Lord Crump, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

The X-Naut platoon is a recurring group of enemy soldiers in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its Nintendo Switch remake, and a subset of the X-Naut organization. They are summoned by Lord Crump at several points in the game but are only directly battled once. There appears to be an arbitrarily large amount of X-Nauts making up the platoon, as the exact number varies greatly.

The X-Naut platoon first appears in the Prologue. When Mario defeats Crump the first time at the Rogueport dock, he summons the X-Nauts (which included a regular X-Naut named Johnson) to attack Mario, but they accidentally attack Crump instead while Mario and Goombella escape.

Later, on Keelhaul Key, Crump brings the army of X-Nauts with him on a battleship to attack Mario and take the Sapphire Star back from him. They fight against the Toads and Cortez's Embers, and eventually Crump calls them in to assist him in the fight against Mario. Throughout the fight, Crump has them deployed in different formations, depending on how much damage he has been dealt. Defeating them is optional, as Crump can summon replacements, while the next formation will replace them after Crump's health drops enough regardless of if they have been defeated or not. Superguarding does not damage them, and the Super Hammer does not spin them into Crump.

  • In their first formation, six X-Nauts pile in front of Crump, having 6 HP. Sometimes, they spawn with a Super Shroom or Stop Watch. They all attack Mario by leaping into him at once.
  • In their second formation, a huge line hangs from a girder on the ceiling, again having 6 HP but making them difficult to attack. They attack by shaking the girder, making giant forks fall onto random places on the battlefield below to hit the combatants (which sometimes includes Crump). Alternatively, they can all file off to pile onto Mario or his partner, doing 1 damage five times. This phase can be skipped by depleting Crump's health all the way early.
  • In their third formation, which only happens when Crump's HP fully drops and is then healed, a huge crowd of X-Nauts surround Crump, now having 10 HP. They combine together to form a massive ball with Crump balancing on top, running through Mario and his partner to cause damage to both (while Crump still has his separate attack turn).

Once Crump is defeated, the X-Naut platoon flees again.

Shortly afterward, when Crump encounters Bowser and Kammy Koopa in Twilight Town, Crump summons the army of X-Nauts again. Bowser and Kammy retaliate by summoning various members of the Koopa Clan (Hammer Bros., Koopatrols, and Magikoopas). Crump throws the recovered Superbombomb at them, but since it is broken, it fails to explode. Bowser then ignites it with his fiery breath, destroying both armies. X-Nauts are only seen in small amounts later in the game (aside from as members of the audience), including in the X-Naut Fortress, so the incident in Twilight Town seems to have incapacitated most of them.

Tattle That's an X-Naut platoon. Crump commands them all. Where'd they come from? Their Max HP depends on their condition, but Attack is 5 and Defense is 0. They're gonna come at us with coordinated group maneuvers, I'm sure. ...But they're pretty wimpy, so we should be able to handle it, don'tcha think?
