The Shadow Queen is the final boss of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. An ancient 1,000-year demon from the dark beyond, the Shadow Queen came to the Mushroom World with designs on enslaving it and becoming its tyrannical ruler. To this end, she destroyed an ancient civilization and began a conquest on the entire world with the aid of numerous monsters and the Crystal Stars, incredible treasures of amazing power said to be capable of holding the essence of the heavens themselves. In the end, her plans are ruined, and she is sealed away by four heroes within The Thousand-Year Door, though her demonic spirit would continue to live on and influence others into planning her resurrection. The basis of the game revolves around numerous villains working together to revive her. Each of them has his or her own agenda for doing so, though, but the Shadow Queen represents the source of all conflict for the entire game.
The Shadow Queen is the overarching antagonist and final boss of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. One thousand years before the game's events, she arrived, hoping to conquer the land; she was defeated and sealed away in the Palace of Shadow, where she remained for the last millennium, with the game's main plot centering around the plot by the X-Nauts to revive her.

According to legends, one thousand years ago, the Shadow Queen simply appeared one day and waged war against the city where Rogueport now stands. She destroyed the city and sank it beneath the earth. She took a quarter of the city, the palace, as her den, the Palace of Shadow, and then made plans to conquer the rest of the world with her minions, including the Three Shadows and her pet dragons Hooktail, Gloomtail, and Bonetail.

The Shadow Queen then created the Crystal Stars, which hold the essence of the heavens and planned to use them to remold the world in her desired image. The Queen hid the stars in fortresses and castles across the lands and created the Pit of 100 Trials and the monsters within it to imprison all who would oppose her.

While the Queen is near the peak of her power, four heroes—a Toad, a Goomba, a Koopa Troopa and a Boo—emerge to stop her by stealing the Crystal Stars and using their power against her. They gathered the stars, invaded her Palace, and attacked the Queen, destroying her body, only for her spirit to survive and subsequently become sealed in the foundations of the palace; upon death, however, the queen curses the warriors, forcing them to take precautionary measures.

After a thousand years, Beldam enacts a plan to revive her through manipulation of the X-Nauts, who kidnap Princess Peach, setting off the events of the game. Mario and his friends collect all seven Crystal Stars, defeat most of the X-Nauts, and pursue Grodus to the Palace of Shadow in order to stop the plot once and for all. Unfortunately, Grodus is able to summon the Shadow Queen and presents Peach as a vessel for her to possess. Now reborn, the Shadow Queen prepares to enact her vengeance, and soon nearly destroys Grodus for thinking he could control her.

|tattle=Battle 1: Omigosh, what happened? I can't believe Peach just got possessed! That's AWFUL! Now she's...the Shadow Queen. The demon that destroyed this town 1,000 years ago. She'll unleash big lightning attacks. She'll also use magic to raise Attack and Defense, or to absorb HP... She might even try to drag us into darkness... I don't feel good about attacking Peach, but we have to do SOMETHING! Don't think of it as Peach! We just have to fight to the end! C'MON!!!<br>Battle 2: That's the Shadow Queen!  Wow, she's scary... but we gotta hold our ground! She'll use lightning magic and boost her own Attack and Defense power. And, if she uses her breath on us, we could be poisoned, confused, or lose power-ups! But... the worst is when she saves energy for a big attack!  That... is... GNARLY! We'd do best to just avoid it by hiding in the shadows with Vivian, I think. Boy, and not only is her body scary, but her hands are pretty mean, as well. She has several attack patterns, so watch closely to see what's coming! Now, Mario!  Let's do it!  This is it, our final battle!  Let's give it all we've got!
The Shadow Queen then notices Mario and his friends and offers them the position of being her servant. If Mario agrees, the Shadow Queen will engulf the world with her foul magic, resulting in a Game Over for Mario, for Peach, and for the world. When Mario refuses, the Shadow Queen attacks him and his friends, intending to put them in their place, but finds that Princess Peach's body is impeding her power. The Shadow Queen assumes her real form, and for a time becomes impervious to Mario and his friends' attacks. After several further unsuccessful attempts to attack the Shadow Queen, the battle abruptly stops just as Mario and his friends are about to give up hope.

