Bony Beetles are undead skeletal varieties of Buzzy Beetles that first appear as enemies in Super Mario World. When stomped, a Bony Beetle falls apart before reassembling, similarly to Dry Bones.

History

Super Mario series

The Bony Beetles of Super Mario World and its remake are bipedal and wear red shoes, except for one in the credits that has blue-tinged shoes.[1] Bony Beetles, which first appear in Vanilla Fortress, have a pattern of walking around, stopping, and sticking their spikes out. A Bony Beetle's spikes damage the player character, even if he is spin-jumping. A Bony Beetle can be stopped temporarily when stomped, but a Cape Spin can defeat one entirely.[2]

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

Bony Beetles return in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. They are depicted similarly as in Super Mario World but have different sprites when. Bony Beetles are encountered in the World-e levels Swinging Bars of Doom and Bowser's Last Stand.[3][4] Jumping under a ? Block with a Buzzy Beetle does not affect it.[5]

Bony Beetles return in New Super Mario Bros. U and its port. They use their quadrupedal design introduced in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Bony Beetles are in mostly towers and castles, but they do also appear in underground and volcanic habitats. Bony Beetles behave the same as before, but the port adds sound effects for when they activate and retract their spikes. A Bony Beetle can be defeated by freezing it with an Ice Ball and then throwing the ice block it is encased within;[6] A Bony Beetle in Ludwig's Clockwork Castle be defeated temporarily if it gets crushed between a moving platform and wall while disassembled, but it becomes normal if the player character goes offscreen a distance before returning.

Super Mario-kun

A giant Bony Beetle appears in volume 4 of Super Mario-kun, based on Super Mario World. It shoots spikes to form a prison-like structure as well as lasers from its eyes. When it rams into Mario, it sends him flying into a block, releasing a Dragon Coin. When Yoshi grabs the Dragon Coin, his tongue swirls out of control and defeats the Bony Beetle.

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario

Bony Beetles appear in Bowser's Castle in Paper Mario. Those on the field attack by using a Shell Toss,[7] and they receive the First Strike if it hits Mario. A Bony Beetle uses the move in battle, dealing three units of damage to the target. If Bony Beetles have their spikes out, they jump on Mario, dealing five units of damage. A Bony Beetle can stick its spikes in and out willfully, and while its spikes are retracted, it can be flipped from a jump, with their Defense lowered to 0 in this state. A flipped Bony Beetle gets up the next turn.[8]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Bony Beetles have been redesigned as quadrupeds to resemble Buzzy Beetles more closely. As an enemy, a Bony Beetle extends its spikes if Mario tries to stomp it, in which case Mario has to use an Iron Jump sticker to attack them. A Bony Beetle attacks by taking out its spikes before headbonking Mario, rolling aside if it misses.[9]

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Bony Beetles do not appear in Paper Mario: The Origami King, though concept art at the Musée Champignon and an unused string of their name in the data shows that Bony Beetles were planned to appear as Folded Soldiers.

Mario Party series

Mario Party: Island Tour

A Bony Beetle hands out two Mini Ztars on Star-Crossed Skyway in Mario Party: Island Tour,[10] if it is at the front of the second or third Star Stages.[11][12] When a Bony Beetle gives Mini Ztars, it pulls its head into its shell and sticks out its spikes.[12]

Super Mario Party

A Bony Beetle is one of the possible guesses in the minigame Absent Minded in Super Mario Party.[13]

Super Mario Party Jamboree

In Super Mario Party Jamboree, artwork of a Bony Beetle can appear on a ball in the minigame Big-Top Quiz.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition

Bony Beetles appear in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, as uncommon enemies. They are Dark-attributed enemies and are mainly found in towers and castles.

This game also introduces their larger counterparts, Big Bony Beetles. They appear in World 5-Castle, World 6-Tower 1, World 6-Tower 2, World 6-Castle, World 7-Tower 2, World 8-Tower 1, World 8-6, World 8-Tower 2, World 8-11, and World 8-Tower 3.

As teammates, Bony Beetles have an HP rating of 4/6, an ATK rating of 3/6, and a RCV rating of 1/6. Their Beetle Shield Skill reduces the damage received by half for two turns, and their Awoken Skill, Dark Boost, raises the ATK of the player's Dark team members if a horizontal line of Dark orbs is cleared.

Dr. Mario World

Bony Beetles are assistants in Dr. Mario World. In stage mode, their effect is to increase the score that resulted from a capsule match if that match eliminated four or more viruses simultaneously, where the percentage of the score increase is greater at higher levels, where it is 15% at the first level and 75% at the maximum level. In versus mode, their effect is to eliminate the lowest row of objects when the player's play area shrinks to only three rows left, meaning that the area would need to have nine rows of Empty Blocks for this effect to activate, where it is only 20% at the first level and 100% at the maximum level. The Bony Beetle assistant can be obtained as a reward for clearing the first area in World 13.

Mario Golf: Super Rush

A Bony Beetle who can talk appears at Balmy Dunes within the Golf Adventure mode of Mario Golf: Super Rush.[14]

The skeletal ghost of the Buzzy Beetle?

The hard-shelled Buzzy Beetle has become bony. If you step on it, it crumbles, but it will come back after a while. It will also stop and produce spikes, so you should step on them while you are walking carefully.
