Variant of Fire Flower

Ice Flowers are power-up items introduced in volume 5 of Super Mario-kun, and first appear in-game in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. They are the icy counterparts of Fire Flowers. When obtained, Mario becomes Ice Mario and can throw out Ice Balls, capable of freezing most enemies. In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario or Luigi gain a different ice form when it is collected.

History[edit]

Super Mario-kun[edit]

The Star using the Ice Flower on the Firesnakes in volume 5 of Super Mario-kun

In volume 5 of Super Mario-kun, the Ice Flower is a work-in-progress power-up that the Star World stars were working on, by the time Koopa 3 conquers their labs. Sutakichi uses one to save Mario, Luigi and Yoshi from two Firesnakes.

A section detailing the appearance of the Ice Flower in volume 36 of Super Mario-kun

The Ice Flower reappears in volume 36, which is adapted from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It becomes Baby Luigi's primary form of offense. After the Commander Shroob destroys the snowman Baby Luigi had built, Baby Luigi pulls out an Ice Flower from the snowman's remains and defeats the Commander Shroob and his Support Shroobs, while accidentally freezing his other three allies. He then uses a Fire Flower to melt them, scorching Mario in the process.

Baby Luigi then later uses the Ice Flower against Mario, after the four characters were provoked by a Tanoomba masquerading as them.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Partners in Time description 1: Quickly press the button of the bro with the big iceball to chuck ice!
2: use the baby's button to throw high iceballs and hit flying enemies!

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the effects of an Ice Flower are similar to a Bro Flower, but they allow Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to shoot iceballs instead of fireballs. Ice Flowers can randomly lower the enemies' Power, Defense, and/or Speed. Ice Flowers can also do extra damage to fire enemies, such as Blazing Shroobs, but they also do extra damage to Shroob enemies and bosses (with the exception of Princess Shroob), and to Bowser and Baby Bowser.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]

The Ice Flower reappears in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, though it is only used by Luigi to become Ice Luigi in the overworld for the Bros. move Fire & Ice, allowing him to throw iceballs to freeze objects.

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

Ice Mario in Super Mario Galaxy

Ice Flowers reappear in Super Mario Galaxy, specifically in the Beach Bowl Galaxy, the Freezeflame Galaxy, and the Deep Dark Galaxy. As of this game, the outermost and middle rings of the flower's head are now blue and cyan, respectively, while the rest are the same colors as the Fire Flower. Ice Flowers turn Mario into Ice Mario, which lets him cross water and lava by creating hexagonal platforms of ice wherever he steps on either surface. Additionally, instead of running, Mario can skate about the level, increasing his speed. The music accompanying the ability (which is the Fire Flower's theme played in higher notes) speeds up until the Ice Flower's effect ends, in effect serving as a timer.

In Beach Bowl Galaxy, the Ice Flower only appears in the secret star. The mission has the player collect a ? Coin, which spawns an Ice Flower. Upon grabbing it, the player then must quickly Wall Jump up a series of waterfalls to get to the top of the island, where they must make a Cataquack follow them to the star's location, then have it hurl them into the star.

In Freezeflame Galaxy's mission The Frozen Peak of Baron Brrr, the player must use the power-up to jump on a series of fountains leading them to the boss arena, and then defeat Baron Brrr, who requires three spins to beat instead of one, unlike a Lil' Brr. Then, in Hot and Cold Collide, the flower is used at the end of the level to cross lava platforms to get to the star. An Ice Flower is also essential in the purple coin mission Purple Coins on the Summit, as it is used in the same fashion as in the Baron Brrr mission.

In Deep Dark Galaxy, the Ice Flower plays a minor role in Bubble Blastoff. First, the player must light three torches with a Fire Flower, and then an Ice Flower appears to jump on a few fountains with.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Ice Mario in New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Ice Flowers reappear once more in New Super Mario Bros. Wii with the same look from Super Mario Galaxy. Unlike in Super Mario Galaxy, however, they function as they did in their debut game, allowing Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, and Yellow Toad to launch Ice Balls that can freeze enemies and briefly freeze large enemies for a second (certain small enemies such as Bloopers and Spiny Cheep Cheeps are exceptions to being frozen for this time period). Ice Flowers can also defeat certain enemies in which Fire Flowers cannot, such as Dry Bones or Fuzzies. They can even extinguish the Koopalings' spells and Bowser's fireballs. Ice Flowers are often found in Towers and Castles. Yoshis can grab an Ice Ball thrown by another player or an Ice Bro and spit it out as a bigger projectile. Unlike Fire Flowers, the Ice Flower cannot damage mid-bosses or bosses.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Ice Flowers reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, retaining their behavior from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They are mainly featured in the level Frozen Fuzzies. In the level, the player can use it to throw iceballs to freeze Fuzzies, which will allow the player to ride on them to access other areas.

