Nep-Enuts,[1][2] also known as Nep-enuts,[3] Super Big Nep-Enut,[3] Super Big Nep-enuts,[4] Giant Nep-Enuts,[5][6] or blue Gargantua Blarggs,[7] are Blargg enemies that debuted in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They are blue counterparts to Gargantua Blarggs that reside in water instead of lava. The name "Nep-Enut" is an anagram of "Neptune", the Roman god of the sea.
History[edit]
Yoshi's Island series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]
First appearing in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and appearing again in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Nep-Enuts remain submerged until Yoshi approaches it. It then rises, blocking Yoshi's path. Yoshi must throw a egg for it to submerge in the water (and only its eyebrows remain visible). If Yoshi jumps over it, it chases.
A particular Nep-Enut in the level What's Gusty Taste Like? lives in a secret underground area, and is located entirely underneath terrain and Semisolid Platforms, making it untouchable when it is not in its risen form. The Player's Guide specifies this one as a Submarine Nep-Enut,[8] though the actual behavior between the two is the same.
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
Nep-Enuts return in Yoshi's Island DS, retaining their behavior in its predecessor. They appear only in one level: Up the Creek. A new relative is also introduced: Egg-enuts, which dangles a fake egg and begins to flail if a Yoshi gets too close.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
Nep-Enuts return in Yoshi's New Island, where three appear in Rise of the Nasty Nep-Enuts, two in the first area and the third in the last area. They chase after Yoshi. They take three eggs to cause them to temporarily retract into the water, rather than one.
Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
In Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, Nep-Enuts match Gargantua Blargs' appearance, as a blue scarf with eyebrows but no fangs. Nep-Enuts only appear in the course Frozen Solid and Chilled. They spit out Shy Guys at Yoshi. If Yoshi tosses three yarn balls into them, kicks three frozen enemies into them, or breathes fire with a fire watermelon into them, the Nep-Enut shrinks back into the water. After a while, it will rise again. Watermelon seeds push them back and eventually have the same effect. If ice breath from an ice watermelon is used, the Nep-Enut is frozen into a misshapen pyramid structure. They can be climbed on in this frozen state. This is the primary way to obtain a Wonder Wool in Frozen Solid and Chilled. After a while, the Nep-Enut escapes and shrinks back into the water. However, Nep-Enuts are defeated permanently if Yoshi ground-pounds them while they are frozen, shrinking all the way off the screen.
Mario Kart series[edit]
In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Tour, a mountain-sized Nep-Enut appears in the background of the Yoshi's Island course. It is based off of its sprite from Yoshi's Island, as it lacks a tongue and its eyes are placed on the side of its head.
Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]
In Yoshi's Crafted World, Nep-Enuts appear only in the level Pirate Pier. They are made of bubbled slime and have the same behavior as usual. If hit with an egg, they will briefly retreat spinning below the water.
Unused appearances[edit]
At least one Nep-Enut was originally going to appear in Paper Mario, but was removed from the game.