However, the Crystal Stars manage to travel to their home locations, allowing the people of each area to communicate with Mario. The goodwill and wishes of people the world over are enough to suppress the Shadow Queen's possession of Princess Peach; she regains control of her body long enough to give Mario all her remaining power. Restored, Mario and his partners resume their battle against the Shadow Queen; they are able to defeat and seal her forever, and Peach regains control of her own body once again.

In the remake, her manner of defeat is different compared to the original game, as she slowly disintegrates instead of explodes.
Legend has it that the Shadow Queen simply appeared one day and waged war against the city where Rogueport now stands. She destroyed the city and all who opposed her. The city eventually succumbed to the Queen's rule. She transformed a quarter of the city into the Palace of Shadows, which was her personal base.

With the city under her control, the Queen planned to conquer the rest of the world. She created an army of demonic beasts, the three Shadow Sirens, and the three dragons, Hooktail, Gloomtail, and Bonetail. She used her forces to wreak havoc on any settlement she could.

The Queen then created the Crystal Stars, which held the essence of the heavens. The Queen planned to use the stars to remake the planet in her image. She hid the stars in fortresses and castles across the land. She also created the Pit of 100 Trials to torture those who opposed her.
The Shadow Queen also appears in the Super Mario-kun manga adaptation of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Doors plot. As with most characters in the manga, she displays more of a comic side.

When the Queen was nearing the peak of her power, four warriors emerged to stop her. They were a Toad, a Goomba, a Koopa, and a Boo. The four planned to steal the Crystal Stars and use their power against the Queen. They gathered the stars and mounted an attack on the Shadow Palace. They fought through the Queen's entire army, until finally they reached the Queen. The warriors destroyed the Queen's body and sealed her spirit in the foundations of the palace.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The Shadow Queen, in her possessed Princess Peach form, appears as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Her connection to the Three Shadows is given an indirect reference in her unlock requirements, which requires Vivian's spirit to be summoned alongside a Gengar spirit core.
br

The Queen had cursed the warriors before her death, causing them to prepare for the day when she would return. They sealed the palace entrance using the Crystal Stars, and hid the stars where only a pure-hearted hero would be able to obtain them.

The Queen left behind her Shadow Sirens, who began preparations for her revival. They spread a rumor that a great treasure was sealed in the Shadow Palace so that as many people as possible would try to break the seal.
The Shadow Queen is an immortal demon, having survived for a full thousand years while being sealed in the Palace of Shadow. She can also possess other people, and has a variety of magic at her disposal, which she uses to create powerful creatures and objects such as the three dragons and the Crystal Stars. However, her vessel may be able to suppress or co-opt her influence temporarily if they possess particularly strong willpower.; near the second half of the final battle, Princess Peach manages to regain control long enough to fully heal Mario and his party.

In battle, while in her true form she is immune to normal and defense-piercing attacks, and can only be made vulnerable with the power of the Crystal Stars. She is able to use her hands to drain the health of her enemies and pierce their defenses; they are also capable of smashing opponents to the ground, and are considered separate enemies that can be targeted individually. When the hands defeated, the Shadow Queen can revive them the following turn. The Shadow Queen is also able to strike her opponents with lightning that pierces her target's defenses. When low on health, the queen will often resort to attacks that induce poison, confusion, or allergies that prevent status changes.

After one thousand years pass, the Shadow Sirens begin to prepare for their mistress' awakening. They join the Secret Society of the X-Nauts and Beldam, the oldest of the Shadow Sirens, convinces their leader, Sir Grodus, that he will be able to control the Shadow Queen once he frees her.

