Piantas are a group of island-dwelling people that debuted in Super Mario Sunshine. They are humanoid, appear in a variety of colors, and sport small palm trees growing out of the top of their heads. Their name means "plant" in Italian. Piantas typically wear grass skirts or grass dresses, although other Piantas have been seen wearing more conventional attires. Piantas are generally laid back and friendly, yet they also have a fairly short temper. Despite their placid temperament, they also boast impressive strength.

In Super Mario Sunshine, Piantas share their island home with the Nokis. While the Nokis mostly live in Noki Bay, the Piantas mainly reside in Pianta Village. However, while Pianta Village is their primary home, Piantas live all over the island. Many Piantas make a living by producing and selling fruits in small markets in Delfino Plaza. When sprayed with FLUDD or otherwise gotten wet, many of them shake off the water, then shout angrily at Mario. They also shout at him if he jumps on them.

Piantas are also a very strong species, as they can toss Mario with ease. One Pianta tells Mario that these Piantas are called "Chucksters," which is reaffirmed by some of the Chucksters themselves. Mario can sometimes use this to his advantage by having a Pianta toss him to higher ledges and cliffs.

Piantas appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 in one galaxy, the Starshine Beach Galaxy, which seems to be based on the different areas from Isle Delfino. They are the only friendly species not to have a representative on Starship Mario, as their roles are quite minor, but they can hurl Mario to various spots. These Piantas, however, hurl Mario to another area without needing to engage them in a conversation first. All of the Piantas in the game are male.

Piantas are playable characters in Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers making their first playable role. In both installments, all the playable Piantas are males, come in the blue, red, and yellow variants, and have the Laser Beam ability. The male Red Pianta is more magenta-colored than red in the Mario Baseball series. In Mario Super Sluggers, while the Piantas share good chemistry with the Toads and Toadsworth, the Nokis have good chemistry with Toadette, whose chemistry is neutral with the Piantas. In a similar manner, the Toads and Toadsworth have neutral chemistry with the Nokis. Their bats are trees.

In Mario Superstar Baseball, Piantas are the weakest batters among all the Power characters, with the Red Pianta featuring slightly better batting than the other Pianta colors (rivaling King Boo). They are also decent pitchers, but have poor fielding skills, and are very slow runners.

Pianta, Super Mario Sunshine

Piantas are a group of island-dwelling people that debuted in Super Mario Sunshine. They are humanoid, appear in a variety of colors, and sport small palm trees growing out of the top of their heads. Their name means "plant" in Italian. Piantas typically wear grass skirts or grass dresses, although other Piantas have been seen wearing more conventional attires. Piantas are generally laid back and friendly, yet they also have a fairly short temper. Despite their placid temperament, they also boast impressive strength.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

“Welcome! To the sun-drenched tropical paradise of Isle Delfino!”
Pianta, Super Mario Sunshine

In Super Mario Sunshine, Piantas share their island home with the Nokis. While the Nokis mostly live in Noki Bay, the Piantas mainly reside in Pianta Village. However, while Pianta Village is their primary home, Piantas live all over the island. Many Piantas make a living by producing and selling fruits in small markets in Delfino Plaza. When sprayed with FLUDD or otherwise gotten wet, many of them shake off the water, then shout angrily at Mario. They also shout at him if he jumps on them.

Certain Piantas can throw Mario. He can sometimes use this to his advantage by having a Pianta toss him to higher ledges and cliffs or across pits.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

An Orange Pianta

Piantas appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 in one galaxy, the Starshine Beach Galaxy, which seems to be based on the different areas from Isle Delfino. They are the only friendly characters not to have a representative on Starship Mario. The Piantas that appear are all male, and their role is similar to that of the Piantas from Super Mario Sunshine, hurling Mario to various spots; Mario does not need to initiate a conversation in order to be thrown. Like in Super Mario Sunshine, jumping onto a Pianta results in him yelling at Mario.