Mario Party series[edit]

Ice Flowers make a minor appearance in three minigames of the Mario Party series. In Mario Party 9, Ice Flowers appear among other items in the puzzle table in King Boo's Puzzle Attack. In Mario Party: Island Tour, Ice Flowers appear as one of the items the minigame Three House; like all items in that game, they will vanish when the player matches three of them. They are the last item to be added, only appearing when the player has reached level 20. Finally, in Mario Party: Star Rush, Ice Flowers appear in the minigame One-Stop Toad Shop, where players have to deliver them to Toad customers that request them.

Mario Tennis Open[edit]

In Mario Tennis Open, Ice Flowers appear as the Ice Flower Cup emblem and its trophy, which has a different design. A tennis racket, uniform, wrist bands, and shoes are designed based on this item and are available for Miis to use.

Paper Mario series[edit]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]

Ice Flowers appear as stickers in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. When used, Mario transforms into Ice Mario and hurls Ice Balls at any ground or low-altitude enemies, freezing them. If the attack depletes their HP, they shatter. Shiny and Flashy variants, which inflict more damage to enemies, also appear. They can be found in several places like Bouquet Gardens and can be bought at Whammino Mountain. It can be set as #70 in the Sticker Museum.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]

Ice Flowers return in Paper Mario: Color Splash taking the form of a card and keeping their appearance from the previous game. They come in normal and big variations, and are found since the very beginning of the game, first appearing in Ruddy Road. This time, if the enemy's color (or HP) depletes to 0, they will be covered in a ice cube before being shattered into pieces.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]

Ice Flowers return as an item in Paper Mario: The Origami King, in normal and Shiny forms. They can be used to attack enemies arranged in a straight line.

Mario Golf series[edit]

Mario Golf: World Tour[edit]

Ice Flowers are items in Mario Golf: World Tour. They are used for item shots, causing the ball to freeze terrain when bouncing and allowing water hazards to be bypassed. The Ice Flower is the basis of the design of a usable golf ball and set of golf clubs for Miis to use.

Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit]

Ice Flowers are items in Mario Golf: Super Rush. They are used by Luigi for his Special Shot and Special Dash. For his Special Shot, this transforms him into Ice Luigi, so when the ball hits the ground, it creates an impact that freezes all nearby balls and the ground. For his Special Dash, this allows Luigi to skate faster and leave a trail of ice behind. The ice from Luigi's Special Shot and Special Dash will make other players slip when walked on. Ice Flowers do not appear in Battle Golf, though when the Ice Rush event begins, the ground is frozen for 30 seconds.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

In Mario Kart Tour, the Ice Flower represents the special skill of Light-blue Toad (Pit Crew), Light-blue Shy Guy, Ice Bro, Blue Koopa (Freerunning), Penguin Luigi, Penguin Mario, Penguin Toadette, Ice Mario, Rosalina (Aurora), and the Ice-Cream, Blooper and Light Blue Mii Racing Suits. When deployed, ice balls orbit the player's kart and it lets the user throw three ice balls which freeze opponents solid for a few seconds. Frozen opponents slowly slide down the track in a straight line. When Ice Flower+ is active, a fourth ice ball is added.

While under the effect of an Ice Flower, the player can break out if they manage to enter a Frenzy. The effect of the Ice Flower can also be advantageous as it makes the player immune to other hazards such as Star Thwomps, Lightning, Spiny Shells, Super Horns, Super Bells, and Bullet Bills.

Ice Flowers also reappear on advertisements for the 100% Organic Antifreeze sponsor.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]

Ice Flowers appear in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition as Transformation items that allow the player to transform certain types of enemies into stronger forms. Ice Flowers can be obtained by opening ? Blocks, defeating Ice Bros. with a 10+ combo attack, or by winning them in the Lucky ? Blocks game at Toad Houses.

Transforming enemies into stronger forms require a certain amount of Ice Flowers. Transforming Hammer Bros. into Ice Bros requires five Ice Flowers. Cheep Cheeps require four to transform into Big Cheep Cheeps, and can be transformed even further with six more to transform into Cheep Chomps.

With the game's digital update to version 2.0, four teammates can transform into stronger forms with six Ice Flowers: Green Magikoopa can transform into Green/Blue Magikoopas; Blue Magikoopa can transform into Blue Magikoopas; Wendy O. Koopa can transform into "Wendy & Green Koopa Troopa"; and Roy Koopa can transform into "Roy & Cheep Cheep".

Minecraft[edit]

In the Super Mario Mash-Up of Minecraft, Blue Orchids are replaced with Ice Flowers.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

Near the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, before Peach's wedding with Bowser, Toad hands her a bouquet of flowers with an Ice Flower hidden inside. During the wedding, Peach pulls out the Ice Flower and uses it to freeze Bowser. She then uses it to freeze a pulley system that was lowering caged characters, including Luigi, Cranky Kong, Lumalee, and the Penguin King into a pool of lava. After lighting King Bob-omb's fuse, causing him to explode, Peach is knocked back by the explosion and loses the Ice Flower's powers.

Unused appearances[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

The Ice Flower is one of the two power-ups from Super Mario Galaxy to not return in Super Mario Galaxy 2, the other being the Red Star. However, the power-up and a remixed theme can be found in the game's data.[1]
