Alpine Skiing Downhill is an Event that appears in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The objective of the event is to complete the course in the fastest time while passing between flags, with the event taking place at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Center. Toads and Chao appear as a referees in this event.
Gameplay[edit]
In this event, the player starts by swinging the Wii Remote down when "Go!" appears onscreen. Doing so with perfect timing will allow the player to perform a starting dash, though doing so too late will delay the player's start. The player can also charge up energy before starting by holding and releasing it when swinging down, which will give the player an additional boost if time correctly. Once the player has started, they can turn their character by tilting the Wii Remote in the direction they want to turn, and can crouch by tilting the Wii Remote forwards, allowing them to go faster. The player must aim to ski between the 25 flag gates on the course, and will incur a 2 second penalty for any gates they miss. The player can gain a short speed boost by hitting the inside pole of a flag, and will gain a larger special boost for hitting three flagpoles, regardless of whether it is don consecutively. The player can gain an additional speed boost from flags by pressing as they hit the poles, and can also gain speed boosts by swinging the Wii Remote down when the character lands back on the course after performing small jumps. The character that completes the course in the fastest time wins the event.

Tutorial[edit]
- Start
Let's go over how to start.
A moment after "Ready" appears, the "Go!" signal is given.
To start, swing the Wii Remote Plus down when the "Go!" signal is given.
Swing at the same time as the "Go!" signal for a starting dash.
Try practising the start now. - Turning
Let's talk about turning.
Tilt the Wii Remote Plus left or right to turn.
These two red flags are called a flag gate. In Alpine Skiing Downhill, players compete to pass through these flag gates and reach the finish in the shortest time.
If you fail to pass through a flag gate, penalty time is added to your total. The number of gates you've missed is shown on the lower right of the screen.
Try turning to pass through a flag gate now. - Crouching
You can lean forward and crouch as you ski.
As you ski, tilt the Wii Remote Plus forward to crouch and speed up.
Try skiing while crouching to speed up. - Flag Boosts
Next, let's talk about flag boosts. Pass right next to the flags so they bend over to do a flag boost.
Every three flag boosts you perform generates a special boost.
Special boosts are the key to getting a faster time. Ski down a route and hit as many flags as possible.
Try doing the flag boost now.
Control Hints[edit]
- When jumping from a height, swing the Wii Remote Plus (and Nunchuk) down just before you hit the ground. If you time it right, you'll perform a landing boost.
- Press just before hitting a flag to bend it over with more force, speeding up your flag boost even more.
