History

Mario is Missing!

Map of Sydney
Map of Sydney

Sydney appears as a city in all versions of Mario is Missing!. In the DOS version, it's in the third level set out of five; in the SNES version, it's in the second level set out of three; and in the NES version, alongside San Francisco, it's in the second pair of levels out of seven. There are three landmarks — Bondi Beach, the Taronga Zoo, and the Sydney Opera House — from which artifacts were stolen by Koopa Troopas; respectively, a surfboard, a koala, and some sheet music. In the PC version, a fourth artifact is stolen: a steel girder from the Sydney Harbor Bridge. If Luigi finds and returns the artifacts to their respective landmarks, he will be rewarded with money and finally the city will be rescued.

Additionally, to defeat the Pokey preventing him from leaving the city, he must also use the Globulator to call Yoshi to his location, which he can deduce from the following information.

  • Boy:
    • "It's the world's sixth largest country. But you can also count on it being the smallest continent."
    • "This place is a mega-cool wonder. They often refer to it as 'The Land Down Under.'"
  • Tourist:
    • "I was most interested in the Aborigines. But now I want to see kangaroos too."
    • "It's a continent and a country, and it's the only one that's like that."
  • Business Woman:
    • "You're in the southern hemisphere, its name means 'Unknown Southern Land' I hear."
    • "I always thought Australia's capital was spelled Sid's Knee."
  • Scientist:
    • "I don't like to be bossy, but can't you recognize an Aussie?"
    • "Although Canberra is the capital, you're in Aussie's oldest and largest city."
  • Police Officer:
    • "You're in Sydney, mate. Koalas and surfing...can't wait!"
    • "I knew the maps wouldn't fail ya', this is Sydney, Australia."

Sydney Sprint R from Mario Kart Tour
Sydney in Mario Kart Tour

Sydney also appears as the setting of the new course, Sydney Sprint, first appearing in Mario Kart Tour. Like other cities in the game, it has multiple numbered routes through the same map. The Sydney Tours in April–May 2021 and September 2021 in Mario Kart Tour introduced Sydney Sprint and Sydney Sprint 2 respectively, while the Anniversary Tour introduced Sydney Sprint 3.

Sydney Sprint returns in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a course in the Booster Course Pass' Propeller Cup. This version of the course combines all three of its routes from its Mario Kart Tour appearance, even though it released before Sydney Sprint 3.
