In some of the ''[[Super Mario (series)|Super Mario]]'' titles, [[Mario]] can ride around in one.

==Appearance==
Most Lakitu's Clouds are white. However, in ''[[Paper Mario]]'', [[Lakilulu]] has a pink-colored cloud; additionally, [[Dark Lakitu]]s from ''[[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]]'' have gray clouds. [[Lakithunder]] from ''[[New Super Mario Bros.]]'' also has a dark gray cloud with glaring, yellow eyes, capable of firing lightning bolts. [[King Lakitu]] from ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'', another lightning-firing Lakitu, has a purple cloud. [[Lakipea]]s, the [[Beanbean Kingdom]] equivalent of Lakitus, have vines covering their clouds.

Many Lakitu's Clouds also have faces. In the ''Paper Mario'' series, the clouds share the expressions of their owners; additionally, some Lakitu's Clouds in the ''Paper Mario'' series wear sunglasses. The clouds of [[Fishing Boo]]s and [[Calm Fishing Boo]]s do not have faces, however. In ''[[Super Mario 64]]'', ''[[The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!]]'', and ''[[Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!]]'', all Lakitus are portrayed without faces on their clouds, but in ''Super Mario 64'', there is an unused texture for a face for Lakitu's Cloud left in the game's data.<ref>[https://tcrf.net/Super_Mario_64_(Nintendo_64)/Unused_Textures Super Mario 64 Unused Textures] ''The Cutting Room Floor''. Certain games of the [[Super Mario (series)|''Super Mario'' series]] allow the player character to ride in one temporarily.

Similar cloud characters and items have appeared throughout the ''[[Mario (franchise)|Mario]]'' franchise. In ''Super Mario World'', when Yoshi eats two pink [[Berry|berries]] in the same stage, a cloud resembling Lakitu's Cloud appears and drops ten striped smiley-faced coins, giving a [[1-Up Mushroom]] if all of them are collected. The [[Thunder Cloud]] item in ''[[Mario Kart Wii]]'' looks like a Lakitu's Cloud, but a bluish-gray color with a [[Lightning]] on its head. [[Ruff Puff]]'s Tattle in ''[[Super Paper Mario]]'' openly speculates on the relationship between it and the similar Lakitu's Cloud.

However, this does not update, so if they lose a life right after using it, they will be transported back to their map position before using it. (This can be avoided by updating the player's saved location as usual, by using a [[Warp Pipe]] on the map or clearing a level without losing a life.)

It allows [[Mario]] or [[Luigi]] to skip a level from the world map, but should they lose a life in the next level, their map position is reset.

====''Super Mario World''====
====''Super Mario World''====
In ''[[Super Mario World]]'', after taking out the Lakitu riding a Lakitu's Cloud, the player can jump on it to temporarily float around and reach places that they could normally not get to. Although Lakitus typically only travel across a horizontal axis, the player's control of the Lakitu's clouds allows for travel in any direction for as long as the cloud lasts. If the player jumps from a Lakitu's Cloud while moving in it, the resulting momentum causes the cloud to float indefinitely in the direction the player was heading. To access a Lakitu's Cloud, the player first has to defeat the Lakitu with a [[fireball]], a [[Cape Mario|cape]] attack, a [[sand cloud]], a throwing object (such as a [[shell]] or a [[Grab Block]]), or with [[Invincible Mario|invincibility]] power from a [[Super Star]]; stomping on the Lakitu will disintegrate the cloud, rendering it unusable.
Lakitu's Clouds are objects in ''[[Super Mario World]]''. The player character can jump into one and ride it temporarily after defeating its Lakitu with [[fireball]]s or other projectiles to float around anywhere in the sky, unlike how Lakitus use them to move horizontally only. The Lakitu's Cloud moves at a constant speed if the player character jumps from it until it is reoccupied or despawns. The Lakitu's Cloud dissolves if the Lakitu is [[stomp]]ed.

A [[List of Super Mario World glitches#Everlasting cloud ride|glitch]] exists in ''Super Mario World'' that causes the cloud to last indefinitely if the Lakitu on top is defeated with [[Fire Flower|fire power]].
A [[List of Super Mario World glitches#Everlasting cloud ride|glitch]] exists in ''Super Mario World'' that causes the cloud to last indefinitely if the Lakitu on top is defeated with [[Fire Flower|fire power]].
====''Super Mario 64'' / ''Super Mario 64 DS''====
Lakitu's Clouds return in ''[[Super Mario 64]]'' and ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]''. They were originally a 2D texture without a face, but the remake gives the cloud its usual look.

