Kammy Koopa, Paper Mario

Kammy Koopa is a high-ranking Magikoopa in the Koopa Troop, being described as the "brains behind Bowser", who appears primarily in the the first two installments of the Paper Mario series. She serves as the secondary antagonist in Paper Mario and as a minor villain regularly in Bowser's company in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its remake. Her name is a pun on "Kamek" and the feminine given name "Cammy."

Kammy Koopa first appeared in Paper Mario, where serves as the secondary antagonist. In the game's opening, Bowser and Kammy attack Star Haven to steal the Star Rod and kidnap the seven Star Spirits. They succeed in this goal and then use Bowser's newfound power to invade Peach's Castle, propelling it into the air atop Bowser's Castle. Mario confronts the pair, and Kammy cheers Bowser on during their battle. After Mario falls to Bowser's strengthened power and is blasted out of a nearby window, Kammy orders two Koopatrol to capture Princess Peach as other members of the Koopa Troop take the other inhabitants of the castle hostage.

In the Prologue, Mario falls down to Goomba Village, where Kammy discovers his survival. She attempts to impede his progress by summoning a Yellow Block to drop on the gate leading out of the village, blocking Mario from leaving and returning to Toad Town. Mario receives a Hammer from Goompa and is able to destroy the block. He proceeds to Toad Town, defeating Goomba King along the way, and Kammy informs Bowser of this development.

Thereafter, Kammy regularly reports Mario's progress to Bowser during the Princess Peach interludes. In the Chapter 2 interlude, Kammy rushes into Peach's room, where Bowser is speaking with her, to inform Bowser of Mario's defeat of Tubba Blubba. After Tubba Blubba's defeat, Kammy informs Bowser in the Chapter 3 interlude and reassures him that he remains unstoppable with the power of the Star Rod. Peach happened upon the conversation and eavesdropped, but she was eventually discovered by Bowser and Kammy. Bowser demanded Peach answer questions about Mario's greatest fears, with answers ranging from enemies to helpful items, Bowser orders Kammy to venture to the Shy Guy's Toy Box and use her magic to summon whatever Peach said Mario feared to guard several treasures the Shy Guys had stolen. Kammy expresses doubt that Peach was sincere in any of her responses, but she follows the order. She appears numerous times throughout the chapter to deploy the enemies or items Peach said most scared Mario. In the Chapter 4 interlude, Kammy catches Peach in the castle's kitchen after she baked a special Special Strawberry Cake for Gourmet Guy. She orders guards to return her to her room yet again, though not before Gourmet Guy informs Peach that the next Star Spirit is being held on Lavalava Island.

During Chapter 6's interlude, Peach disguises herself as a Clubba with the Sneaky Parasol and explores the Koopa Troop's occupation of her castle, where she discovers Kammy working on a secret project. Kammy took notice of what she thought was a Clubba and congratulated him doing a good job guarding Peach, though she soon realizes something is strange about the Clubba given he smells too nice. Using her magic to dispel the Clubba illusion, Kammy discovers Peach's disguise and orders two nearby Koopatrol to escort Peach back to her room. Once Mario completes Chapter 7 and has rescued all seven Star Spirits, Kammy urges Bowser to prepare his forces for an attack on the castle. She recommends ensuring Peach is kept out of their way by tying her up. Twink attempts to save Peach, though he is swatted out of a window by Bowser.

When Mario reaches the castle in Chapter 8, Kammy uses her secret project, the Power Platform, which is powered by her magic, to enhance Bowser's power even further. While Mario battled Bowser, Twink returns to flee Peach. This leads to his own battle with Kammy. At first, Kammy outmatched Twink completely, but as their battle waged on Twink grew stronger due to the wishes of Peach. Her only attack during this fight is to throw Yellow Blocks at Twink and Peach. Eventually, Kammy finds herself unable to harm Twink due to the power of Peach's wishes and was eventually knocked unconscious by him. When Bowser was defeated by Mario, the Power Platform begins to malfunction due to Bowser's power overloading it. The platform explodes, sending Peach's Castle and its inhabitants, including Mario, Peach, and Twink, back down to Toad Town; Bowser and Kammy, however, and blasted off to an unknown location.

Kammy survived this explosion and can be seen in the ending parade. There, she is engaged in a magical duel with Jr. Troopa. After a wayward magical attack from the duel hits Bowser, both Kammy and Jr. Troopa are burned by Bowser's fire breath.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its remake, Kammy Koopa returns as a minor villain, reprising her role as Bowser's right-hand woman but assuming the role of comic relief rather than a menacing threat. Bowser learns of the power of the Crystal Stars and that Princess Peach was kidnapped by an unknown assailant from Kammy's reconnaissance in the Chapter 1 interlude. Bowser jumps into his Koopa Clown Car as Kammy follows him to Rogueport in order to rescue Peach (and kidnap her for themselves) and gain the power of the Crystal Stars. This leads to a chase for the rest of the game where Bowser and Kammy struggle, and fail, to catch-up to Mario. Their next stop is in Petalburg, where Mario and his partners recently defeated Hooktail and gained their first Crystal Star. More importantly to Bowser, it is also where Peach has recently been spotted; however, once they arrive in the village they learn that Peach's "spotting" was actual just a poster of the princess hung in the window of one of the town's Koopa Troopa residents. Kammy consoles Bowser after he is enraged by being deceived.

