Porcupuffers (alternatively Porcu-Puffers) are enemies introduced in Super Mario World. They resemble gigantic indigo Cheep Cheeps, with magenta lips and indigo, cyan, and yellow spikes all over their back. Their faces are nearly identical to those of Boss Basses and Cheep Chomps. Their name is a portmanteau of "porcupine" and "pufferfish;" this combined with the Japanese name also suggests an intentional reference to Porcupo.

Other fish enemies have erroneously been referred as Porcupuffers in official English material. Cheep Chomp is incorrectly referred to as one in the New Super Mario Bros. Wii Prima guide,[1] despite the correct name being used when describing Cheep Cheeps,[2] while the lone Spiny Cheep Cheep of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is mislabeled as a Porcupuffer in that game's Prima guide.[3]

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

Porcu-Puffers are enemies in Super Mario World. They appear in three levels: Vanilla Secret 3, a secret area in the Cookie Mountain level, and a hidden area within Chocolate Island 1. Porcu-Puffers swim at the water surface, going in the direction of the player character.[4] Jumping on a Porcu-Puffer inflicts damage, but not if done with Yoshi.[5] Porcu-Puffers are vulnerable to fireballs and Cape swipes.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Porcupuffers return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They are obstacles for World 4 and appear in two levels proper, World 6-5 and later in World 9-2. Porcupuffers swim near the surface to pursue the player characters and leap from the water to attack. They can defeated from either a fireball,[6] Star, or Koopa Shell.[7] A defeated Porcupuffer respawns a while later.[8] A Porcupuffer can be frozen by an Ice Ball, though it breaks free almost immediately after.[9]

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

The Porcupuffers in Super Mario 3D Land are depicted similarly as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and behave like in said game, even with a three-dimensional perspective being added. The Porcupuffers in World 6-1 behave differently because they jump out of the water and destroy fragile bridge segments upon crashing into them.[10][11]

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Porcupuffers are enemies in New Super Mario Bros. 2. They are encountered in World Flower-2 and World Star-4, as well as stage one of the Impossible Pack. Porcupuffers function like they do in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, though they do swim in poison in their first level appearance.[12]

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Porcupuffers return in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and their port, once again working like they did before. Porcupuffers appear only in Porcupuffer Falls in New Super Mario Bros. U and Porcupuffer Cavern in New Super Luigi U. Their artworkMedia:NSMBU Porcupuffer Artwork.png depicts them having slightly transparent fins.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

The Porcupuffers in Super Mario 3D World and its port are based on their appearance in Super Mario 3D Land. They appear only in Pipeline Lagoon.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Porcupuffers are placeable exclusively within the Super Mario 3D World style of Super Mario Maker 2, despite appearing in Super Mario World. Porcupuffers act differently than before, now pursuing the player character actively to try and eat them.[13] If they have wings, Porcupuffer hover slightly at the peak of their jump. A Porcupuffer can be defeated only by hitting it with four fireballs, causing it to explode;[14] after the first fireball, it darkens and puffs up slightly,[14] and each following fireball makes Porcupuffer more red and swollen.[14] Unlike previous appearances, defeating a Porcupuffer does not replace it with another. It is possible to place a Porcupuffer in lava, but this makes them catch fire and therefore become unaffected by fireballs.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[edit]

Porcupuffers are obstacles encountered during the second stretch of the Dream Rafting event of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.[15] Porcupuffers can be defeated when all player characters Ground Pound the raft at the same time.[16] Porcupuffers are amongst the species in the Highway Tally minigame of London Party.[17]

Mario Kart Arcade GP DX[edit]

Porcupuffers are placeable items in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX. A Porcupuffer pops the tires of any racer on contact. There is a variation item named Triple Porcupuffers, which comes with three Porcupuffers.

Minecraft[edit]

In Minecraft, the Super Mario Mash-up replaces the skins of the Elder Guardians to skins of Porcupuffers, as well as replacing Pufferfish.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]

Four Porcupuffers appear in the form of fountain statues in Gallery mode of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

Super Mario Party[edit]

A Porcupuffer can appear along with a Blooper and a Cheep Cheep in the minigame Rattle and Hmmm in Super Mario Party.[18] There is also a Porcupuffer in the background of the Mushroom Beach in Challenge Road.[19]

Dr. Mario World[edit]

Porcupuffers are assistants in Dr. Mario World. In stage mode, their effect can only be activated in timed stages, as it increases the timer by 3 seconds, where the chance of it happening is 50% at the first level and 100% at the maximum level (10% and 50% respectively prior to version 2.3.0). In versus mode, their effect has a chance to change the color of the viruses to be of the same color after the opponent attack each time, which excludes attacks caused by clearing all viruses on their side.