====''New Super Mario Bros.''====
====''New Super Mario Bros.''====
Lakitus and their clouds return in ''[[New Super Mario Bros.]]'', behaving largely the same as in ''Super Mario World''. In order to steal a Lakitu's Cloud, the player has to hit the Lakitu with a fireball or a shell; attacking the Lakitu in any other way will destroy the cloud.
Lakitu's Clouds return in ''[[New Super Mario Bros.]]'' They are the same as in ''Super Mario World'', except a [[shell dash]] is another way to hijack a Lakitu's Cloud temporarily. Even if the cloud is unoccupied, hitting it with the shell dash ability earns the player character 1,000 points.<ref>{{cite|author=Nishman235|date=April 11, 2018|url=youtu.be/xiWaiA8kFyw|title=MAX SCORE GLITCH Tutorial <nowiki>[New Super Mario Bros. When unoccupied, Lakitu's Clouds can be hit with [[Shell Mario|Shell Mario or Luigi]]'s [[shell dash]] ability for 1000 points. The clouds themselves are not affected in any way in the process, meaning that points will continuously accrue from them for as long as they are in collision with the character's shell.<ref>Nishman235 (April 11, 2018). [https://youtu.be/xiWaiA8kFyw MAX SCORE GLITCH Tutorial <nowiki>[New Super Mario Bros. DS]</nowiki>]. ''YouTube''. Retrieved September 20, 2021.</ref> Like in ''Super Mario World'', Lakitu's Clouds will acquire momentum if the player jumps out of one while moving in it; shell dashing into one can stop it from advancing further.
====''New Super Mario Bros. Wii''====
Lakitu's Clouds return in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]''. They are identical to those in ''New Super Mario Bros.'', though Lakitu's Clouds can now also become accessible from stomping a Lakitu.

====''Super Mario Galaxy 2''====
====''Super Mario Galaxy 2''====
Lakitus reappear in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'' riding their clouds, but these clouds cannot be ridden by [[Mario]] or [[Luigi]]. If a Lakitu's Cloud is eaten by [[Yoshi]], the Lakitu will fall to the ground on its shell and struggle for a few seconds until the cloud reappears, unless defeated.
Lakitu's Clouds return in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]''. They cannot be used. A Lakitu's Cloud disappears if its Lakitu is stunned on the ground, though the Lakitu creates another to use moments later.

====''New Super Mario Bros. 2''====
====''New Super Mario Bros. 2''====
In ''[[New Super Mario Bros. 2]]'', Lakitu's Clouds swell up for a split second when the music makes the "bah" sound. When the player touches a [[Gold Ring]], Lakitus become [[Gold Lakitu]]s, and their clouds also become golden; when the player moves in such golden cloud, it generates a trail of coins.
Lakitu's Clouds return in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. 2]]''. They are also affected by [[Gold Ring]]s, becoming gold, and they spawn a trail of coins when ridden. Lakitu's Clouds swell up for a split second to "[[paah]]s."

====''New Super Mario Bros. U''====
====''New Super Mario Bros. U'' / ''New Super Luigi U'' / ''New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe''====
In ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]'', Lakitu's Clouds now mouth to the "bah"s in the music. Aside from appearing in the main game, one Lakitu's Cloud also appears in the [[Challenge Mode (New Super Mario Bros. U)|Challenge Mode]] level [[Lakitu's Cloud Heist]], where it has to be used to collect the [[coin]]s located high in the air.
Lakitu's Clouds appear in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]'', ''[[New Super Luigi U]]'', and [[New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe|their port]]. Their mouths move whenever a "paah" sound plays. A Lakitu's Cloud is used to collect the [[coin]]s in [[Lakitu's Cloud Heist]].

====''Super Mario Maker''====
====''Super Mario Maker''====
In ''[[Super Mario Maker]]'' and ''[[Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS]]'', players can shake Lakitus to remove them from their clouds, leaving them for Mario to use or to put other enemies, objects, and power-ups such as [[Hammer Bro]]s, [[Cannon]]s, and [[Super Mushroom]]s in them. If an enemy is placed in a Lakitu's Cloud, it will move horizontally across the screen. If given [[Wings]], the enemy will move from side to side in a wave-like pattern.
Lakitu's clouds are course elements in ''[[Super Mario Maker]]'' and ''[[Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS]]''. One becomes usable for Mario or to put an enemy, object, or power-up inside of it if the Lakitu is shook from the cloud, ejecting it. Enemies in Lakitu's Cloud travel horizontally, and those with wings move in a wavy pattern from side to side.

====''Super Mario Maker 2''====
====''Super Mario Maker 2''====
Lakitu's Clouds reappear as placeable objects in ''[[Super Mario Maker 2]]'', acting the same as in ''Super Mario Maker''. They are present in all game styles except the ''[[Super Mario 3D World]]'' style. A Lakitu's Cloud is used as a part of [[Peach's Castle]] during its reconstruction after completing a certain mission.
Lakitu's Clouds return in ''[[Super Mario Maker 2]]''. They function the same as in ''Super Mario Maker'' and were not added to the ''[[Super Mario 3D World]]'' style. A Lakitu's Cloud in Story Mode is used to reconstruct [[Peach's Castle]] after completing [[Head in the Clouds (level)|a certain level]].