Beldam finds the chest with the map that reveals the locations of the Crystal Stars. She tells Grodus that one of pure heart is needed both to open the chest and find a suitable host for the Queen. Beldam disguises herself as a merchant and sets up shop in Rogueport. She discovers that Princess Peach is an ideal host, but cannot capture Peach. Grodus sends his X-Nauts to abduct Peach while she is in a back alley.
One of the Shadow Queen's stronger attacks is the use of several shadowy hands that come up from the ground and drag Mario or one of his partners down into the shadows and damage them with several attacks or stampede them for heavy defense-piercing damage. The queen will also attack the audience members with these hands to drain their energy to restore herself to full health and power. Her strongest attack is a series of dark energy waves that hit Mario and his partner for heavy damage, but this attack takes a turn to charge up, allowing Mario to avoid it with Vivian's Veil ability. Additionally, the Shadow Queen also has the ability to temporarily raise her attack and defense by 3.

After Mario gathers all the Crystal Stars, he releases the seal on the queen's palace and chases Grodus through it. Grodus holds Peach hostage, but Bowser intervenes. Mario defeats Bowser and corners Grodus. Grodus says that the queen needs Peach's body so that she can be fully revived. Grodus summons the Queen and presents Peach as a host. Grodus thinks that he can control the Queen, but she destroys him. The Queen offers Mario the choice of becoming her servant, but he refuses. The Queen attacks Mario with extremely powerful attacks. Eventually, she becomes invincible, and all Mario can do is wait for the Crystal Stars to appear.
Personality
The Shadow Queen is a demon who cares only for herself and her aspirations, particularly conquering the world and remaking it in her image; she seems to rule her followers through fear rather than loyalty, as she often uses her powers to intimidate them. The Shadow Queen is motivated by power and pride above all else, and is not afraid to assert her authority over anyone she sees as weak or insubordinate; despite Sir Grodus playing a major role in her unsealing, she blasts his head off for daring to suggest that she obey him. She then takes on Mario and his party, believing them to be too weak to handle her.
The Crystal Stars appear and travel to their home locations, allowing the people of each area to communicate with Mario. They distract the Queen with their good wishes, allowing Peach to take control long enough to give Mario all her power. Mario is now able to damage the Queen, and he battles with her for a long time. Eventually, he defeats the Queen, killing her for good. Peach is released unharmed, and all the Queen's followers are no longer a threat. The Shadow Queen is gone forever, leaving Mario and his friends to celebrate.

Super Mario-Kun
Some of the Shadow Queen's speech and behavior vary somewhat between the Japanese and English versions of the game. In the Japanese version, she speaks in a considerably more down-to-earth manner. For example, when she sees Mario and his party members, she describes them as looking "agreeable", and claims she will "let bygones be bygones" when offering them a second chance to serve her. In the English version, she speaks more formally, and is more condescending, backhandedly describing Mario and his party members as looking weak but possibly useful.

The Shadow Queen also appears in the Super Mario-Kun manga adaptation of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Doors plot.

Personality
Physical description
Like many Mario villains within the series, the Shadow Queen is shown to be a cold and calculating villain who cares for nothing but power and control. She is a highly sadistic, power hungry, and ruthless demon whose actions have led to the destruction of entire lands and the deaths of millions. She is shown to be one of the more evil villains within the series as she has been known to be a complete monster, devoid of any type of kindness or goodness, nearly destroying Grodus without a second thought even after he revived her. Unlike some of the other villains, the Shadow Queen possesses no comical undertones whatsoever and only has a sadistic sense of humor. While it is unknown if she instructed Beldam to revive her, the Shadow Queen in essence is responsible for all the events in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Many of the monsters Mario fought were part of her army, and her most loyal followers were the ones manipulating the course of events to revive her.
While possessing Peach, the princess's skin turns paler with dark makeup, and her dress becomes black with white detailing. She wears a similarly-colored cloak with a high collar; the collar causes her hair to appear significantly shorter as well. Peach's crown and jewelry turn red and take a similar shape to those of the Shadow Queen; her face also takes on a crueler expression.

