Water tides,[1] or simply tides,[2] appear in the Super Mario franchise as harmless water obstacles that move up and down.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Water tides debut in Super Mario Bros. 3, only appearing in World 3-3 and World 3-8. It slowly rises up and drops down constantly while Mario is being chased by Boss Basses.

Super Mario World[edit]

In Super Mario World, water tides only appear in Mondo where it occasionally rises and falls. Cheep Cheeps swim or flop around on land depending on the water levels.

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, water tides are activated by touching Crystal Taps in Wet-Dry World, and ground-pounding pillars in the basement of Peach's Castle. In Wet-Dry World, if Mario touches a Crystal Tap above the surface, the water rises up, and if below the surface, it drains down. In the Mushroom Castle, the water in the basement will drain after Mario ground pounds the pillars, where it unlocks Vanish Cap Under the Moat.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

In New Super Mario Bros., water tides are activated by ? Switches in World 2-3 and World 8-2. They also rise and fall on their own in World 6-2.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

In Super Mario Galaxy, freezing water tides appear in Freezeflame Galaxy.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Water Tides appear in two levels, World 6-3 and World 6-5. In the former level, they are activated by ? Switches whilst in the latter level, they rise and fall on their own. During the boss fight against Wendy in World 4-Castle, Kamek's magic causes the water level to periodically rise and fall. Mario cannot jump on Wendy while she is fully underwater.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, water tides only appear in World Star-4, where it constantly slowly rises up.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

In Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, water tides appear in Deepwater Dungeon.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker 2, the player can set the level and speed of water tides in the Daytime Forest course theme.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, water tides appear in the Pump Works. When Bowser drinks water from the Sea Pipe Statue, the water rises up. When Bowser stops drinking, the water drops down.