====''Super Mario Bros. Wonder''====
Lakitu's Clouds return in ''[[Super Mario Bros. Wonder]]''. They are spawned indefinitely in [[Petal Isles Flying Battleship]] to allow the player characters to traverse the levels.

===''Mario Kart'' series===
===''Mario Kart'' series===
In ''[[Mario Kart (series)|Mario Kart]]'' games, Lakitu's Cloud is frequently seen alongside the recurring [[Lakitu]] assistant. In ''[[Mario Kart 7]]'', the cloud wears goggles in water-themed courses. A kart based on it, [[Cloud 9]], is also introduced in that game. In ''[[Mario Kart 8]]'' and ''[[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe]]'', Lakitu's Cloud appears on several flags around the course [[Dragon Driftway]].
A Lakitu's Cloud is used by the [[Lakitu (Mario Kart referee)|Lakitu]] referee in the [[Mario Kart (series)|''Mario Kart'' series]]. It wears goggles during [[underwater driving]] in ''[[Mario Kart 7]]'', which introduces a vehicle based on Lakitu's Clouds, [[Cloud 9]]. Lakitu's Cloud is depicted on several courses in [[Dragon Driftway]] in ''[[Mario Kart 8]]'' and ''[[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe]]''. A Lakitu's Cloud is the basis of the [[Standard Kart]] and emblem of the playable Lakitu in ''[[Mario Kart Arcade GP DX]]''.

===''Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island'' / ''Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3''===
Lakitu's Clouds are objects in ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'' and [[Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3|its remake]]. They become usable for the player character temporarily after they defeat the Lakitu, only by stomping, since other attacks destroy the cloud. After being used for a while, a Lakitu's Cloud blinks repeatedly to indicate it is about to disappear, something that became standard in the ''Super Mario'' series.

===''Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island''===
===''Mario Party'' series===
In ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'' and ''[[Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3]]'', Lakitu's Clouds retain their function from ''Super Mario World'', enabling the playable character to float around a level freely upon defeating the Lakitus in them. In these games, contrary to ''Super Mario World'', the only way to hijack a Lakitu's Cloud is to jump on the Lakitu, whereas any other attack destroys the cloud. The clouds will start blinking repeatedly a while after use to signal their disappearance, a trait seen in future 2D platform games in the ''[[Super Mario (series)|Super Mario]]'' series.
====''Mario Party 10''====
Lakitu's Clouds are objects in the minigame [[Fuzzy Fliers]] in ''[[Mario Party 10]]''. They are used to fly to the top of a tower. If a Lakitu's Cloud runs out of time, the player character in it loses.

====''Super Mario Party Jamboree''====
Lakitu's Cloud is an object in ''[[Super Mario Party Jamboree]]''. It appears on [[Mario's Rainbow Castle]], replacing the [[Fwoosh]] found on the original board. It takes the player to the tower where they can get a [[Star (Mario Party series)|Star]] from [[Toad (species)|Yellow Toad]] or a [[Ztar]] from [[Impostor Bowser]].

===''The Super Mario Bros. Movie''===
In ''[[The Super Mario Bros. Movie]]'', Lakitu's Clouds from ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' appear in the antiques shop.

Lakitu's Clouds (occasionally formatted as Lakitu's clouds)[1] are objects introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3. They are clouds with a smiley face on each, usually inhabited and maneuvered through the air by Lakitus. Certain games of the Super Mario series allow the player character to ride in one temporarily.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Lakitu's Cloud[2][3] (originally named Jugem's Cloud,[4][5][6] with "Jugem" being the romanization of Lakitu's Japanese name, or Cloud Jewel)[7]) is an item in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its reissues. It allows Mario or Luigi to skip a level from the world map, but should they lose a life in the next level, their map position is reset.

Super Mario World[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds are objects in Super Mario World. The player character can jump into one and ride it temporarily after defeating its Lakitu with fireballs or other projectiles to float around anywhere in the sky, unlike how Lakitus use them to move horizontally only. The Lakitu's Cloud moves at a constant speed if the player character jumps from it until it is reoccupied or despawns. The Lakitu's Cloud dissolves if the Lakitu is stomped.

A glitch exists in Super Mario World that causes the cloud to last indefinitely if the Lakitu on top is defeated with fire power.

