects in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey mode of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. During the level Be Leery of Lightning, all allies will remain small for the entire level.