Mario Kart series[edit]

For the Mario Kart series, Piantas mostly appear as spectators. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Piantas are spectators in Peach Beach and Daisy Cruiser as well as during the award ceremony in the former course. In Mario Kart DS, Piantas are spectators in Delfino Square, which has a stone Pianta statue around the first loop of the race. In Mario Kart Wii, Piantas spectate in two newly added courses, Coconut Mall, Daisy Circuit as well as two classic courses, DS Delfino Square and GCN Peach Beach, and the battle course Delfino Pier. In Coconut Mall, Piantas also indicate which is the correct escalator for racers to use, and one yellow Pianta is the shop assistant of Delfino Dream, which can be passed through as a shortcut. In all three games, Piantas are featured in the Delfino Fruits sponsor, and in Mario Kart Wii, they are also in the Tropical Grocery sponsor in Moonview Highway. In Mario Kart 7, Piantas neither retain their appearances in GCN Daisy Cruiser nor Wii Coconut Mall, though they do return in the latter's Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass iteration.[1] In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Piantas appear as spectators in Sunshine Airport, DS Cheep Cheep Beach and Super Bell Subway, as well as in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe-exclusive 3DS Wuhu Town. Additionally, Super Bell Subway shows Piantas running the cafés throughout the course, and a Pianta is displayed on the sign for the Coconut Cafe sponsor, which also appears in Mario Kart Tour.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Piantas are one of the many peoples living in Rogueport. Here, the attitude of the Piantas is different, and they are organized in the criminal organization known as the Pianta syndicate, led by Don Pianta, and later Frankie. They have control of Rogueport's west side, and are rivaling with the Robbo Thieves led by Ishnail, who operate on the east side.

Mario Tennis series[edit]

Piantas appear in Mario Power Tennis for the Nintendo GameCube as spectators, and in Mario Tennis: Power Tour for the Game Boy Advance as NPCs and spectators.

Mario Baseball series[edit]

A Red Pianta prepares to bat in Mario Super Sluggers.

Piantas are playable characters in Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers for the first time. Both of them have good chemistry with Mario.

In Mario Super Sluggers, all three Piantas have their batting skills improved, making it easier for them to score home runs. They are still rather slow, and they are still poor fielders. Their pitching is also slightly weaker, although the blue Pianta's pitching remains unchanged.

Mario Strikers series[edit]

Piantas appear in the first two Mario Strikers games, Super Mario Strikers and Mario Strikers Charged, as spectators.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party 8[edit]

Piantas appear throughout Goomba's Booty Boardwalk in Mario Party 8. Two pink females are seen hula dancing at the beginning, similar to the Doot-Doot Sisters, but have no certain purpose. Yellow chucksters toss the player about five to eight spaces ahead if the player lands on one of their Green Spaces. Blue fishing Piantas[2] fish a piece of Candy for the player if their Green Space is landed on. Lastly, small purple females run the Candy shops. A blue Pianta also appears as one of the thirty Super Mario characters racing in Moped Mayhem.

Mario Party 9[edit]

The Pianta in the minigame Pianta Pool in Mario Party 9

A blue Pianta makes a minor appearance in Mario Party 9, in the minigame Pianta Pool. During the game, he throws rings out into the pool, which the players must grab so that Cheep Cheeps can jump through them. He only tosses the rings into the pool once all of them have been used during that round.

Mario & Sonic series[edit]

Some Piantas in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

In the first two Mario & Sonic games, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, specifically their Wii versions, Piantas appear as spectators, similarly as in the Mario Kart series and Super Mario sport spinoffs; the latter game also features a Pianta as a VIP member who rewards the player with 100 star points. In Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Piantas are featured in the Snow Day Street Hockey event, both on the Main Street rink, where they appear from windows after a puck is shot into their box to return it as a Red or Green Shell, and the Market Street rink, where they appear behind the fruit stands but do not affect gameplay. In the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, a blue male Pianta runs the Mario item stand on Copacabana Beach.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Piantas make a few non-physical appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a male and female Pianta both have their own sticker each, and in The Subspace Emissary, both stickers can be applied to any fighter; the male Pianta sticker reduces dizziness time by 94 frames, while the female Pianta sticker increases the power of energy-based attacks by 15 points. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a group of Piantas appear as a Novice-class support spirit, and using it equips the fighter with a Banana Gun when starting a battle. The spirit battle takes place on the Delfino Plaza stage, featuring several Kirbys of varying colors meant to simulate Piantas. The spirit can be obtained by either winning this battle on the Spirit Board or by clearing the challenge of purchasing an item during a Sunday sale in the Vault Shop.

Mario Sports Mix[edit]

In Mario Sports Mix, Piantas appear as spectators and are often seen in several courts of the game.

Minecraft[edit]

In the Super Mario Mash-up in Minecraft, blue Piantas, red Piantas, the Hotel manager, the Pianta mayor, and an Isle Delfino Police officer replace Villagers.