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds return in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. They were originally a 2D texture without a face, but the remake gives the cloud its usual look.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds return in New Super Mario Bros. They are the same as in Super Mario World, except a shell dash is another way to hijack a Lakitu's Cloud temporarily. Even if the cloud is unoccupied, hitting it with the shell dash ability earns the player character 1,000 points.[8] Lakitu's Clouds are required to obtain certain Star Coins.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They are identical to those in New Super Mario Bros., though Lakitu's Clouds can now also become accessible from stomping a Lakitu.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds return in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They cannot be used. A Lakitu's Cloud disappears if its Lakitu is stunned on the ground, though the Lakitu creates another to use moments later.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds return in New Super Mario Bros. 2. They are also affected by Gold Rings, becoming gold, and they spawn a trail of coins when ridden. Lakitu's Clouds swell up for a split second to "paahs."

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds appear in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and their port. Their mouths move whenever a "paah" sound plays. A Lakitu's Cloud is used to collect the coins in Lakitu's Cloud Heist.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

Lakitu's clouds are course elements in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS. One becomes usable for Mario or to put an enemy, object, or power-up inside of it if the Lakitu is shook from the cloud, ejecting it. Enemies in Lakitu's Cloud travel horizontally, and those with wings move in a wavy pattern from side to side.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds return in Super Mario Maker 2. They function the same as in Super Mario Maker and were not added to the Super Mario 3D World style. A Lakitu's Cloud in Story Mode is used to reconstruct Peach's Castle after completing a certain level.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds return in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. They are spawned indefinitely in Petal Isles Flying Battleship to allow the player characters to traverse the levels.

Mario Kart series[edit]

A Lakitu's Cloud is used by the Lakitu referee in the Mario Kart series. It wears goggles during underwater driving in Mario Kart 7, which introduces a vehicle based on Lakitu's Clouds, Cloud 9. Lakitu's Cloud is depicted on several courses in Dragon Driftway in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. A Lakitu's Cloud is the basis of the Standard Kart and emblem of the playable Lakitu in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds are objects in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake. They become usable for the player character temporarily after they defeat the Lakitu, only by stomping, since other attacks destroy the cloud. After being used for a while, a Lakitu's Cloud blinks repeatedly to indicate it is about to disappear, something that became standard in the Super Mario series.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party 10[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds are objects in the minigame Fuzzy Fliers in Mario Party 10. They are used to fly to the top of a tower. If a Lakitu's Cloud runs out of time, the player character in it loses.

Super Mario Party Jamboree[edit]

Lakitu's Cloud is an object in Super Mario Party Jamboree. It appears on Mario's Rainbow Castle, replacing the Fwoosh found on the original board. It takes the player to the tower where they can get a Star from Yellow Toad or a Ztar from Impostor Bowser.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Lakitu's Clouds from Super Mario Bros. 3 appear in the antiques shop.

En lui lançant un œuf, vous le ferez tomber, et pourrez alors monter sur son nuage. Hélas, le nuage disparaît au bout de quelques secondes...[9] (a little joker perched on a cloud throw rock at you... by throwing an egg at him, you will make him fall, allowing you to climb onto his cloud. Alas, the cloud disappears after a few seconds...)

    Sure, you could bounce up to that extra high platform on a trampoline, but why not travel in style by knocking off Lakitu and stealing his cloud?

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Lakitu's Clouds from left to right: Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and Paper Mario

Most Lakitu's Clouds are white. However, in Paper Mario, Lakilulu has a pink-colored cloud; additionally, Dark Lakitus from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door have gray clouds. Lakithunder from New Super Mario Bros. also has a dark gray cloud with glaring, yellow eyes, capable of firing lightning bolts. King Lakitu from Super Mario Galaxy 2, another lightning-firing Lakitu, has a purple cloud. Lakipeas, the Beanbean Kingdom equivalent of Lakitus, have vines covering their clouds.

Many Lakitu's Clouds also have faces. In the Paper Mario series, the clouds share the expressions of their owners; additionally, some Lakitu's Clouds in the Paper Mario series wear sunglasses. The clouds of Fishing Boos and C. Fishing Boos do not have faces, however. In Super Mario 64, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, and Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!, all Lakitus are portrayed without faces on their clouds, but in Super Mario 64, there is an unused texture for a face for Lakitu's Cloud left in the game's data.[11] In the latter, Lakitu and Mario are able to control rain, thunder, sun, typhoons, and snow with levers on the cloud.

Similar cloud characters and items have appeared throughout the Super Mario franchise. In Super Mario World, when Yoshi eats two pink berries in the same stage, a cloud resembling Lakitu's Cloud appears and drops ten striped smiley-faced coins, giving a 1-Up Mushroom if all of them are collected. The Thunder Cloud item in Mario Kart Wii looks like a Lakitu's Cloud, but a bluish-gray color with a Lightning on its head. Ruff Puff's Tattle in Super Paper Mario openly speculates on the relationship between it and the similar Lakitu's Cloud.
