The Boomerang Flower is a power-up that first appears in Super Mario 3D Land. It is a flower resembling a white boomerang with a single blue stripe, and transforms Mario into Boomerang Mario.
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario 3D Land
Boomerang Flowers first appear in Super Mario 3D Land. They can be found lying on the ground, inside of ? Blocks, and after defeating some Boomerang Bros. After obtaining it, Mario can throw a boomerang to defeat enemies and reach items from a far distance. However, Mario can only throw one boomerang at a time and must wait for his first boomerang to return or disappear before he can throw another. This power-up first appears in World 5-1. It is possible to get an Extra Life by just throwing a Boomerang at a Checkpoint Flag and repeatedly jumping over it until it hits the flag five times in a row.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
The Boomerang Flower reappears in Super Mario 3D World and is present in both modes of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. The characters (bar Mario) and their boomerangs are now color-coded.
Super Mario Maker 2
Boomerang Flowers were added to Super Mario Maker 2 in the version 3.0.0 update released on April 22, 2020, appearing in the Super Mario 3D World style. They function nearly identically to previous appearances. When collecting the power-up, the sound that plays when transforming is the same as the Super Bell.
Mario Golf: World Tour
The Boomerang Flower appears in Mario Golf: World Tour as an item that the player may collect during matches. It drastically increases the fade or draw of a character. A golf ball and set of golf clubs designed based on this item are also available for Miis to use.
Mario Kart series
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
The Boomerang Flower first appears in the Mario Kart series as an item in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It allows the player to throw a boomerang forwards or backwards up to three times, hitting any karts in the way before returning to the player. It will also hit the opponent on the way back if the player misses the first time. When the player throws the boomerang, their item slot will become empty until it returns, allowing a different item to be collected during that time. If the boomerang returns while the player has no free item slots, it will vanish. The height of the vehicle affects the height of the boomerang's throw, which may result in low-down vehicles being too low to be hit by the boomerang thrown by a character in a tall vehicle.
In addition, a Boomerang Flower represents the Boomerang Cup in the Booster Course Pass of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Nintendo of America's official social media accounts jokingly referred to Template:Classic-link as the Boomerang Flower's native habitat,[1][2] owing to the fact that boomerangs are strongly associated with Australia, where the city of Sydney is located.
Mario Kart Tour
The Boomerang Flower reappears in Mario Kart Tour as the special item of Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Larry, Toad (Pit Crew), Boomerang Bro, Yoshi (Kangaroo), Luigi (Vacation), Mario (Samurai), Rosalina (Volendam), Luigi (Knight), Toad (Astronaut), Pauline (Cowgirl), Shy Guy (Ninja), Petey Piranha, Donkey Kong (Gladiator), and the Bronze, Petey Piranha and Larry Mii Racing Suits. Its function has also changed significantly; instead of the player throwing the boomerang, the boomerang instead orbits the player's kart twice before flying away. The boomerang is also capable of collecting nearby coins and event tokens automatically, as well as destroying hazardous items. Also unlike in Mario Kart 8, the boomerang can only be thrown once. When Boomerang Flower+ is active, an extra boomerang is added, allowing the player to use two boomerangs instead of one. The Super Leaf functions similarly to the Boomerang Flower.
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit
Boomerang Flowers reappear as items in Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
While Boomerang Flowers do not physically appear in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, one is used as the logo for the Boomerang Rank.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey
A Boomerang Flower also makes a cameo in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, where the Boomerang Rank from Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam reappears, replacing the Shine Rank from the original game.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership
A Boomerang Flower once again makes a cameo appearance in Mario & Luigi: Brothership as the logo for the Boomerang Rank.
Minecraft
In the Super Mario Mash-up in Minecraft, Oxeye Daisies are replaced by Boomerang Flowers.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a Boomerang Flower can be seen in the antiques shop in Toad Town.