In addition to being a demon from the dark depths, the Shadow Queen is highly sadistic as all her strongholds and fortresses are overflowing with thousands of mutilated corpses. The corpses were so mutilated that only the skeletons of their former beings were left, their only purpose left was to serve the very being that murdered them. In addition to this, the demon was also in control of the Pit of 100 trials, which eerily resembled a torture chamber. This all contributed to her sadistic personality and thirst for violence. Her evil and power seemed to possess no limits as she created demonic armies, three fierce and immortal dragons, and even the Crystal Stars themselves. The Crystal Stars seem to have unlimited power and taking into account that they represent only portions of the queen's power, her powers seem nearly god like. After years of her reign of terror, her reputation became so horrible and well known, that people shuddered at the mere mention of her or any of her followers and monsters.
In her true form, the Shadow Queen appears as a shadowy purple demon, with a "starry" body that takes on an elongated form during cutscenes and a spiral-shape during the final battle. Her hair underneath her massive crown is a grayed purple (deep indigo in the remake), and her "face" only has small pale lips visible, similar to the Shadow Sirens; in Super Mario-kun, she possesses a large mouth with jagged teeth as well as big, scowling blank eyes. The Shadow Queen has large hands that only appear connected during cutscenes and are shown as disembodied during the battle.

She seems to be so evil, that her very presence brings a horrible aura as well as darkness in the skies. Her palace and even the Thousand-Year Door itself all have a horrible feeling and even the thugs of Rogueport stay away from the door due to the feeling it evokes. Unsurprisingly, the queen was able to instill massive fear in not just the world itself, but her followers as well. While the demon's followers are shown to be loyal, this seems to be as a result of fear rather than respect. Even after her first defeat, her minions, the Shadow Sirens, attempted to revive her by using other villains. It is later shown that they turn good after her destruction, hinting that they were never truly evil, but were afraid of the queen's wrath should she return without their assistance. Other than the stories told within the game, not much more is known about the demon and it seems that she has done nothing else within her existence other than creating destruction, chaos, and mass murder. As of now, it has been stated that she has been defeated by Mario and sent to the netherworld for all eternity.

{{spirit
The Shadow Queen, being an ancient demon, is in control of numerous powers. At her full power, she is completely invincible (even attacks that pierce defense don't work on her), and can only be made vulnerable with the power of the Crystal Stars. In her spiritual form, she is able to use her hands to drain the life force of her enemies. This damages her opponents while at the same time giving her energy and also pierces their defense. In addition to this attack, her arms are also capable of smashing opponents to the ground. Her hands are considered separate enemies. However, whenever they're defeated, the Shadow Queen revives them a turn later. The Shadow Queen is also able to strike her opponents with lightning, an attack that is difficult to avoid due to how fast it is implemented and pierces Mario and his companion's defenses. When in a dire situation, the queen will often resort to poison, confusion, or allergic toxins. One makes her opponent lose health every turn, another makes her opponent so incapacitated that he or she will often attack their own allies or miss an attack all together, and the last one makes her opponent resistant to status changes, thus making Mario and his partners unable to use Power Lift or a Boo's Sheet.

One of the most harmful attacks of the queen is when she summons upon dozens of demonic hands to come up from the ground and drag her victims down to be issued a large beating. A even stronger attack with her dead hands is when she uses them to stampede Mario or his partners, which if not protected against can deal 12 damage. Her dead hands can pierce defense. The demonic queen used this early in the battle with Mario to murder the audience members and drain their life force to give her full health and power. Another very harmful attack is when the queen uses one full turn to build up energy and then release demonic energies at her enemies. This attack alone can take off a large portion of Mario's health. Her strongest attack consists of sending out black waves of darkness, which hits Mario and his party member, but this attack takes a turn to charge up before she can use it, allowing Mario avoid it with Vivian's Veil ability. The Shadow Queen also has the ability to temporarily raise her attack and defense by noticeable amounts, and when the queen has her attack and defense raised, she is able to do the Megawave, a special and powerful attack reminiscent of Mario's own Supernova created when the queen charges and boosts her attack and defense power by 3, dealing 17 damage, and, if the player is using the P-Up, D-Down badge, the damage can be devasting, dealing up to 20 (if the player uses 3 P-Up, D-Down badges). While not considered to be a battle power, the queen also holds the ability to possess other beings for her own uses. The Queen seems to be immortal. She holds the abilities of creating unlimited amounts of demonic monsters and other spirits to do her bidding.