The Chapter 3 interlude sees Bowser and Kammy arriving at The Great Tree, where the Puni elder scolds them for their intrusion. This leads to an argument between Kammy and the elder, which Bowser gleefully watches, chortling "It's Hag vs. Hag! Awesome!" Realizing there is nothing for them in the tree, they depart. Learning that the next Crystal Star is in Glitzville in the Chapter 4 interlude, Kammy attempts to purchase two tickets for them to ride the Cheep Blimp to the floating city, one for a "great evil king" and one for a "sweet, young thing" from Stewart, the Cheep Cheep blimp operator; however, Bowser's presence, as well as that of the "deluded old hag", scare Stewart enough that he runs away from his post. Tired of wasting time, Bowser takes his Koopa Clown Car to the floating city, leaving Kammy to wait for Stewart to return so she can take the blimp and wasting one of the specially prepared Special Dirigible Deluxe Brown Bag Kammy Lunches. The slower method of travel proves fortuitous for Kammy as Bower's craft crashes in the sea, leaving him unable to reach Glitzville, while she enjoys herself by watching fights in the Glitz Pit and eating the hot dogs from Mr. Hoggle's Hot Dog Stand. They eventually meet up again in Rogueport, where Kammy, adorned with balloons and a Rawk Hawk headband, brags about her time until Bowser blasts her with his fire breath out of jealousy.

Their resumed search next brings them to Twilight Town in Chapter 5's interlude, where they are confronted by Lord Crump and X-Nauts that share their aim of holding Peach hostage and acquiring all of the Crystal Stars. The X-Nauts are searching for the Superbombomb lost by the Three Shadows, but Bowser and Kammy decide to try to take the weapon for themselves. They summon the Koopa Troop to fight against the X-Nauts for the bomb, but Bowser's fire breath accidentally detonates it, exploding both the Koopa Troop and the X-Nauts. Bowser and Kammy finally reach Glitzville, together, in Chapter 6's interlude. They break into Rawk Hawk's room and find what they believe is the Gold Star. Rawk Hawk enters and attacks the intruders, sending Kammy flying backwards into the star. This causes the star to fall and drop on Kammy's head, splitting it in half. Kammy deduces the star is a fake and Rawk Hawk confirms Mario has already collected the real star, sending Bowser into a rage.

The pair reach Poshley Heights in the Chapter 7 interlude and question the various residents on the whereabouts of the Garnet Star, most of whom are horrified by their presence. They break into the Poshley Sanctum only to find that, like in Glitzville, the star housed there is a fake. The sanctum's curator, Pennington, belittles their failed attempt until a Paragoomba crashes through a window to report that Mario has collected all seven Crystal Stars and is heading to the The Thousand-Year Door. Kammy and Bowser then rush to meet him there, leading to their first and only appearance in the main story of the game. In Chapter 8, Kammy and Bowser and ambush Mario and his party as they traverse the Palace of Shadow to finally rescue Peach. Intent of saving her themselves (only so they can kidnap her instead), Bowser and Kammy engage Mario and his partners in battle. They are defeated, and their distraction of Mario inadvertently provides Sir Grodus enough time to prepare for the ritual wherein the Shadow Queen will possess Peach's body. Mario eventually rescues Peach, freeing her from the Shadow Queen's control and defeating the demon.

In the original game, Kammy is seen walking with Bowser during the end parade; however, the parade is absent in the remake. Instead, Kammy and Bowser walk across the stage with other characters as the credits roll, with Bowser dropping on Grodus in the process.

Field Tattle

Outside of battle, Goombella can use Tattle on Kammy Koopa only after Mario defeats her and Bowser in the Palace of Shadow.

Super Smash Bros. series

Two items featuring Kammy Koopa appear in the Super Smash Bros. series. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there is a sticker of Kammy that raises the attack power of "direct" attacks by eight. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kammy is featured as a primary, attack-type spirit that, when equipped, increases the power of magic attacks.

General information

Personality

Although Bowser outright disrespects her quite often, usually directly in her presence, Kammy appears totally devoted to him and is often shown in his company. In Goombella's tattle in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, she wonders whether it is harder for Kammy to put up with Bowser or vice versa. The old Magikoopa is also somewhat vain, believing herself to be beautiful beyond compare, saying her name is beautiful, and often describing herself as such. Kammy can also be unintentionally comical at times and she occasionally shows signs of senility, particularly in The Thousand Year Door.

Physical appearance

Kammy Koopa is one of the highest-ranking members of the Koopa Troop. Accordingly, she wears distinctive purple robes to separate her from the others. Her dark purple hat, unlike most Magikoopas, bends backwards,where most Magikoopas' hats stick straight up unless they are mounted on a broom. She is seen with white hair down the side of her face and small oval-shaped glasses. She is also noticeably shorter than most Magikoopas, perhaps due to her hunched back. Being shorter, her staff is also shorter than most Magikoopas. She is also often seen mounted on her broom. The broom is much bigger than her, with bamboo-like texture to the wood. The end of the broom has a white and purple cloud-like texture. This end piece puffs as she flies. Her physical appearance bears a striking resemblance to Kamella.

Powers and abilities

In Paper Mario, Kammy Koopa showed a variety of powers, doing such feats as summoning Yellow Blocks and living creatures, using magical lightning which could cancel the effects of the Sneaky Parasol, and, in the game's ending parade, the ability to teleport and the usual Magikoopa ability to shoot a magical blast. Kammy also showed some expertise at engineering, being the one who built Bowser's Power Platform. Despite this range of abilities, Kammy was exceptionally weak in battle, having at the most only ten HP.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Kammy Koopa possess more generic Magikoopa abilities, such as bestowing different powers to herself and Bowser and recovering health.