*Some of the Shadow Queen's speech and behavior varies somewhat between the Japanese and English versions of the game. In the Japanese version, she speaks in a far more down-to-earth manner. For example, when she sees Mario and his party members, she describes them as looking "agreeable," and when she offers them a second chance to serve her, she says if they agree she will "Let by-gones be by-gones." In the English version, she speaks more formally, and is more condescending, describing, backhandedly, Mario and his party members as looking weak, but possibly useful, and when she sees Beldam she says "what ages have past."
*Her text box graphic is the same as Bonetail's, as well as Mimi's true form in Super Paper Mario.
*The Shadow Queen recognizes Beldam and Marilyn, but not their sister, Vivian. Combined with her naivety about their true scheme, it would seem that Vivian wasn't alive during the Shadow Queen's initial reign, and that Beldam never told her about her true intentions.
*Despite being the final boss and the game being able to be resumed from after she is defeated, the Shadow Queen only awards one Star Point upon defeat (except in the game's remake, where none are awarded at all). This is also true for Bonetail.
*The Shadow Queen (first phase, both before and after transformation) is one of four chapter bosses that the Yoshi Kid can swallow. The others are Macho Grubba, Doopliss, and Sir Grodus.
*If the player Superguards her hand's HP-draining attack and prevents the damage, the sound effect for HP recovery still plays. In the remake, the sound effect does not play although a heart with a zero in it appears above the Shadow Queen.
*The Shadow Queen is one of the only female final bosses in the Mario series, alongside Cackletta and Elder Princess Shroob.
*In the Japanese version of the game, it is not possible to Superguard any of her attacks.

Shadow Queen, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

The Shadow Queen is the overarching antagonist and final boss of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. One thousand years before the game's events, she arrived, hoping to conquer the land; she was defeated and sealed away in the Palace of Shadow, where she remained for the last millennium, with the game's main plot centering around the plot by the X-Nauts to revive her.

History[edit]

Background[edit]

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

Super Mario-kun[edit]

The Shadow Queen also appears in the Super Mario-kun manga adaptation of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door's plot. As with most characters in the manga, she displays more of a comic side.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

General information[edit]

Powers and abilities[edit]

The Shadow Queen about to attack Mario and Goombella.

Personality[edit]

Shadow Queen speaking to Sir Grodus in the Palace of Shadow
Shadow Queen refusing to be controlled by Sir Grodus.

Physical description[edit]

While possessing Peach, the princess's skin turns paler with dark makeup, and her dress becomes black with white detailing. She wears a similarly-colored cloak with a high collar; the collar causes her hair to appear significantly shorter as well. Peach's crown and jewelry turn red and take a similar shape to those of the Shadow Queen; her face also takes on a crueler expression.

Tattle That's the Shadow Queen! Wow, she's scary... but we gotta hold our ground! Max HP is 150, Attack is 7, and Defense is 1. She'll use lightning magic and boost her own Attack and Defense power. And, if she uses her breath on us, we could be poisoned, confused, or lose power-ups! But...the worst is when she saves energy for a big attack! That... is...

Trivia[edit]

 • Her text box graphic is the same as Bonetail's, as well as Mimi's true form in Super Paper Mario.
 • Despite being the final boss and the game being able to be resumed from after she is defeated, the Shadow Queen only awards one Star Point upon defeat (except in the game's remake, where none are awarded at all). This is also true for Bonetail.
 • If the player Superguards her hand's HP-draining attack and prevents the damage, the sound effect for HP recovery still plays. In the remake, the sound effect does not play although a heart with a zero in it appears above the Shadow Queen.
 • In the Japanese version of the game, it is not possible to Superguard any of her attacks.
